Dwight Yorke might have once been known as the playboy prince of the Premiership but he has been brought to Sunderland to become an important part of the new management team.
Well, that’s what Roy Keane said and I’m not going to argue with him so welcome Yorkie and I hope you have every success in your role as Black Cats social manager!
Interestingly, while Keane and Yorke appear to be completely opposite characters the mutual affection between them is clear. In fact, for all of the ferocity of Keane’s competitive spirit and his intense dedication to the game he was actually a drinking buddy of Yorke’s at Old Trafford before the Irishman gave up the Guinness and became even more intense!
And, for all of Yorke’s apparently laidback attitude and love for life, he is clearly a huge admirer of his new manager and admitted he could never have turned him down when he asked him to leave the BBQs and beaches of Sydney for a new life on the rather less welcoming beaches and weather of Wearside.
Which made me think, if Keane can persuade someone like Yorke to sacrifice the celebrity good life Down Under is he now officially the most persuasive man in football?
In fact, surely the North-East tourist board should get him on board. I know he hasn’t got much spare time, but even a short advert would do.
Next thing you know, they’ll be more than just stag and hen parties coming to the region. There will be loads of tanned and ever-so-slightly annoying Australians coming over, roaming the Durham and Northumberland coast and countryside looking for crocodiles to wrestle - although presumably not stingrays - while sales of Fosters and disposable BBQs will go through the roof.
And it will also be fantastic news for Gateshead Thunder. With so many Aussies coming to visit there might actually be someone in the North-East who is interested in going to watch Rugby League. They might even be able to pick up a few new players!
Anyway, welcome to the North-East Dwight. You’ve already got into the swing of things by declaring that Sunderland are a bigger club than Newcastle. Ideal way to become popular with your new fans before you’ve even kicked a ball!
