You Should Have Gone to Sumo

Posted by Luke on October 4, 2006 3:09 PM |

I am a little worried about the Newcastle Falcons and it has nothing to do with the fact they have won just one game this season and are playing a far superior looking team in the Llanelli Scarlets on Friday night, although admittedly that is quite a frightening prospect.

I just think someone should tell them that, just because their pack has been bullied a bit this season, they can’t go around hitting people when things don’t go their own way.

But where have they been this week? To Glenn McCory’s boxing gym in Northumberland for boxing lessons from two Cuban coaches who are doing a research trip - a little early don’t you think - for the 2012 Olympics.

Quite what a skipping rope, gloves and shadow boxing are going to bring to the party when an egg-shaped ball is squirming around in front of you and an 18 stone prop is jumping on your head is a mystery to me.

Because, the last time I looked, swinging an uppercut at your opponent is illegal on a rugby pitch and generally leads to a spell in the sin bin and a suspension.

Personally, I reckon a training camp with some Sumo wrestlers would have been far better. You see, it’s a little known fact that the best sumo wrestlers are not necessarily the biggest and the strongest.

There are all sorts of techniques involved and the littler guy can often out-manoeuvre the tubbier one in the baby’s nappy and get the better of their face-off through clever grips and tricks.

Just a thought. Although I must add that the last thing I want to imply is that the Falcons squad should wear baby’s nappies. I do have to visit Kingston Park and I have no desire to be used for tackling practice.

I enjoyed your bit on racism today it brought back some horrible memories of that dreadful period in the eighties. I took my Mum to a match (very un-cool I know, but she insisted), we stood on the Large swathe of the Gallowgate terrace behind the goal in front of one of the concrete 'tank trap' crush barriers, a group of skinheads behind us started swearing and abusing a player, My Mum turned around and told them off. The ground did not open up to swallow me, and suitably chastised the skinheads just shut up, I don’t know who was the more surprised.

Also read the piece on racism, nice to see you can sometimes do something worthwhile in the paper!

Seriously, a very good piece, looking forward to part two tomorrow.

As for the Newcastle Falcons, it probably has something to do with hand to eye co-ordination, but don't quote me on that
