The Future's Bright?

Posted by Luke on November 27, 2006 5:04 PM |

At times, supporting Newcastle United can seem like you are suffering from permanent Seasonal Adjustment Disorder - or SAD for short..

You know what I mean, all dark clouds of depression, dreary forecasts and the shivers of foreboding. Well, I think it’s only fair to suggest that, after an awful start to the season, there are some welcome rays of sunshine to brighten things up and provide a little warm feeling as we had into the Festive season.

I’ve certainly had my misgivings about this campaign, as regular readers of this blog will know. The small size of the squad, the major blunders in the summer in terms of transfers and the nagging suspicion that a few injuries would send Newcastle sliding towards relegation.

In fact, my bout of SAD started before the leaves on the trees starting turning brown and long before anyone had to clear any ice off their windscreens.

To slip off on a slight tangent, has anyone had any ice on their cars in the morning yet? No, I haven’t either. It’s global warming you know, we’re killing the planet with our SUVs - Premiership footballers please take note - fossil fuels, car emissions etc etc. The polar ice caps are going to melt and we’ll all die.

Right, back on to more positive matters. As I mentioned in yesterday’s entry, the 1-0 win over Portsmouth was long overdue, but it was, overall, a highly impressive performance from Glenn Roeder’s side.

The defence, with Nolberto Solano making light of his lack of pace at right back, Steven Taylor and Titus Bramble superb in the centre and Peter Ramage proving that homegrown players always have a better understanding of what it means to wear the shirt, it is an understated statistic this season, but United actually have one of the Premiership’s best defensive records so far this season.

In their last 11 games, the Newcastle defence has conceded just six goals. We are all guilty of taking a pop at Magpie defenders, it’s a bit like making jokes about Heather McCartney - soon to be plain old Mills - all too easy, but credit where credit is due.

Newcastle’s midfield has always been competitive and the return of Kieron Dyer has added some vital pace and creative spark. As long as he stays fit.....

I’d also like to make a special mention to two players who looked as though they had played their last games for the club when they returned to pre-season training with their expensively-attained suntans - Nicky Butt and James Milner.

The treatment of Milner on transfer deadline day, when he was told he could leave for Aston Villa, travelled down, agreed personal terms and than had the move cancelled because Mark - I don’t like playing in the winter when it’s cold - (honestly, look at his appearance record since he came to England) Viduka decided to stay with the Smoggies, was shoddy to say the least.

But not once has he sulked, far from it, he has actually stepped up a level. He is a dedicated professional, desperate to learn and, at 20-years-old, he can only get better. I just hope Roeder isn’t planning to sell him in January to raise funds to strengthen elsewhere in the squad because I’m pretty certain Villa will make another bid when the transfer window opens.

As for Butt, he was a disgrace in his first season at St James’s Park. A big-time Charlie struggling to motivate himself now that he wasn’t challenging for silverware.

He wasn’t much better on loan at Birmingham City apparently, but he has been a minor miracle this season whenever he has been called upon. After two years of unprecedented criticism, it looks like Butt has got his hunger back.

As for Antoine Sibierski, the former member of Right Said Fred has been a revelation. I’m sure that expression has religious connotations, but I don’t think anyone thought the Manchester City no mark had a pray of succeeding at Newcastle.

Joint top goalscorer, European dangerman and all on a free transfer. Alright, so he’s limited and, long term he isn’t the answer, but Super Sib has been, well, super so far.

Goals, though, are still the major problem - just nine in 14 Premiership games so far - but as long as Roeder can keep this momentum - unbeaten in four since the Sheffield United defeat - Newcastle can get to January, strengthen where needed and, well, the future’s bright! You hope...

Agree with the point about Milner. He is clearly the present and the future on the right for us. Solano has just had his best two games of the season at right back. He has looked off the pace when played in midfield and is probably past it. If we sold Milner in January for £4-6m we could probably get through the season but we would then need to spend around £8m just to get someone of equal quality to replace him in the summer. It would be a stupid short-term decision. And how do you justify selling one of our best performers?
With Milner, N'zogbia, Dyer, and Martins we actually look dangerous for the first time this season. If we can ever add both Duff and Owen to that then we will have one of the quickest sides in the league. If we have to sell then I'd get rid of Luque and Emre. I like Emre but we can replace him in the centre with either Butt or Dyer. Plus Emre's wages are a lot more than Milner's. I would like to see the club offer Milner a new contract in the next couple of months partly to tie him down long-term and partly as an apology for the disgraceful way they treated him in the summer.
That won't happen though as that might represent something close to sound management and good planning which aren't Newcastle's strong suit.

I think as long as FS and GR are in control of who plays, who comes and who is out of the door, young players like Milner, Zoggy and to some extent Ramage and Taylor can expect to be dropped and sold on this coming January, GR does not have the sense to build on the youth we have in the team at present and could possibly sell both Milner and Zoggy to finance some obscure bid for another foreign misfit.
He should infact tie these lads down long term, cut the dead wood by all means, Luque, Baba, Carr, Bramble, Moore, Emre, then buy in some good English talent, Nugent from Preston to name but one, there are others out there just busting to wear the black and white and give 110%.

But sadly i dont think that will happen, nor do we have the scouts capable of uneathing that talent. We are at present a very poor and ordinary team and the quicker people realise that the better, dont let a 1-0 win over Portsmouth have you drooling at the mouth and Sibi scoring goals has people drooling over him as the answer, come on get real, we deserve better than that.

Completely agree with the comments on Milner. At the age of only 20, he is one of our and England's brightest prospects. To sell him would be absolutely folly. Within two or three years, assuming his current progress, he will be worth at least double, maybe triple his current value. Selling promising young players as Milner typifies Shepherd's myopic approach to management. Rather like a baby, he only gratifies instant needs, with little or no reference to the future. One can even envisage the sale of Milner to fund a move for Beckham, a la Owen previously. Yes we might sell millions of shirts, and have a great player for a year, but he will not be a player working consistently for us in 4 or 5 years time. With some of the promising youth coming forward, we should foster this young British talent (especially if the new 6 and 5 ruling is brought in.) I, and I hope the rest of our supporters, will be extremely vexed if Shepherd tries to sell Krul, Taylor, Rammage, Pattisson, Milner, or Caroll.

They are the future.

Not sure I'd lose any sleep if Ramage was off-loaded. Yeah he gives his all but he's not good enough for the Premiership. We don't call him 'Coca-Cola' for nothing.
Still a long way short of ever challenging the top 10 this season. We need probably 5 top class signings.

I like the line about Heather 'Plain Old' Mills... It's better than Heather 'Ladyshave Old' Mills

Ramage may be limited, but he always gives everything and, like Milner, can only get better with age.
He's a centre back playing at left back remember.

He reminds me of another Acadmey player who was stupidly sold by that idiot Graeme Souness - Aaron Hughes.
