A Question For Glenn Roeder Please

Posted by Luke on March 22, 2007 11:27 AM |

I'm going to Newcastle's training ground on Friday morning to interview Glenn Roeder and thought it would be good to give you the opportunity to ask your own questions given everything that has happened in the last week.

If you have something you would like to put to the United boss please leave a comment on this site before 9am on Friday morning and I'll select a couple and ask them for you.

Hopefully Glenn will answer them as honestly as he can and I'll put the replies, along with the names of the people whose questions were selected, up on the site on Friday.

Get your thinking caps on and please tell as many people as you can because the more questions I get the better.

Why don't you ask Glenn if he feels he made a tactical mistake in the second leg against Alkmaar. I doubt if he will answer it so how about this?

Why did he not sign Sol Campbell in the summer when he had the chance?

I consider Glenn to be a decent and honest man. If he feels he doesn't have the support of the fans will he do the honourable thing and resign?

Glenn,

In regards to you stating your admiration for Arsene Wenger and his scouting set-up recently, are NUFC currently in the process of doing anything pro-active to achieve a similar outcome as the Arsenal boss has in North London?

Amy wrote...

Why is that Glenn so often fails to make substitutions in time to affect the game?

for example against Alkmaar:

Why did Charles N Zogbia not come on until the last 5 minutes and James Milner was not used at all?

Is this a tactical error of judgement?

Too often this season he has not responded by using the subs wisely... why?

David Hughes wrote...

We've needed two central defenders for god knows how long now, and although Sol Campbell did have his personal problems, he has always been a top class centre back.
When Roeder said he didnt want to sign Campbell because of his age, I thought that was fair comment if he wanted to build a young team up and bring in some quality younger players.
Why then, did he go and sign an aging Antoine Sibierski, who was not needed half as much as a defender was, regardless of the contribution Sibierski has made, the Sol Campbell issue really wasnt cleared up, I can only imagine the better off situation we'd be in if Sol had have been at the back nurturing the likes of Taylor and Ramage.

What has happened to David Edgar?

He put in some impressive peformances against the likes of Manchester United and then only played a few games after that, but was not even in the reserve 16 last night.

so where is he, why isnt he in the squad and playing left back instead of Hunty/Carr/Tayls etc

dean mcdonald wrote...

why was James Milner absent in the Alkmaar game?

he has consistently been our best player this season and our biggest attacking threat, surely he would have made a difference at AZ

James Collins wrote...

Please could you ask him if David Edgar (whose contract expires this summer, I've been told) will be getting a new deal?

Thanks.

I wouldn’t know where to start with questions so I've taken some tips from the fanzine ‘the Mag’,
That’s a really nice jacket Mr Roeder; did you buy it at the same shop as Jose Mourinho?
Who did you room with when you were a player and do you have any funny stories?
Who had the worst dress sense when you were a player and who has now?
What was your favourite nightclub in the town and do you still go to Julies?
Do you have any funny stories about John Beresford and a daffodil?
What was your biggest ‘high’ as a player and as a manager?
What was the lowest point as player and manager?
Any regrets at joining Newcastle?
Who’s the best West Ham, Charlton or Orient?
Do you miss jellied eels?
What the hell are you playing at dragging this club to these sort of depths, do you really think you are up to the task of taking United to the position of challenging for honours?

Glen, all we want for a summer is a new back four, can you make our wish come true? we have one of the best forwards and midfields in the premiership we need a defence

How is it possible that supporters are able to predict with wearysome regularity your teams and tactics?

How do you defend peoples belief that you seem utterly unable to change a game and that your teams under perform, and fail to display any sort of drive whatsoever?

Has Nigel Pearson had quite the impact you initially predicted?

Did you or did you not meet with Woodgate, if not why would Woodgate say otherwise?

How would you say we have improved in the 14 months or so you have been in charge?

Don Copland wrote...

Why did the club go into the season with just one striker? Chopra had been sold, Shearer retired and Owen injured since June, while Shola was always a doubt with his hip?
And why did we go into the season without any cover for our two specialist full backs even though they are both injury prone?
Was this tantamount to accepting that we weren't going to challenge for honours this season?

Posted by: Don Copland  | March 22, 2007 3:34 PM

Ray Coxon wrote...

Can you remind Mr Roeder that Shearer retired last year and lumping the ball upfield to Sibierski or Martens is not gonna work. No goals in 4 matches, three against rubbish Premiership opponents proves that.

Anyway,one question:

Why does Roeder refuse to play Luque at all costs, and is more then ready to throw any random player from the reserves in instead of him?

Guy wrote...

Glenn, you have been through two transfer windows as manager, so how can you can you justify not spending any money on the defence in that time? Especially when it has been clear for a long time that the defence is our main weakness, aside to being the most one dimensional and incoherent teams in the league. Gross incompetence?

The team has been lacking passion & consistancy. Is this down to your motivational skills?

and

In regards to the above, the team is not doing what they are paid to do. A lot of the team have an excellent career behind them (on paper) but do the players and yourself want what's best for the team, or what's best for their pockets?

Frank Woodhouse wrote...

Why does he continue to use Acedemy/reserve centre halfs to fill the full back positions. Are our Acedemy/reserve full backs so awfull. Why can't we produce decent full backs ?(The last one we produced was Robbie Elliott over 15 years ago). If we cant produce natural full backs how about converting talented players who cant be guaranteed places in midfield/forward into full backs as has happened to Ashley Cole, Wayne Bridges, Roberto Carlos, Paolo Maldini etc..(Charles Nzogbia could be a usefull left back with some appropriate coaching !!) There will be many others i'm sure

Howard T. wrote...

A few questions for Glenn:

1) Some of our defensive performances this season have been, I'm sure you'll admit, completely clueless. Do you ever feel like selling them all to Accrington Stanley and starting over? More seriously, can we expect some serious efforts to get competitive in that area this summer?

2) More generally, what sort of progress has been made with regard to transfers this summer? Do we have targets already lined up or are we waiting?

3) What do you think is the minimum standard of performance required to earn a new contract with Newcastle United?

4) Will Emre be a Newcastle player next year?

5) How would you rate your own performance this season? Good? Fair? Poor?

Johnny wrote...

some questions for glenn.

What do you think is the best central midfield combination at the club and why?

Is trying to fit an ineffective Scott Parker into the team harming our side?

How are you looking to improve our scouting network so that we don't get lumbered with £9m flops in the future?

Are you just keeping the managerial seat warm for Shearer?

Which Academy players excite you the most?

How do you think Martins and Owen will fare as a partnership next season?

In this modern age don't you think we need more highly qualified coaches than the likes of Terry McDermott and Lee Clarke?(I appreciate that Pearson seems to fit the bill)

Have your learnt from your mistakes in the transfer market and vowed to snap up experienced players on free transfers as and when they are available rather than dithering and failing to get the players we need?

Bill Heggie wrote...

Ther is only one question he MUST answer.
When are you going to resign?

Posted by: Bill Heggie  | March 23, 2007 8:34 AM

Andy S wrote...

Why is our playing style so direct and dull?

Why do you keep using injuries as an excuse?

Why didnt you make more signings if these players arent good enough?

Why cant we pass the ball?

Why did you isolate Albert Luque? Surely a good manager gets the best out all players not just the ones he likes.

Why do you victimise James Milner?

Posted by: Andy S  | March 23, 2007 8:45 AM

micky duncan wrote...

On behalf of all the Newcastle fans that I know (and there are many) why are you even considering offering Bramble a new contract.
Is this the limit of our ambition ??

Posted by: micky duncan  | March 23, 2007 8:59 AM

Little Lord Fauntleroy wrote...

Are you going to try and sign Gooch on a permanent deal this summer?

Why do you continually play the most experienced players out of position instead having some fluidity and balance in the team?

When Stephen Carr returned to fitness, he was brought back in at full-back and Solano pushed forward to sacrifice one of our best 2 players this season (Milner). No-one I know likes Carr so why didn't you leave Solano at full-back and keep Milner in?

Have you ever considered playing Titus at left-back? Taylor & Gooch are far better at the heart of the defence, and as a naturally left-footed player, Titus could play left-back. This would also offer some protection to our goal if & when he makes a grievous error.

If money were no object and all players at the top of your shopping list could come and wanted to come, how many players would you like to sign in the summer and in which positions?

Do you think Owen & Oba can play together or are they too similar?

What is your REALISTIC target for next season? With the current squad it is evident that we are nowhere near good enough to be challenging for honours that the fans, who pay your wages and are vital to the club, desire and expect.

One more. Do you hate Fat Freddie as much as the rest of us?

David Hingley wrote...

What would be wrong with giving Albert Luque a run of games for the rest of the season in order to fianlyl prove whether he is capable of making the grade in the Premiership, especially given we have no chance of honours and are extremely light in the striking dept? In my opinion Luque has never been given the run he needs to prove whether he is good enough or not.

Do you agree that sometimes a player needs a pro-active and unwavering demonstration of faith in him from the manager to get over his problems with confidence?

Note : why does Titus Bramble keep getting these opportunities but Luque not?

Lee Jameson wrote...

why have contract talks stalled with players we need at the club in my opinon!? players like solano and bramble, contrary to popular belief are needed! i cant understand why people rate taylor and gooch ahead of bramble. if we had taylor moore bramble and edgar as the back line, then we wudnt be far wrong through the season!

Dear Glenn,

In the summer surely full backs must be top priority. Stephen Carr and Celestine Babayaro are clearly not up to it and also why are these players undroppables in your team?

Posted by: will  | April 16, 2007 8:13 PM

Jill Appleby wrote...

As I respect Solano so much as player I would really like to see him back in his old position as his crosses are what gets us the goals. Owen needs service. How about selling Martins for the 10million? Play Carroll and Owen up front, then with Solano, Dyer, Milner and Parker in midfield then Taylor, Ramage,
Butt and Carr in defence. Also try Pavel in goal if Given is injured. Harper's idea of just punching the ball away and giving the opposition another bite at the pie is crazy.
