Don't Drink And Sail

Posted by Luke on March 19, 2007 3:22 PM |

England cricketer gets drunk after defeat, goes for early-hours jaunt on pedalo and falls into the sea and is rescued. Andrew Flintoff says sorry and admits he is ashamed about his behaviour.

Newcastle United lose against AZ Alkmaar and Charlton. Supporters wish players and manager would get pissed, go for an early-hours jaunt in the North Sea - but really aren't that bothered if they are rescued!

As for Freddie, tut tut. In the big wild world, letting off steam after a frustrating day at the office is perfectly acceptable. I've spent a few Friday nights lying on the floor with the remnants of my dinner splashed on my trousers while attempting to eat a chicken kebab and shouting at nobody in particular.

It's fine, although I must apologise to that student who had fallen asleep in Shindig. That sick on your jumper was mine, but lying down in the corner of a nightclub sin't sensible. Actually, wait a minute, maybe they were in need of emergency medical attention and all I did was throw up on them. Oops, I feel bad now......

Back to my point, if I had one. When you are a professional sportsman it really isn't the best idea when you've got another game 24 hours later in sweltering heat and you are being rowdy in front of supporters still annoyed at the way you were beaten by New Zealand a few hours earlier.

Now, you know me, I'm not one to make sweeping moral judgements (sic) and I do think the whole thing has been blown a little out of proportion, but I don't think someone who supposedly has leadership qualities should behave in this way.

It does not set a good example to the rest of the team and it isn't how professional, and I repeat, professional, sportsman should behave. Footballers aren't allowed out by their clubs 48 hours before a game so why should cricketers from Lancashire who haven't scored any runs in yonks?
