I Can't Believe I Just Said That
In light of Jose Mourinho's rant after the goal-less draw with Newcastle about it being against the rules to award Chelsea a penalty, I'd like to ask the question, is it also against rules for Chelsea to fail to win gracefully?
I never thought I'd say it and I'm sure neither did those Newcastle fans who chanted it on Sunday, but Iâ≢d rather Manchester United won the title this season. There, I've said it, I feel a little dirty now, but I've said it and itâ≢s true. I can't cope with a third-successive Premiership title for Chelsea.
Given Mourinhoâ≢s blatant attempt to swing refereeâ≢s opinion in his favour, I wonder what else Chelseaâ≢s manager believes is against the rules. The laws of gravity perhaps? How about the laws of physics? And where does he stand on heavy petting in the showers because itâ≢s not allowed at my local swimming pool and Iâ≢m sure that applies to everyone, not just Chelsea.
Enough of Chelsea, however. Well almost, I see on Sky Sports News that Chelsea have actually been given more penalties than Manchester United this season, while the Red Devils have also conceded more than the Blues despite John Terryâ≢s liberal interpretation of the rules governing handball and physical contact in the area!
Anyway, to Newcastle and how about Titus Bramble eh? Not seen since Alkmaar, he returns to the side because Glenn Roeder appears to have fallen out with Craig Moore after substituting the Australian in the first half against Portsmouth and excels.
Mind you, I still donâ≢t think weâ≢ll be seeing much more of Titus who will still be off the summer after Roederâ≢s recent treatment. Nevertheless, this was another frustrating reminder of what Bramble is capable of. His Newcastle career, though, will always be a case of what might have been I guess!
Credit must also go to Steven Taylor as Stephen Carr. Both struggled against Pompey, but they looked good against Chelsea. Carr even managed to wind up Mourinho with his not-spotted handball in the area so, for once, well done!
Now, without prompting an argument - as if Iâ≢d ever do such a thing - it is worth pointing out Newcastleâ≢s midfield also performed well. Then again, dare I suggest that the central midfield has been at its best when Nicky Butt and Emre are together?
That, of course, makes a rather awkward decision for Roeder when Scott Parker is fit and one which he has, so far, always played safe with. The captain always plays and, at the moment, Emre is the one who makes way.
Personally, I donâ≢t think Butt and Parker can play together in midfield, but Roeder seems unwilling to tell either of them that they are being dropped/rested. It will be interesting to see what happens against Reading on Monday.
Hey ho, a point against Chelsea is a decent result at the end of a rubbish season and means none of the â∠ÂBig Fourââ¬? have won at St Jamesâ≢s Park in the league this season for the first time in the Premiership. A crumb of comfort and all that.
Letâ≢s hope the team manages to perform just as well at Reading next week. Call my a pessimist - honestly Iâ≢ve been called a lot worse - but I doubt it given the displays at Wigan, Bolton, Everton, Fulham, Portsmouth and Charlton this season! What was that about Newcastle being consistently inconsistent?
Finally, you will all be pleased to know that Leyton Orient won at Bradford City at the weekend and, as a result, are all but certain of avoiding relegation. Superb!

So it was a penalty then.
And what was going on with
Sibierski getting Terry in a bear hug at every corner and free kick?
That aside, Newcastle were good on Sunday and Chelsea were poor.
Do most Toon fans really want old red nose and the incredibly handsome Mr Neville lifting the Premiership trophy? Have you forgotten Fergie's goading of Keegan not so long ago? I can assure you, back then, 100 per cent of Chelsea fans wanted Newcastle to win it.
In fact, I'd prefer Newcastle to Man Utd, Arsenal or Liverpool.
I think Mourinho and Cech praised Newcastle's performance after the game. His dig about penalties was a little tongue in cheek. Though the author seems to agree he had a point.
Mourinho isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the media often twist what he says or don't run his comments in full. Would the author not welcome him to St James Park, if the opportunity arose? Of course he would.
By the way, the following makes no sense whatsoever: "Given Mourinhoâ≢s blatant attempt to swing refereeâ≢s opinion in his favour, I wonder what else Chelseaâ≢s manager believes is against the rules. The laws of gravity perhaps? How about the laws of physics? And where does he stand on heavy petting in the showers because itâ≢s not allowed at my local swimming pool and Iâ≢m sure that applies to everyone, not just Chelsea."
No, it still doesn't make any sense.
I know what you mean Luke. It hurts to say you want Manchester United to win anything, but they play better football and Chelsea have become arrogant and annoying since Roman Abramovich bailed them out from financial ruin.
How I pray for a mysterious Russian to come and pay Freddie Shepherd off. No anyone will do!
It is very strange to be wanting Manchester United to win the title, but Chelsea simply have too much money and are far too up themselves to like so it is the lesser of two evils.
It was funny watching all those cockneys leave SJP on Sunday with faces like thunder!
Manchester United don't concede crucial penalties, it's either a miracle or itâ≢s something else!
Referees seem to take a moment longer to think about the decisions which involve the Salford club, than they usually do for other teams.
Iâ≢m not saying they are corrupt in any way, just a little more studious.
I'm sure Mourinho`s interviewer was dying to reply "If you were awarded the penalty do you feel your team may have tested the Newcastle goalkeeper ?" but he decided to let Jose rant on instead.
I seem to recall Mourinho said that Chealsea did not deserve to win and Newcastle deserved their point. He even singled out Taylor and Bramble for their good displays.
The kind of tabloid journalism displayed by Luke in this article we could well do without.
Note From Luke
Could well do without?! Charming!
HA! what a sorry lot you are! I still remember YOUR faces when Collymore scored! So you want Man United to win eh?
I can't believe you've just said Spurs were interested in your mate Kieron Dyer who is a bigger Sick note than Darren Anderton, it made my day! Something is afoot though, this sounds like a sales pitch to me! Now who can match his reported 80,000 wages, and are daft enough to do it hmmm? ...No itâ≢s gone!
