Did anyone see Sven-Goran Eriksson on the BBC's new "hard-hitting" sports show Inside Sport this week? Wasn't it great to see the balding one again, all those memories of quarter-final penalty shoot-out defeats, it almost brought a tear to my eye!
He had a snazzy pair of blue-rimmed specs on and he ummed and ahhed a lot and said absolutely nothing as usual. My personal highlight was Gabby Logan’s attempt to prise some secret information out of him about whether he has a job lined up for next season
She asked him the same question - who are you going to manage next - in different guises five times - and got the same answer - I’m not telling you - in five different ways. Great stuff. It was kinda painful to watch, but fun nonetheless.
I guess the biggest problem with Steve McClaren is he has made Sven look good. Best win percentage since Sir Alf Ramsey, best attempt at a comb over since Sir Bobby Charlton, that sort of thing.
Come to think of it, English football could disintegrate so much that Eriksson will also become a knight of the realm one day. The way things are looking under Steve, just qualifying for a major tournament will be a major achievement.
Now that, of course, is just silly to say. England might have played like a pub team which has just celebrated a stag do in Prague, but England’s players are all extremely confident that they will still qualify for Austria and Switzerland, blah, de blah, de, blah.
The fact that the FA have had to arrange a special B international is just so the coaching staff can have a look at some of the fringe players in the squad, it’s not because they are panicking and are contemplating major changes for the summer internationals
And of course it has nothing to do with the fact that McClaren desperately needs a fit Michael Owen against Estonia and, judging be his efforts for Newcastle at the end of the season, he desperately needs another 90 minutes under his belt. It’s quite a lot of trouble to go to for one player isn’t it?!
Then again, if B international are the football equivalent of a Hollywood B Movie, low budget, low quality and low interest, they couldn’t have picked a better venue in Burnley!
As for Michael, well he can take a break from his horses and concentrate on using the summer internationals to put himself in the shop window. You suspect he’s fully committed to Newcastle as long as something better doesn’t come along!
