Transfer Saga Of The Summer Has Already Begun

Posted by Luke on May 9, 2007 11:53 AM |

My word, Big Sam hasn't even signed a contract at Newcastle and, as far as we know, he hasn't even agreed to come to St James's Park yet, but already the big lad is facing a few problems.

To coin a phrase used by others in the media, it is the "worst kept secret in football" that Allardyce is going to succeed Glenn Roeder as United manager.

But even before he has got his feet under the table, before he has unwrapped his new blue tooth headset and before he has given the usual new manager's press conference about unlocking the potential at one of the biggest clubs in the country, Allardyce has some transfer speculation to deal with.

Oh and surprise, surprise, it centres on Michael Owen and fans' favourite Kieron Dyer. Apparently, Owen is off to Manchester United - not heard that one before - and Allardyce will sacrifice Dyer to raise funds for a major rebuilding project.

Alright, calm down, the season hasn't even finished yet. At least give Michael the chance to go away to play for England before you start linking him with a move to the Premiership champions. He hasn't even scored a goal yet, although Watford might make convenient opposition on Sunday to sort that out. Then we can have, lots of back to his best stories etc etc...

Nope, you want to do it already, before the new manager has arrived and just 24 hours after Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said he had three main targets this summer. Oh well, may as well start the "transfer saga of the summer" early I suppose. Maybe Newcastle will respond by trying to sign Wayne Rooney! Oh yes, that's right, we've been there already haven't we.

Oh and there has also been the mention of the get out clause in the speculation, you know the one that Freddie Shepherd has always denied exists in Owen's contract. This time, though, it has fallen from £12m to £9m. Phew, I'm exhausted already.

Right, okay Micky, £110k clicks, Little Mo or whatever your nickname is these days. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for the time being. You should just be concentrating on your football, regaining match sharpness and your England place for the vital Euro 2008 qualifier against the mighty Estonia.

But then, before you go away on your summer holiday, can you please let us know what your plans are? Just a hint that you will be at St James's Park next season, or whether you've had enough already.

Do you feel a moral obligation to Newcastle and their supporters for the money you have earned while injured? Or is your career too short to waste outside a top four club challenging for silverware at home and abroad? If you want to tell me that in an exclusive interview, great, but a press conference will do!

As for Dyer, well I've been saying for ages (well two weeks almost) that Tottenham want him, Newcastle's supporters don't and that tends to equal summer transfer. Unless Big Sam wants to keep him of course. Should probably wait until he has arrived to ask him though don't you think?!

Luke, you only have to look as far as your sister paper, The Chronicle, for more of this nonsense. Tonight, the Chronicle claims: 'Houllier and Sven eye job'. According to Alan Oliver: "Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has thrown his hat into the Newcastle United ring. And so too has former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson." Oh, really? Some basic investigation on the internet reveals that the Eriksson story is based on his agent, Athole Still, responding in the affirmative to a 'would Sven be interested if Newcastle asked him?'-type question, and then swiftly distancing himself from the myriad 'Sven wants Toon hotseat' stories that emerged. In addition, Sky are tonight reporting that Houllier "has told Sky Sports News that he has NOT [my emphasis] thrown his hat into the ring to succeed Roeder." So much for Oliver's two-hats-in-the-ring exclusive. I'm also bemused by Oliver's claim to have taken "calls from Spain, Greece, France and Norway from people representing would-be United managers." Perhaps he can tell us who all these jobseekers are? Now that really would be an exclusive.

The quickest way for Big Sam to get everyone on side would be for him to announce that he is getting rid of Dyer. However, i suspect Shepherd is saving himself a few pennies by changing manager so that the new guy will spend the summer 'assessing' the current squad rather than sacking the lot of them and buying a whole new team.

I reckon Owen will stay, on the grounds that he's probably not as big a mercenary as some fans think. Dyer is another matter. I'm praying that BSA doesn't think he can 'resurrect' his career (along with other buffoons like Shambles, Baba, Carr etc). Dyer has actually gone backwards in the time he's been here. His arrogance is overwhelming and he has to be peddled, hopefully to join up with his bling buddy at Spurs...

You tell him Luke. If Michael Owen really feels "guilty" about being injured the whole time at Newcastle let's hear him say he wants to stay and play for us next season.

luke if Sam has resigned his contract - Bolton have accepted it - he is out of contract & work - no matter how long there was to run on the now torn up contract.how the h##l can the TOON be expected to pay Bolton any compensation . if he is still being paid thats between him & Bolton .??
will NUFC expect compensation from CHELSEA when Reoder takes over in August !!? he resigned.

Note From Luke
Funnily enough, I read the other day that Chelsea will part company with their youth coach at the end of the season so maybe Roeder can get a job at Stamford Bridge.

As for compensation due to Bolton, I guess it all depends on what Sam agreed with them when he left. I suspect it was that he wouldn't take another job before the end of the season, but I'm not certain.

Why o why are people clamouring for Sam Allerdyce. What has he won ? He plays bullying, unattractive, timewasting and boring football. The last English
manager to win the Premiership was Howard Wilkinson ! What makes Freddie Shepherd think he can change this by employing Sam Allerdyce ? Erikson is the most succesful England manager with a win rate of 68%, even our great Sir Bob could only manage 66% and Alf Ramsey 37%. He also managed to win the UEFA cup with a bunch of part timers at Gothenburg. If Newcastle are not again to be a mid table outfit we need a proven continental manager and we should be looking at Sven or Gerard.

Hi Luke,

I really hope that Glenn Roeder does end up somewhere as to me he always had Newcastle's best interests at heart and the only thing that bothers me is that he did not buy Sol campbell when he had the chance to do so last summer.

It's a joke that Freddie Shepherd is still in the box seat at newcastle as rememember the fans were chanting him out and not really GR, so i guess he has a free pass to do what he wants at newcastle.

I would be happy that Kieron Dyer is let go and i don't think he has done enough to stay anyway and i hope we get the money and run.

With your contacts is there any names that the new manager will bring in as normally Alan Oliver gets all the scoops. (had to put that one in)

Sven has no chance unless against the odds that SA turns us down again and any news on who SA will bring with him staff wise.

Andrew
Note From Luke

All the scoops! As Alan would say, I've almost choked on my cornflakes!
Until Sam arrives and has a look at what he has inherited I don't think even he will know who he is looking for. Tel Ben Haim and Kevin Nolan could well follow him from Bolton, though, and what price Nicolas Anelka finally becoming a Newcastle player.

1) whatever Sam agreed with Bolton must be only between them -not a new employer ?

2) TOON are reportedly waiting until after the end of the season!

I'm still confused but glad Roeder is getting a start at CHELSEA.
Ferguson will be terrified!

Once again our chairman feels the need to open his mouth at precisely the wrong time.
What kind of message does this send out to Michael Owen when the chairman tries to claim that none of the top 4 teams would be interested in him, hardly inspires confidence in his abilities or any loyalty does it??. Then a cheap jibe at Nancy Del'Olio when totally unwarranted, the guy just doesn't know when to keep his trap shut to avoid further embarrassment in the press. The root cause of the NUFC demise remains as vocal as ever.

Pete, you obviousley haven't seen Freddie's new video on 'you Tube' in which he show's off his intellectual acumen with an almost statesman like response to questions on Michael's Owen's future.

Unfortunately too much of NUFC is owned by Freddy and his friends in the Hall family. The big 4 all have more professional board members and their success may be a result of this.

Luke,

Sam is the wrong person for Newcastle United. What has he won!! Nothing and it's only this season that he had done well for Bolton. Players he has brought in at Bolton are not all that, only difference between us Newcastle United and them, is the players at Bolton had more passion, beliefe and determination ! OH, and hardly no Injuries ! !

If you want the right manager, I still say, Houllier! Why, because look what he did to Liverpool. When he was at Liverpool, he over achieved and delivered what he said he would do. Look what he has done at Lyon ! ! He Knows how to get the best out of players and Like Sam, spend little money... Only diffence is, If your'e a premiership side trying to attract a player, your'e gonna pay over the odds. Where as other European & Intl: teams will pay the right price, for what the player is worth....!

Sidwell, gone to Chelsea and I don't blame him after what's gone on at Newcastle. I think Freddy & all management at Newcastle need to buck up their ideas and stop blaming the Manager.

We had a squad, which looked good on paper, but reallity it's beeen the players who just don't seem to care and don't have the drive to succeed ! !

Freedy to carry Owen back to Liverpool, I'll Bloody help him.. It's been on the cards for along time now. You ask any Man Utd & Liverpool fan. I bet, Owen will go to Man Utd and Smith will come to us and maybe, we might get Saha back ! !

So, Division 1 Next year ! ! Who want's to come and play at Newcastle and with a manager no one wants, players who under achieve and no commitment??

Remember, Sam Is not the man and all Sam did was eat Green Ham ! !

Gerrard Houllier is the Manager we need and I think if he comes he will make sure Owen is a priority and just maybe we might get somewhere in the League and get the players we want aswell as turning the club around, which he has done for Liverpool and Lyon ! ! !

If Freedy picks Sam & Sam does not do what he should of done at Newcastle, then we the Fans have the option to choose the manager aswell as getting rid of Shephard !

If we the fans that is, choose Houllier to be manager and Freddy listens to what we have to say for once, We the fans have to take credit and stand by both management.

1 thing to remember, is Newcastle United & Freedy have not listened to us once in 10 years. They all say, we take on board what you have said and will do something about it... Then why have we still got the worse defence in the premiership ! ! ? ?

GERRARD HOULLIER IS THE BETTER MANAGER COMPARED TO BIG SAM... jUST LOOK AT THE STATS.........

Regards Mark B London

Why is everyone so negative? Moaning about what Newcastle United choose to do isn't going to benefit anyone. I especially feel that the comment towards Alan Oliver was bloody unecessary, he's a good journalist and has been since the Chronicle brought him in. How about we all stop being so pessimistic and start, for a change, to actually back our football club?
