Bad Boy Joey Barton And Some Nice New Trainers

Posted by Luke on June 7, 2007 12:06 PM |

I wonder if Joey Barton celebrated his signing for Newcastle United by smoking a big fat Cuban cigar. Although, I'm sure if he did, he disposed of it sensibly and didn't stub it out on anyone's face!

Given Barton's colourful history of off-field misdemeanours, Sam Allardyce has shown a certain amount of bravery in making him his first signing as Newcastle manager, but talking to United's new boss on Wednesday, there is no doubt in his mind that the player's quality on the pitch is all that matters.

Whether that is a view shared by the former Manchester City player he burnt with a cigar at the club's Christmas party a few years back is unlikely and certainly there are those who cannot look beyond Barton's bad boy reputation once he is left to his own devices away from football.

There isn't a player - no not even Craig Bellamy - who has attracted more headlines for causing trouble off the pitch than Joey in recent times, but let's give the guy a chance.

He hasn't done anything wrong yet and if Allardyce manages to tame his wild social life, the Magpies have just signed one of the best central midfielders in the country and a player who, in stark contrast to some of those who have pulled on the black and white shirt - past and present - will give everything to the team's cause.

If Allardyce is true to his word, he can control the player's knack for self harm and channel his energy into playing football and it is worth remembering that, if he fails, it is not only the player's reputation on the line.

Allardyce was very impressive in our first one-to-one chat, although he was rather rude about my new gleaming white Adidas trainers. I hadn't expected to be summoned to Newcastle's training ground for a chat so I was a little under dressed, but while I respect Sam's thoughts on football, I'm not sure he's qualified as a fashion critic!

Anyway, he was honest and forthright about Barton and was also good enough to confirm that he has virtually completed the signing of Mark Viduka and that he is also hoping to make Tal Ben Haim his third recruit at St James's Park.

If we get over the fact that Viduka has turned Newcastle down three times in the past and has a questionable fitness record - particularly during the winter months - he looks like a good signing, particularly if Newcastle hold on to Oba Martins and Michael Owen. I suspect one of those will go, but I wouldn't be surprised if Allardyce has already lined up another striker anyway. Nicolas Anelka seems to be in his thoughts, but we'll have to wait and see.

As for Ben Haim, he looks like another good signing. Strong, resolute, determined and, as we saw with his running battle with Wayne Rooney during England's game against Israel last season he has a nasty side which, as much as I hate to say it, isn't necessarily a bad thing when you are a Premiership defender - just look at John Terry.

Allardyce was also very good on his plans for the future. He is hoping to improve the club's training facilities at Longbenton and is determined to implement new levels of professionalism in preparation and conditioning.

He is also excited about new owner Mike Ashley's intentions for the club which is encouraging. Certainly it looks as though it is going to give him considerable financial clout in the transfer market. I'd expect to see at least two wingers, another striker, two centre backs and a left back arrive before the start of next season.

Meanwhile, Barton will get an early taste of Allardyce's leadership skills when the pair play in the Professional Football Association's Cricket team against the Professional Cricketer's Association in a charity match at Old Trafford next week. I never had Barton down as the cricketing type, but there you go!

I don't think Barton is the cricketing type, I have been reliably informed that Bartons contract includes the following stipulation: "I (Joey Barton) will never venture more than 100 metres away from my babysitter (Sam Allardyce)"

I'm fairly happy with the signings of Mark Viduka and Joey Barton and I think Ben Haim will be another useful addition.

However, I've read rumours linking us with Wes Brown. Just because he plays for Manchester United doesn't make him any good. I hope we don't get him.

There have also been reports saying that Craig Bellamy wants to come back to Newcastle. Can you imagine him and Barton on a night out together, it would be carnage.

It isn't the cricket that Joey Barton likes, it's the noise the bat makes when hitting his team-mates skulls!!
No matter what people say about his off-field antics, the kid's a talent! We knew Bellamy was a little so and so off the pitch but we still loved to see him play.
Barton is the future, and to all those who disagree and are upset that Parker left, I have only to say that the difference is Joey Barton wants to play for us, Parker doesn't.

As Luke mentioned we may be in the market for Ben Haim, I would like to know if he's any good? Don't know much about him but surely he's a step up from Titus? Weren't Chelsea interested in signing him too?

Although I wasn't convinced Allardyce was the right man to step into the SJP Hot Seat, it is very difficult not to get carried away with the excitement that seems to be sweeping through Town again.... Blind Faith? I love it!!

Big Sam like KK was born to manage Newcastle and there is an incredible air of optimism about the club again. With Mr Ashley's money and the pressure being taken off Freddie Shephard to concentrate on the day to day running all looks well for the future.Let's get rid of Owen who is clearly not interested and bring in Anelka ,Baines,Ben Haim and the Czech lad.Let's give Sam time and forget he ever went near that lot down the road....we all make mistakes!!

So Barton "hasn't done anything wrong yet," you say. How about being on police bail until July 11 for repeatedly punching a City team mate and leaving him looking like the elephant man. What happnd to the 5.5 million fee if he goes to jail? Guaranteed trouble ahead.

Malta Mag, there is always a massive wave of optimism for each new manager at Newcastle. When each one arrives the talk of Champions League starts and after the fiorst defeat it will be Allardyce out. Its seems to be a cycle you can't get out of.
