Lucky Enough So Hello Again Steve

Posted by Luke on November 18, 2007 12:30 PM |

Well, alright then Steve McClaren, you may have made a complete mess of this qualification campaign, but you can stay as England coach. After all, better to be a lucky manager than a good one isn't it?!

I hate to say I told you so - I don't really - but didn't I say Israel would beat Russia at the weekend and that lucky little so and so would end up keeping his job. As anyone who can remember Middlesbrough's run to the Uefa Cup final a couple of years ago will testify, the red-faced one has made a habit of unlikely and dramatic last-minute escapes!

So, it's not cheerio Steve just yet, but let's not count our chickens before they're hatched, put all our eggs in one basket or some other egg-related phrase which means not getting ahead of ourselves, we've still got to draw with Croatia on Wednesday night.

For what's it's worth, England will get the point they need and then a player, probably Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard, will immediately say this is England's best chance to win a major tournament since, well the last one in Germany!

Whatever happens in the Croatia game, McClaren has had a very fortunate escape and I stand by my original piece, England should not have made such hard work of qualification, they should not be relying on Israel to do them a favour. That they have is a damning indictment of the players and coaching staff. End of story.

So Steve, grin smugly to yourself as much as you want, but please don't insult our intelligence by saying you never doubted England would reach Euro 2008 because, let's be honest, you'd probably already started to clear your desk, taking your Kirsty Gallagher 2007 calendar with you.

Mind you, I might just have a sneaky £10 on England to win the European Championships now. Anyone remember the England rugby team? Then again, they lost in the final didn't they so maybe I'll just put £5 on them to get out of their group!

Of course, England's lucky break should not mean we ignore Michael Owen's latest injury breakdown. Early estimates suggest the Newcastle striker will be missing for six weeks with a torn thigh muscle. Cheers England. That means, by the turn of the year, the club's record signing will still have only started 21 games for the club he joined for £17m two-and-a-half years ago.

It will, however, appease those supporters who want to see Obafemi Martins given an extended run in the team, it will also mean Shola Ameobi will be involved before the opening of the January transfer window and it means Michael can spend some time pondering his next Horse Racing purchase.

I REALLY think it has to be about time we cut our losses on Mr Owen and put him firmly in the ‘Tried but failed’ column.

Lets put my opinions about his more apparent desire to play for England to one side, just focus on his merits as a player, he’s one of the best poachers of his generation. . . I’m struggling here. . .

He ISN’T the player that would have been an asset to any team, that he undoubtedly was in 1998-2001, (When I actually said he was burnt out) he hasn’t lost his instinct, but the pacey lightening quick, goal machine that once terrorised the Premier League (And Newcastle) has long gone, replaced by a weaker, more injury prone goal poacher.

His appearance record was always reasonable at Liverpool, but was always pulling a hamstring here and there, now he seems like he can’t get through more than half a dozen outings (Usually for England) before ending up in the treatment room (Usually for England and usually for a long period of time.

Newcastle United need a fit and functional strike force, If we were relying on Viduka and Owen, we’d be up Premier League creek, without a strike force.

And onto Mr McClaren, he’s a lucky boy, he’s a clown of a manager (Ah but at least clowns are funny) I don’t think Wednesday is a forgone conclusion but the chances are the point will be achieved.

But if it’s not, please F.A, come and take Allardyce before it’s too late!

Paul.

Note From Luke
I think patience with Owen is wearing a little thin with most people. However, it'll be just Newcastle's luck that they sell him in the summer and he will score 25 goals and stay injury free for Manchester City next season!

The Michael Owen story is a Newcastle United tragedy, or should that be a farce. He talks a good game about wanting to play for Newcastle and how important we are, and then he returns from international duty with another injury.
Your prediction that Owen would be Newcastle's top goalscorer this season is starting to look a little far-fetched Luke!

So golden Boy's crocked again playing for his first love, by time he gets back he will have missed more than a seasons worth of league games due to England duty, I could care less about England and Their xenophobic fans ?. If Sven is daft enough to give us £6 million for this perma-crock, I say take his hand off and reinvest it in a player that would actually like to sign for Newcastle, someone that can play more than twenty odd games in two and a half years. No doubt We'll be getting all the spiel abot feeling guilty, heres a thought Michael, donate all Your wages to charity till You get back playing for Our club, someone other than You should benefit out of this on-going farce. On a brighter note, Oba Martins will now get a run, good !, here's hoping he and Viduka can ghet a partnership going.

I completely agree with everything Paul wrote about Owen.

All of my friends ask what is Owen like at Newcastle? my answer is that he is awful and painful to watch. People say “but he is a goal scorer though, but at what cost? He doesn’t do anything else, he doesn’t even do what he used to do very well anymore.

It’s a real shame he isn’t the player he was (which he hasn’t been for a very long while), we definitely signed him when he was finished. It’s a shame because he seems like a nice guy, a real pro. He should have stayed at Madrid, where he can play about 20games each season, which his body could probably take.

As for what who or how we play without Owen, it should be a blessing in disguise right? We could just replace him with Martins, who is everything Owen isn’t, quick, dynamic and powerful. But why do I get the feeling Oba won’t get his chance upfront and we will be playing that dreadful Bolton system of 4-5-1, with the slow lazy Viduka upfront and Oba pushed out wide at best.

Please can we all get behind a campaign to remove Alladyce.

You know, I honestly think McClaren is a decent manager. I admire the way he handles the national tabloid press who, let's be honest, at times are a bit of a joke with England. One win and we're the best in the world and then a defeat and we're worse than, say, Scotland or someone. Whether he's a good enough coach or not I don't know but if he were to go then we'll have the merry-go-round of a new manager eventually coming in after the top 3 targets turn it down. God forbid, we'll then end up with Allardyce as national boss??

Hello Luke, I haven't communicated for some weeks due to my having remained in hiding since the Portsmouth fiasco. Living here in Southsea, unfortunately juxtaposed to Portsmouth and its knuckle-dragging inbred suporters, I changed my accent, pretending to be French, rather than invite a tirade of infantile gloating. However, time is a great healer and they've got other things to talk about now. I'm simply writing to say that supporting England is uncannily like supporting Newcastle United. Apprehension over upcoming games and frequent disappointment at the outcome go hand in glove with both teams. Both teams also provide a wealth of defensive blunders to be enjoyed by spectators and opposition forwards. Halcyon days for the game eh?

Hello Luke and welcome back to the Field of Dreams. The beat goes on. We plumbed the depths against Portsmouth and instead of bouncing back aginst Liverpool we produced another performance on the wrong side of mediocre. Is it something in the water? I suspect that we're in for a long wait before we can look forward with confidence to visits from any teams stronger than Middlesbrough. There's no apparent cure for the malaise that overwhelms our team season after season. Nobody is asking for the league title, just a respectable place in the top half of the table. However, that still seems too much to set our sights on and is apparently a long way off.I don't think it's just Sam Allardyce who's to blame. It's more deeply seated than that. Maybe we'll just have to grit our teeth and accept that redemption will take a long time to arrive. It took Ferguson a season or two to effect an improvement at Manchester. Perhaps they should send the team onto the pitch to the tune of "In the Bleak Midwinter" rather than Local Hero.I'm stumped. Yours, Tony Brown.

Note From Luke
Funnily enough, I've just been on a tour of SJP as part of the Ultimate Newcastle Experience Package - see tomorrow's paper - and I think I may have discovered why Newcastle are so poor. The home dressing is more like a health spa than a changing room, which makes the soft and pampered. Whatever happened to cold showers?
