Bah Humbug

Posted by Luke on December 24, 2007 11:19 AM |

Newcastle United really know how to wish their supporters a Merry Christmas don’t they. Gee, thanks Sam, I’ve always wanted a home draw against Derby County, so beautifully wrapped in “we deserved to win the game wrapping paper as well. You shouldn’t have...no really you shouldn’t have.

I had argued long and hard last week that the 1-0 win at Fulham should have been celebrated and that Sam and his players deserved credit for the victory, even if the performance was poor and the standard of football ugly.

Perhaps I was wrong because the performance and standard of football was almost just as bad against Derby and this time there wasn’t even a victory to console anyone with.

Yes, winning ugly away from home is a habit worth having in football and all the best teams in the country are capable of doing it, but nobody has played this badly at home against a team who will almost certainly be back in the Championship next season and who had, before Sunday, scored only one goal away from home all season.

Newcastle fans, I think, have accepted the Kevin Keegan brand of football is not going to return to SJP and they accept results are the most important thing when it comes to judging a manager, but they cannot and should not have to accept dire performances like this, at home, against the worst team in the league.

Away at Fulham on a freezing cold Saturday night, maybe, but not at home when they, at considerable cost, come to be entertained. Not good enough, no matter what statistics you gather from Prozone or whatever stupid bloody Computer program they use!

Sam claimed his side had not got what they deserved because they had lots of the ball and had more shots on goal. Well, actually, they did I’m afraid. Yes they had lots of possession and did carve out a few clear cut chances - particularly in the first half - but how many outstanding saves did the Derby goalkeeper Stephen Bywater have to make? By my count, just one brave stop to fist away James Milner’s second-half free kick.

This was, to use language about as strong as I can get away with on this blog, crap, garbage and useless. I think you will appreciate that, should you meet me in a pub over the Festive period, my language would be considerably more colourful.

Being the fair-minded, look at the wider picture kinda guy I am, I should also point out that Newcastle have extended their unbeaten run to four games and have risen to ninth in the table. Mark Viduka’s performance and goals also illustrated what a class player he can be on his day.

That, though, is the extent of my Christmas goodwill. As for Alan Smith as captain, I’m just baffled. Apart from Arsenal at home, has he had an effective game for Newcastle? He has played at least five games in his preferred position as an out-and-out striker and has he ever looked like scoring?

Oh and why oh why did Newcastle’s midfield compromise of Nicky Butt, Joey Barton and Smith for so long in the second half, with Emre sat on the bench and United chasing the game against poor opposition?

As Viduka said after the game, it was a draw that felt like a defeat. Yes Mark, you’re right, it did. Bah humbug! Orient have slipped down to fifth in the table as well, double bah humbug.

My...Luke, your venom is almost as sharp as the razor blades in my throat, sinuses, and head. I dragged myself from my miserable pit with the third or fourth demon bug I've contracted in as many months to watch that c**p as you described it. The good bit is that I got a ticket from a mate and don't have to go back next week. I'm one of the lucky ones who don't presently have a season ticket. In fact my last one was during the second tragic season of Dalglish the dismantler, when I sold it halfway through to a Mongolian camel trader I'd found on e-bay. I managed to convince him that Geordies descended from ancient Ashkenazi Steppe dwellers and were crazy about dromedaries. The previous mug, a colour blind Mackem from Doxford park just twigged when I bent over to see what had fallen onto the sawdust floor in his local and I said who's keys are these? Sorry mate I digress, a bit like our team when at crucial moments that call for intense concentration, they start reflecting on how Rhydian should have won x-factor, or the old bird who's dad died every week. Forgive me for my sarcasm but they started it by coming onto the pitch, and foul language isn't an option here. Bottom, bottom line is, Sam needs sacking, fast! Terry Mac and Nigel Pearson could not possibly do worse than Allardice until we get a good manager in, even until summer. What a shame Paul Jewell hadn't held on until summer, his team tactics looked vastly superior to ours. Even his team's time-wasting antics were bizarrely, very well done. This scenario we find ourselves in with the intransigent megalomaniac ' BIG SAM 'reminds me of the movie Platoon, where ' rich college boy ' Charlie Sheen, on realizing just how dangerous the jungle in the Vietnam war was, for which he'd ' volunteered ', said in a letter home, '' Grandma, I think I've made a big mistake.''

Right- Lets hoy the statistics in the green alcohol bin that this week, we will all put out for the bin men, because lets face it, if it’s anything like mine, it will be full, but full of empty, wasted, and hollow contents, and that’s exactly how to sum up the Newcastle side against Derby.

A side that is filled with players, the calibre of Viduka, Martins, Milner, N’Zogbia, Barton, Emre, Butt etc compared with the contents of my green bottle bin, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon, Chenin blanc and Pinot Noir, the Newcastle United playing staff can’t seem to raise their style to the zip or full bodied flavour of the liquid, alcoholic counterparts.

Much like Allardyce has stated "The conversion of chances rate today - again like against Birmingham - is way down compared to what we are creating’ well this is all well and good as a soundbite, but if you watched the game, you will have seen mismatched players, stuck across the pitch in a formation that no-body seems to have a clue what it is or what the hell it’s supposed to be doing.

With rational explanation, this match was highly expected, yet still annoying all the same, the faults many, the positives, short and still unfulfilling, but overall, the whole structure of tactics are completely back side forward and with no purpose as to winning the game from the ordinary fans point of view.

The end result, is simple, Players out of Position Part XII, with yet another dose of pointless long ball umpf, and no actual football on display, other than the opposition in parts passing the ball through us to the point of home supporter distraction and annoyance and the only surprise, the fact that at 2-1 in Derbys favour, the home side actual produced a moment that gained no respect from me or countless Newcastle fans who are growing increasingly impatient with this increasingly limited regime.

Merry Christmas everyone but all the same- Humbug!!!

Paul.

So far....thanks Freddie for your very early, and last, X-Mas present to us - can we get a refund or is there an exchange card?!!!

We drew at home to an awful side doomed for relegation who have now twice looked decent against us. Four of their seven points have come from Newcastle United - how utterly embarrassing is that!!! If this latest debacle doesn't kick the alarm bells into a festive frenzy, I don't know what will.

I am simply amazed we are ninth (and have collected 26) with all that's gone on so far this term - I, along with many, many other despondent supporters, have had enough of rehashing the woes.

This is Newcastle United where the unbelievable is so painfully believable over and over again.... but ....playing (on an absolutely persistent basis) Zog at left-back, Milner on the left, Smith in midfield, and Martins on the right is just FARCICAL!!!!!!!! Add to that the simply FARCICAL defensive incompetence that has been plaguing us for YEARS!!!!
Allardyce and his staff bear overwhelming responsibility for this season. Simply put, he is butchering a potentially very useful and exciting squad with his farcical antics.

Luke - I keep asking but any word/thoughts on the Enrique situation?? Surely this has to be a major concern. The kid's not even being given a chance to prove either that he is a good left-back (which would be nothing short of bloody amazing for us)or he is rubbish and worthy of joining the humiliatingly long list of horrible transfers for Newcastle United.

Bah humbug indeed.

Sunday's performance was absolutely dreadful. The only positives I can think of were Duff's return and Viduka's goals.

On the topic of Viduka, I urge everyone to watch this youtube video:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=s4cieZG7IwA

Being able to think of this video after he scored was probably the only time I cracked a smile during that crap on the pitch.

Viduka summed it up when he said that the game was a draw which felt like a defeat. Since the game was over by midday in the states, my entire day was ruined. I'm sure my family wondered who Derby was and why I was cursing some guy named "Fat Sam" as I walked dejectedly throughout the house.

Santa if you’re reading this, all I want for Christmas is Alan Smith on the bench and N'Zogbia playing in the right position.

Is that too much to ask?

I'd also like a NUFC jersey, but that won't happen now will it?

Stupid American dollar...

I had the exact same discussion during and after the game about Sam's questionable tactics...again. Smith may play better as a striker than as a midfielder, but he looks scared to shoot. He takes way too many touches and always looks for an alternative, just look at the buildup to our first goal for an example!

And why did Sam reshuffle for the 2nd half? Oba and Milner were fine on the flanks, but then he moved Oba up and Smith into midfield, suddenly we have no right winger and Derby punish us straight off the bat. Deja vu? Sam is not learning his bloody lessons, just play a balanced 4-4-2 with wingers for god sake!

Oh Now I know "Allardyce" is incompetent Allan Smith for captain ? Allardyce is adding to the years of embarrassment we have had to endure since Joe Harvey left. His lack of tactical savvy in a brand of hit n hope football, and his unconvincing team selection and now this. Pay him off and get us a manager who knows and recognises talent, knows how to get the ball down, recognises players with ball control and can deliver us footy we are not embarrassed about

SAM'S QUOTES FROM BOXING DAY

"We're sh*t and we know we are'' sang the travelling 5,000 fans who spent a lot of money being there one day after the most expensive holiday of the year. Vicious, eh Joey? don't think so! That chant has to be the saddest thing I've ever heard in 47 years of supporting this ' sleeping giant.' Even Allardyce has run out of hiding holes as he again sent out Worthington to face the BBC. I've retained a few of his quotes so as to make brief comments on them. Over to you Sam......
"You expect a reaction, and I don't blame the fans.''......Fair enough Sam, so can we slag YOUR performance without being labled, living in the past, or impatient or unreasonable ?,,,,,,,,
"If I was them I would be singing what they sang because we're not good enough.''...We meant you more than the players Sam.
"I'm a top man in my field ( so's Wurzel Gummidge in his field.)and I know it's not good enough, so it doesn't take much for them to work out it's not good enough. They are not daft.''......We're not unreasonable, impatient or living in the past then Sam ?
"The level of form they have dropped to is unacceptable.''......You forgot to mention the level of tactics that you've dropped to Sam.
"Everyone can have an off day, but our off days are really off.''......And too frequent to be ' off days ', would ' off season ' be nearer the mark Sam?
"Right now the only pressure on us is what we are putting on ourselves because we are performing at that level.''.......No Sam, there's more pressure from the paying public, us disgruntled fans, and probably your boss.
"We should be big enough and professional enough to cope with what is thrown our way.''.....Can't argue with that mate.
"We are professional managers and players and we have to perform under pressure, whether it be good, bad or indifferent.''.....It is only bad and indifferent.
"We have to accept that pressure and use it as a positive, not a negative, not shrivel and die.''.....I read that after the last ' vicious ' attack from the ' paying ' public, after the Liverpool debacle, that it had galvanized the team.
"You have to roll your sleeves up, wear your heart on your sleeve and go and fight because that is what gets you out of difficult situations.''......When are we talking about doing that then?
"Then you use the abilities you have, but we can't rely on ability alone to win us matches. You need more than that to win games in this league.''.....Yeah, good management and tactics, and playing round plugs in round holes.

"It was a poor performance - we couldn't cope with Wigan being high-tempo and hard-working.''...Why the bloody hell not? You just said that you're all professionals. What happened to you massive backroom staff with their revolutionary, scientific approach to silly injuries? What happened to Pro-zone and the elongation of players' careers like Gary Speed, could you resurrect Shearer and SuperMac please?
"Some of our players have not lived up to their reputation.''........Neither have you mate.
"The front players have not held the ball up and the creative players have not created. Today the appetite to beat the opposition was not there. I'm not happy to have my future in their hands.''......" I'm not happy to have my season ticket in yours mate. This is beginning to sound like, "I'm not out of step Sar'nt Major, it's all of 'em behind me."
I was going to add some sarcastic diatribe to this wee piece but it speaks for itself Luke, boy is this sad ?

Anyone for Pudding?

Well said that lot, forsooth! it seems that our favourite resident Blogmeister’s Luke, Busker and Paul have taken the words from my mouth, although not all of them, nor in the order I would have chosen, nevertheless there are undeniably some splendid words in there, Well said chaps!

When you listen to a match on the radio many words crop up, for if they didn’t it would be ‘dead air’ and a bit of a waste of time tuning in. One of the words which have been cropping up more than others in conjunction with aforementioned football club was ‘boring’ now that isn’t a good word to have in union… and the sooner we get shot of the renegade adjective following us down the road like a lost puppy the better.

Embarrassing it certainly is, when Ashley (the king of the chavs), has taken it upon himself to lead the singing in the midst of the fans, he was spotted orchestrating chants of ‘we're s***, and we're sick of it’ I mean is this any way for a billionaire megalomaniac madman to behave?

I wonder what Ashley got for Crimmy? What does one buy for a billionaire? How about a black and white top with ‘Kaka’ ‘Terry’ or ‘Ronaldo’ written on the back? I got a sledge several years back, now I’m just waiting for the snow to fall…and to have the courage to use it, but at present it’s just so much rusty metalwork in the garage next to the cauldron and the small lump of pure evil in the broken microwave.

This Newcastle fan, hasn’t accepted that the Keegan brand of football isn’t going to return, hurry on sundown, let’s see what tomorrow brings.

The news about Barton just sums up NUFC. SA should carry the can for bringing the guy to the club in the first place. Not only is he liability off the pitch he is a very ordinary player. I think Chris Mort is a decent guy and he should get rid of both of them and give us back our pride in NUFC. I did want to give SA time but I see no improvement, compare his impact to the effect SBR had on the club. Also can someone ask Chris Waddle on Radio 5 to shut up about giving managers time. He should remember what Jack Charlton did to him at NUFC and that he jumped ship to Spurs! The years since SBR was sacked - hang your head in shame Freddie - have been dreadful. I'm sure Shearer will be involved in what happens next. It is a shame we missed out on some good managers last year - why not Capello? too late now. Isn't the special one not in employment? A bit of pie in the sky I guess so it will have to be AS to the rescue. Dream ticket of KK director of football, AS manager, plus Rob Lee and Gary Speed on the coaching staff - we must get rid of Pearson.

I admire Alan Shearer as a player and as a man,but I am afraid thro no fault of his own he is casting a dark shadow over the position of Newcastle's manager.I dont think he is going to go away-after all why should he -he's 'just' a local man living a relatively quiet and unostentatious life. But I think the only way that the current situation is going to be exorcised is for him to be involved in some way in the new set up.Then he will either succeed and the legend will live on (and I hope it will) or he will fail and the whole shebang will be sorted once and for all.

Wow! like everybody else I've been overtaken by events there, haventI!But I think my comment still stands and a Keegan/Shearer combo could be very effective with Shearers hardness and pragmatism providing an edge to Kev's charisma.

Note From Luke
Judging by Alan's comments, it's a definite possibility Bill.
