My Newcastle Transfer List

Posted by Luke on April 29, 2008 12:57 PM |

According to Kevin Keegan he already has a list of potential transfer targets for the summer. However, Director of something or other at St James’s Park Dennis Wise has another list of possible recruits.

As I’m feeling a little left out I thought it was only right that I also made a list and we’ll see how many of them are linked with a move to Newcastle in the next few weeks.

Top of my shopping list is Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov. He is almost certainly going to leave Tottenham at the end of the season and, with Mark Viduka’s poor fitness record, Keegan needs to have four strikers if he is going to persist with a three-man front line.

I suppose Alan Smith could act as cover, but I’d be tempted to sell him, firstly because I don’t think he is very good and secondly because he only came to Newcastle when he was sick of sitting on the bench at Manchester United. Keegan also has Andy Carroll’s development to consider.

I know Berbatov is a sulky so and so, but the same has been said about Viduka in the past and look how he has responded to Keegan’s man management. Berbatov is a quality goalscorer, but he is also an excellent link up player, which would be good news for Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins.

I’d also raid Tottenham for Aaron Lennon. The kid has lost his way a little bit in the last two years, but he remains an exciting wide player and he will bring some much needed pace to the side. It’s easy to forget that, after the World Cup in Germany in 2006, Lennon was widely regarded as one of the most exciting young players in Europe and for good reason.

A new challenge would do him the world of good and an attacking player like him is bound to enjoy working with a manager like Keegan who will give him the freedom to express himself.

At left-back, I can’t look any further than Chelsea’s Wayne Bridge. Newcastle have been linked with an interest in him for the past two summers, but I suspect his patience has finally snapped at Stamford Bridge, where he has to play second-fiddle to Ashley Cole the whole time.

At 27, Bridge needs to be playing first team football each week and United will be able to offer him the sort of lucrative wage packet to persuade anyone to more North. I’ve always liked Bridge, even though he has had his critics in recent times. He is solid at the back and good going forward, exactly the sort of full back Keegan likes.

In midfield, what are the odds on Keegan trying to lure Michael Carrick back to his native North-East. It is a move which is probably destined to fail, as he is still very much involved at Old Trafford, but perhaps we’ll be lucky and he’ll be punished for that costly handball against Chelsea last weekend.

It is a slim chance, I know, but it would be a fantastic signing. Nicky Butt isn’t getting any younger and Carrick would be perfect in that holding role. His passing range is also far superior to Butt’s.

I still think Newcastle need another midfielder, but I’m a little stuck here. I think Emre will probably stay, although expect plenty of speculation about his future, particularly if he has a good Euro 2008 tournament with Turkey, but that still isn’t enough for me.

I’ve talked about Jimmy Bullard before and he’d offer good value for money, especially if Fulham go down and have to get rid of their top earners. But what about someone like Sebastian Larsson at Birmingham City? Young, decent shot, good passing ability and plenty of energy.

Either that, or Keegan will go into the foreign market, probably after he has scouted a few players at the European Championships. As Charles N’Zogbia’s head still appears to be wedged between his cheeks he will be sent packing, so a wide left player might be an attractive proposition. I just can’t think who. Any ideas?

Keegan will also look to sign two new centre-backs. Richard Dunne is an interesting one as he has rid himself of the donkey tag that plagued him in his early days in the same way that Tony Adams did. And we all know what a fantastic defender Adams became.

Dunne may well want to leave Manchester City in the summer as well because, as I understand it, a lot of the City players are far from happy at Eastlands because of the poor treatment shown to Sven Goran Eriksson. If Keegan was looking for a young defender with plenty of potential, he might also want to consider a bid for Dunne’s City teammate, the England Under-21 international Nedum Onuoha.

A former Sam Allardyce target is also available, Tal Ben Haim. The Israeli centre-half was a good player at Bolton and, unlike the foreign defenders who flooded in last summer, has plenty of Premier League experience to bring to the table.

I've gone for British-based players here, mainly because I don't know enough about any possible foreign targets. That may well change after Euro 2008, but for now I'll go with what I know.

I’m sure you will all have your own thoughts on who should come and go at Newcastle this summer, but let me know your thoughts.

I think we will have big problems in the transfer market mainly because we don't have people with the right negotiation skills and experience.

Woodgate and now Modric have gone to Spurs. Spurs not a top-4 team and not historically a high salary club. I reckon both players would have joined nufc if the deal was right.

So how many more players of this calibre will become available during the summer (who aren't grabbed by Champions League teams)? Maybe Wise & Co. are trying to impress the chairman with how smart they are. This will fail because it's a sellers market not a buyers market. They will probably panic in August and we will pay top dollar for an average player (Luque) who has no time for pre-season training and so will be a failure next season. Just wait for KK to get frustrated.

Note From Luke
I understand what you're saying Sam, but it's a bit early to start worrying about frustration setting in. I just hope Keegan has some targets already lined up and can move for them before the start of Euro 2008. As for Modric, does anyone remember Sivio Maric? Might not be such a bad transfer to miss out on!

U talked about the left hand side of the mid field.

U only need to note that there are very few left sided players world wide and that always brings an inbalance in an attacking side like NUFC.

Probably Duff has to improve immediately for us to be okay.

He has potential but we are unlucky eating from Chelsea's dustbin.

Note From Luke
The problem is, the scraps from Chelsea's dustbin tend to be better than what is offer from elsewhere. I'm afraid Newcastle will get what they can when they can for the time being.

I think you nailed it with this selection. I have doubts, though, about Ben Haim, but Dunne is solid game after game. Bullard and Bridges would be ideal, of course, and I could see Jimmy B. becoming a folk hero on Tyneside. As for Berbatov, I doubt very much that he would go north. I think he feels Real Madrid or Barcelona deserve his talents more. But great list. Hope KK reads your thoughts.

Note From Luke
Yes, I might have been a little too ambitious with Berbatov but as KK would say, why not think big.

Paul Patterson wrote...

Ah so it’s that time of year again is it? Transfer speculation time.

Like ripples on a still pond, one slowly nuzzles the other into submission, then slows down as it moves off and does the same to another.

So too does the transfer market- when one players name has been widely shouted down, another gets bandied about by various hacks, until the same happens by the manager, sick and tired by August, of the constant speculation of which ripple will finally hit the rock that is Newcastle United and stop the tide.

Now that I’m finished talking aquatics, it’s time for me to worry about Luke, our journalistic friend,- Now as I respect your opinion, I’ll be polite- Michael Carrick?

Surely not- now- he gets away with it in Manchester United’s side, but in £34m spent on he and Owen Hargreaves (£17m) combined, you surely must have the most overpriced midfield ever put together. I would have buckled if you asked £17m (Carricks fee also) for the two of them.

I’ve been a longstanding admirer of Sportings, Moutinho and wouldn’t hesitate to throw £17m at him although he might be cheaper, I liken him to a Portuguese Paul Scholes or the player Emre should have been.

The left hand side is problematic but a simple one to solve- Kevin Keegan always picked players up last time, who had problems at their clubs (Remember Ginola giving away the ball for PSG- their fans never forgave him and he had to be sold- we gained from that)

Well the man I propose we gain from his problems currently, is none other than John Arne Risse. I’ve been shot down by various people saying he’s not good enough but I’m standing firm on this one, he’s WAY, WAY better than Wayne Bridge and even Ashley Cole, he’d provide great cover or even beat Jose Enrique, who’s great, but just a young prospect, giving him the time to develop. He could also play left side of midfield.

Failing that, if we really want to bust the bank and buy Risse for left back AND get a left winger- then another player who people might question me mentioning, is Stewart Downing, he’s wasted at Boro’ and is a far better player than he’s showing- Kevin could get the best out of him and really P**s the unclean off in the process.

So that’s the left back, left wing and centre midfield sorted, I agree with Lennon for the Right wing as a second James Milner, so how about the forward line? I’d like to get someone who’s maybe 22 and has another decade ahead of him, now again, I’ll get shouted down, as he’s not a glamorous name, he’s at a VERY unfashionable club, but Readings Leroy Lita had a great season last year, he’d be a gamble for £4-5m, but one for me worth taking, he’s strong, pacy and can score with any part of his anatomy.

Failing that, an easy option would be Milan Baros, he’s only on loan at Portsmouth till the summer, maybe a deal could be hi-jacked there? After that it’s risky continental imports, untried in the Premier League to go at.

Finally (Phew!) the troublesome Centre of Defence, again I may get shot down, but I don’t think it needs major surgery, maybe just some experience and/or cover. Aaron Hughes would be a virtual freebee and he can play anywhere- I’m not that convinced about Richard Dunne as he would get stripped for pace often- if we could tempt Micah Richards then you’d be talking.

Summing up:

Moutinho- £12m+
John Arne Risse- £8m
Stewart Downing- £12m
Leroy Lita- £5m
Aaron Lennon- £5m
Aaron Hughes- £1.5m
Richard Dunne- £3m but I’d prefer Micah Richards- £14m
Paul Patterson- Shot down many times

Ok it’s a lot, (£57m) but we need a lot and the board and manager have said they are ambitious?

Like ripples on a still pond. . .

Note From Luke
I've said before that I'd like to see Aaron Hughes return as a utility defender. Leroy Lita is an interesting one. Big things were expected of him, but he has lost his way and has been farmed out on loan by Reading. Riise would be a good buy as well, but Downing?! You talk of over-rated players well he just about sums it up. I've never seen him have a good game for Boro and it's laughable he's in the England squad. No pace and no tricks, he never beats a top full-back and his crossing isn't all that accurate, even if he gets the space to pick his spot. No thank you Paul, he can stay in Smoggieland.

Paul.

I would suggest Santa Cruz over Berbatov. Hes a great finisher, a good arcitect and would cost less than half what spurs would want for Berbatov. As for the problem at the left side of midfield, look no further than Downing. I personaly think he has got one of the best left foot in the premier league. His crossing is also top draw. But it would take a lot of cash to persuade boro to sell him though. Another good enough short term solution would be Malbranque. Another player i would love to see in the black and white is Bentley. Hes top class.

Lets hope things are really going to happen this summer. But first, let show the world that we are up for it next season by beating Chelsea. HOWAY THE LADS!!!

Note From Luke
Bentley is a good shout, but I've just explained my reasons for not wanting Downing on Paul previous comment.

Malcolm wrote...

I don't think we should go for bridge as enrique is developing into a very good full back. Having said that we do need cover for that position - perhaps a central defender who can also play full back. I have no idea where you get someone like that who will be good enough - but that's what Denis and his assistants are being paid for.
As for berbatrov - dream on.

Note From Luke
We can all dream Malcolm! Whatever happens, Keegan will sign another left-back, he's already said so, because he only has Enrique who can play in that position since N'Zogbia lost the plot. Bridge or Riise would be good purchases, although I would fully expect Enrique to get his fair share of first team football to help in his development.

Sy wrote...

My favourite annual topic...and I can't disagree with most of your list, Luke. I also wholeheartedly agree with your opinion of Downing and would be completely underwhelmed and disappointed if this is the extent of our summer ambitions.

While I've been keen to see Bridge arrive since we were first linked with him, I'm now slightly turned around on the subject purely and simply because I think Jose Enrique's development will go to the next level if given the number one spot next season. While I understand the need for cover, I see us as needing someone who is just that - cover. Jose's improvement since Keegan returned has been hugely impressive for a 22 year old in a new country, given the total lack of confidence shown him by Allardyce. It's a catch-22 though, I admit, as Bridge would be a great addition to the squad, and I'd prefer him to Riise.

The rumour of Rangers's interest in Alan Smith was pleasing this morning, and I'd be very keen to see this become reality. By all accounts this would seem to suit all parties, as I simply can't see him making even 10 appearances next term. He'll get a regular game and we'll get him off the wage bill. The part-ex link with Cuellar would also be worth looking seriously at.

Let's not forget about the loan market either though. KK says we can't compete with the big boys for players, which is fair enough. But maybe some of Europe's big guns would listen to loan approaches for their starlets? I would've suggested Bojan at Barca earlier in the year, but it now looks like he'll feature prominently for them next year. Maybe Geovani instead?

It'll be very worthwhile to keep an eye on Eastlands for the next few months also following the Ericsson stories this morning. I'd be most interested in Richards, although agree with the Onuoha idea too. I get the impression the Dunne deal is a 90% certainty.

Not wanting to focus attention elsewhere, but I can't help noticing that Erickson's job is in serious question and Phil Scolari installed as favourite only a couple of weeks since talks alledgedly started with Ronaldinho's agent...interesting.

But to finish at St. James's, Luke, I'm still hoping for the explosive, marquee signing promised when Ashley took over. And although it may be my heart talking rather than my head, what price the aforementioned Brazilian ending up on our left side next year?

Note From Luke
It's certainly the time for Ashley to put his money where is dodgy dance moves are!

I think talk of signing Berbatov is 'pie in the sky' unless the so called top 4 don't want him and then he'd have the choice of either staying where he is or signing for one of the Premiership 'also ran's' of which we are one. Personally, I think he'll opt to stay where he is. A better bet might be a move to take Kenwood Mixer from the Mackems! Everyone knows that he's just using them as a stepping stone towards a move to a bigger club. Jimmy Bullard for me would be an excellent signing in midfield & Roma's French central defender Philippe Mexes would be would be a coup but I suspect lack of European football would frustrate us there. I'd also prefer John Arne Riise from Liverpool than another sick note like Bridge. And here's some controversy. What about selling both Shay Given and Steve Harper & buying Carlo Cudicini from Chelsea?

Note From Luke
Well you've thrown a hand grenade in there at the end haven't you. I think it would be follish to sell either Harper or Given, but if one of them was to leave, Cudicini would be the obvious replacement.

Has nobody who supports Newcastle learned anything from past experience? Sure Toon can try for players like Dimitar Berbatov plus an A to Z of other top players, but get serious! Currently Toon have nothing to offer to genuine stars. The best bet is to try and pick up good young players for 2 or 3 years from now and to not have silly expectations for next season. It is not just that Toon are a bottom half team (probably will finish 13th or 14th) but also KK has never actually achieved any real success as a manager. The alternative to being realistic is more overpaid boozers and brawlers who will never be quite good enough, like Shearer post Blackburn. No wonder people in the south talk about Toon Loonys.

Note From Luke
Now I suspect you are just trying to be provocative here. But, hey, go ahead, what's the point of a blog if you can't stir the pot a little here and there.

Mike Fraser wrote...

Hi Luke

I like all of your selections although would prefer Riise over Bridges because he offers more attacking options with his long throws and incredible left foot shot.

I cant see Smith staying because he isnt good enough to displace the current players either in midfield or attack.

Geremi would be another to let go or perhaps play off the bench.

So Lennon would be good perhaps a swap for Zog although Modric may have made that unlikely.

Carrick would be terrific to replace Butt but I cannot see Man Utd letting him go nor us paying the type of money he signed for.

Bullard I could see us getting, he would be a much better option for me than Barton - Scott Parker looked really good last Saturday compared to JB.

Dunne - OK and Hughes definately but I would prefer Tal Ben Haim as a proven performer and we could get him.

Havent seen enough of Larsson nor Onuoha to have a view.

So for my preference in order of priority

Bullard
Lennon
Riise
Tal Ben Haim

And I would love it if we got Berbatov and Carrick but cant see it happening but as you say its good to dream!

Leaving hopefully for some money

Smith
Gerami
Carr

Still hoping we will get to see the best of Emre but maybe thats dreaming as well

Cheers

Mike
Note From Luke
I'd gladly help Stephen Carr pack his bags Mike. I think some of my selections are a tad realistic and it is interesting to see Newcastle have been linked with Aidean McGeady this morning as he probably falls into the more realistic category.

Charles wrote...

Well, transfer speculations already? The season isnt even over yet but of course if you're Newcastle, you got to start early, I suppose...

Modric can go to Spurs for all I care. If he rather rot at Spurs till his time comes then by all means, please do. We need players who WANT to play for Newcastle, not those who came for the money then leave and sulk about Newcastle's nightlife. (Remember Titus, we are looking at you...) But of course, good luck to him. It isnt about Spurs' status that attracted him, its the european football that brought him to Spurs anyway...

As for my transfer list, agreed that Berbatov is a good signing but what will it take to bring him here? If Martins wasnt holding the number 9th shirt then maybe Berbatov will be tempted to come (He's an Alan Shearer fan). Good passing, skill and a way for goal...most of all, he can cover up for the always-injured strikers we got.

Wayne Bridge and Risse just about have the same score to me but I'd fancy Risse as he is an attacking natural, something KK should be notified. Risse can score long shots that maybe crucial in some games where Owen get stranded up front. Whatever the choice, Ashley Cole is a no-no! We'd be sucking eggs if he comes, the irony would be like a flea inside your ear, irritating and stupid.

Richard Dunne have a good record but will he come? Maybe he'll forget that Joey is here too. Heard he got a spat with him...Richards is definitely out of our reach, thank you...

As for left-wing, Lennon would be perfect. Maybe with Modric there, Lennon would feel left out. At least that backstabbing, two-timing croatian CAN help us after all...We can tempt Spurs even more by swapping Zog, sure enough we provide him with an inattentive and uninspired lefty but who cares?

Alan Smith going...good luck. Carr going...good riddance. Zog going...well we warn you.

Bentley would be a good buy if Lennon refuses. Milner and Bentley are natural right wingers but they can also operate as well on the left. Can see a good combination out of this...Also, Bentley could provide Milner a little good clean competition for right spot. They'd show more flair if given that they need to fight for the spot.

Another good buy maybe Ashton. He's good with the ball, can physical in approach. He MIGHT have a horrendous record of injuries but look, he's going to cover for Mark and isnt every Newcastle United players injury prone? Need I remind you we are no longer in the Roeder age...

So, conclusion...

Ashton - maybe around 8 million
Lennon - Swap with Zog, could offer another 1.5 million extra
Bentley - 14 miilion
Risse - 5 million
Dunne - ??? Never knew how much he'd cost but I'd say around 5 million
Barbatov - 20-25 million + support of fans

Well, that's about 58.5 million the most...minus 4+5+??? million if we sold A.Smith, Ameobi, etc,etc...

Note From Luke
Ashton is another interesting possiblity. i like him, but as you say, he's injury record is terrible. Then again, if he's competing with Viduka, hopefully they will cover for each others time in the treatment room.

JC wrote...

Oh the great summer debate! What we need is simple and I think it also depends on who leaves. My theory is that Smith will go, as will Milner (controversial), N'Zogbia and possibly Owen as I'm not convinced he will re-sign.
The requirements in defence are obvious, we've been linked with Riise and Dunne and I agree they'd be good signings. For the midfield am I the only one who would like to see Shaun Wright-Phillips?? Aside from him I feel a creative midfielder is a necessity, here the option for me is Moutinho, I'd love Gattuso as replacement for Butt. Gattuso's wife is from Glasgow and it's long been mooted he'd love to play in premiership. In attack, lets be bold and go for Huntelaar from Ajax! As for some young additions, Vokes, Giles Barnes and I agree Leroy Lita! So in summary;
IN:
Dunne £5m
Riise £6m
Moutinho £15m
Gattuso £8m
SWP £8m
Barnes £2m
Huntelaar £18m
Lita £4m
Vokes £250k

OUT:
Smith £5m
Owen £9m
Milner £8m
N'Zogbia £7m

Total outlay : £66,250,000
Total Income : £29,000,000
Net Spend : £37,250,000

Note From Luke
I reckon Ashley and Mort will be happy with the figures JC. I'd like Huntelaar and Gattuso is an interesting one. Yeah, come to think of it, that's a pretty good list although you've missed off Bullard who I still think will offer great value for money in the summer.

Well thought out Luke. The problem we up North have, is that the foreigners want to live in London, its the be all and end all as far as they are concerned. Berbatov, Im not sure about, he says his all time hero is Alan Shearer, but everytime I see the Bulgarian he is walking round with a face like a smacked backside, reminds me a bit of Anelka. Lennon I like a lot, also Bridge, going on what Liverpool fans say about Riise, pre last weekend they think he is a dead loss. Cant remember the name of that Man City defender who is in the England squad (my age I guess) but it might be worth having a pop for him.

Note From Luke
Micah Richards, although Onouhu would be a more likely target as he's not certain of a first team place at Eastlands.

Keegan said he wants fans to dream, so here's who we should sign/sell. These are based on sticking with the 4-3-3 formation Keegan has been using.

Replace Viduka and Smith with Henry and Berbatov (to play alongside Owen, with Martins as super sub).

Gareth Barry and Owen Hargreaves to come in and play either side of Nicky Butt in midfield.

As for defence, I really like our full-backs so would just look for some young prospects as cover, and just add someone like Richard Dunne at centre-back.

And keep Harper as number 1, flog Given if anyone is silly enough to bid a lot for him.

As for the leavers, it looks as though Zog will leave, hopefully Shola will, I mentioned Duke and Smith, keep Barton Emre and Geremi as competition for midfield 3, put Duff and Milner in the reserves until they learn how to cross a ball, and get rid of 2 from Diatta, Cacapa and Rozenhal.

If we're gonna play 4-4-2, then only get one of Henry/Berbatov, get Krancjar and Bentley for the wings and get rid of Barton.

This management game is EASY!

Think it's time to pinch yourself Steve!

Fantastic list you've got luke. I dont think many would be too far off. Wayne certainly a very good call, one of the best british defenders who is not playing first team football. Would be a cracking signing to see him here.

Berbatov used to be a newcastle fan, specifically when Shearer was around. If we can lure you him, that would be great. World class player, with excellent technique on the ball. Will only help both Martins and Owen.

As you mentioned, alot of city players are unhappy. They have quite a few quality players to be honest, and KK has worked with a few during his time as well. Hopefully we can bring a few city players over.

Certainly require a creative midfielder. Not sure if Sidwell would be a good call. Been out of first team action for far too long.

Also, we are linked with the new drogba in Gomis.

Note From Luke
Gomis, hmmm, haven't seen much of him but Wise/Jimenez/Keegan may well have. Sidwell, had forgotten about him, but as I keep saying, I'd prefer Bullard. Talking of City, what about Elano?

I can't believe the names being suggested.... No better than what we have.

I have been 'fortunate' to have Freeview and watch Rangers in UEFA Cup and have been most impressed by Carlos Cuellar. I also think Kris Boyd may be the new Viduka; fat, but scores lots of goals. He's younger, fitter and quicker than Skippy too.
I don't really rate Bridge. He always looks the weak link in Chelsea's team. I think Julio Geordio, given time to settle, will be a good asset. We do need cover though.
I see us trying to get some youngsters in as well. The likes of Sam Vokes and Aaron Ramsey.
I like the sound of Aaron Lennon but I would prefer Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St. Petersburg. Such a good player and a fab name!!

KK says 4 players. Cuellar, Arshavin, perhaps Kerzhakov and A. N. Other, although claims that they're lining up a £10 million bid for Luke Edwards has still to be confirmed!

Note From Luke
I think the fee discussed between KK and my agent was £10 and a packet of peanuts.

Also like to see us make a bid for the Liverpool winger, Pennant rather than Lennon. Jamie Bullock if Fulham go down would be a good buy, if we are keeping Obe Martins then I would ask King Kev to look at twinning with some of his Nigerian team-mates ie.
Peter Odemwingie (Lokomotiv Moscow)who is a probably as quick as Obe and closer to home Kayode Odejayi (Barnsley), who performed well in the FACup. Hugo Miguel Ferreira Viana and Albert Lucky Luque should be enough warning of looking at European imports.

When Shearer was approaching retirement I dearly hoped we'd get the mercurial paddy in as he was having problems with Spurs then. Now though, with the advent of Berba leaving and Keane being a well established crowd favourite, eufa cup etc., it might be impossible. Aaron Hughes was almost as bad a mistake as Nobby going to Villa in my book, why the hell was he sold anyway? I can't remember him having a bad game, never mind enough to sell him and I'd like him back. He looked a good player last time against us and is exactly what Kev is looking for in that he knows the Premiership inside out, I don't think he gets injured much too. Otherwise you and Paul between you, have pretty much nailed the possibilities unless they unearth a new Andy Cole, Rob Lee or Beardsly i.e. previously unknown geniuses/genii/deed gud players. Have you been away AGAIN Luke?

Unless you count a few days at the Riverside watching cricket no I've just been keeping a low profile!

City has lots of flair player. If KK doesnt go for at least a couple i would be surprise, especially if the situation in City remains.

Petrov is one player i like alot. He is very quick, very good on the ball and his left foot is second to none in the league. Micheal Johnson is a good talented midfield who is still learning his game, 20 or 21 i think? He can defend and attack well. I think KK should take a close look at him especially since we'll be interested in talented youngsters, he is certainly proving to be one.

I actually feel that the city team has so much talent, with a few tweaks, they could have a fantastic season ahead, unfortunately things turned for the worse, i hope we make the best of this opportunity.

Note From Luke
Football is a ruthless business so yes Newcastle should try and seek any advantage they can get. Petrov is a good player actually and, perhaps more importantly, he is Keegan's type of player.

My summing up(for what it's worth),
Berbatov-Surly,moody,but scores some great goals and provides some great link up play, and, according to his mam,
covets a Toon shirt with no.nine on it.
A tick there.
The same for Lennon,as far as the tick is concerned,he'd surely benefit from a different stage to perform on,and, would,I believe find a resurgance in his form.
Wayne Bridge is a player I've always
admired,so although a tick is in order,
I somehow can't see him going north of Watford, except on a Chelski coach(do they still travel by coach from the wilds of West London by the way). The Avram Grant situation, once it has been sorted one way or another might clarify that.
I've watched Michael Carrick grow in confidence and stature lately over the last three months in a red shirt, and given that sort of form would love to see him in a black and white one.For the same reason, there's a certain Fergy, who would like to keep him in that same red jersey.Last night against Barca he was just spot on.
Roy Bentley would be my choice if we couldn't get Carrick,he gets stuck in,can grab a game by the throat, has a terrific shot and would be a real asset to our team.
Richard Dunne has also improved his stock over the last year or so,and with the unrest going on at Eastlands,it might be a good time to raid the blue bit of Manchester,I'm still on the fence when it comes to Micah Richards for some reason, probably because I find him too impetuous and prone to leave too many gaps behind him;get the right man alongside him though and he can certainly swing play.
Aaron Hughes,I would have back no problem, but Risse,I'm not so sure, and
I'm not saying that because of his slip up against Chelsea.
I agree with you entirely about Downing
Luke, could never understand how he kept the England shirt after his mentor left.
The only other one that I would love to see in a Mags strip is Robbie Keane.
Discuss!

Note From Luke
I fear Robbie Keane is even less likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur than Berbatov but he'd be a good foil to Owen and Martins.

hi luke,

not a bad list, i'd be more than happy with that if we were lining up with them come august.

starting off the keepers need left alone, provided no leaves, happy as they are.

what about nicky shorey from reading, still don't think he's signed a new contract, fairly steady, and coming from a club like reading may be less inclined to kick off, should enrique keep him out the team for awhile, which possibly could upset a riise/bridge.

dunne seems a decent signing but hardly gets the pulses racing, throw in richards and then that would be a statement signing, cn play rb & cb equally well, and would certainly raise the standards of our defence, i agree about aaron hughes, good squad player, never let us down, can cover many positions and wouldn't cost a bomb in fee/wages.

looking at the midfield really depends who leaves. bentley would be class but if n'zog went, then lennon would be good. meaning milner can cover both left and right, also with emre covering left (should he not leave). they're obviously looking to bring someone in midfield with a bit flair after the modric debacle, moutinho looks good and the right age, personally if we could get a van der vaart that would be perfect, unlikely though, but hopefully someone of that ilk.

finally the strikers, i feel we're looking good but viduka does that every year, misses half the season and performs towards the end, everyone starts sayin if next year he can start and finsih like that...then starts the cycle again. we're getting linked t this gomis again, never seen him play so got no opinion except alot of money. over here what about bendtner?, fell out abit with adebayor and may soon get peeved with playin second fiddle to him, seems strong and decent link up play?

on the whole there's some decent players in the squad, but need 4 or 5 'blue chip' players that will give a strong spine to the team, time will tell if we get it....

Note From Luke
Can't see Bendtner leaving Arsenal unfortunately but might be worth a go I guess. Agree with you about Viduka, he'll miss as many games as he plays again next season so they've got to think of signing someone else who can play in that position.

A.McGeady (10M>Can't choose Mackems!)
D.Ashton (6M + N'Zogbia?)
J.Bullard (Relegation release)

If Bids for Bridge+ Ashton fail, then maybe L.Baines and B.Gomis could prove attractive, youthful options. (Gomis clips on Youtube are impressive-Aged 22)

Ronnie- The new Andy Cole could be Leroy Lita?

He would certainly slip well below the radar of many clubs, but he may be a target of a club the level of Sunderland and Boro.

I really hope not as he looks a good kid and needs a top team to play for- he’s out of favour at Reading as well.

Peter Crouch is a hell of an ugly player, not just in features, but he’s gangly and effective, imagine him with Owen, it would be reminiscing of Keegan and Toshack at Liverpool- I’d move heaven and earth.

On the subject of Crouch’s private life- Luke- your soon to be a married man aren’t you? I don’t think the ‘wife’ would be too pleased you eying up Peter Crouch’s ‘twin strikers’

Still. . . Phwoar!!

Paul.

I've got to say I disagree with many of the targets you have outlined. First of all, I feel there is no way Berbatov would sign for us, and as you say, Carrick.

Lennon is a player who while pacey, seldom looks up before delivery. I believe for the money, we could find better out there.

I would love to see Bridge and Dunne in black and white, but would not want Tal Ben Haim. He's been found out recently for Chelsea and is not strong enough to cope with the amount of pressure we would be inviting with a 4-3-3 formation. (Which I quite like).

As for my thoughts, how about Zarate, expensive maybe, one we could groom in a Keegan fashion, certainly. I could see Ashton doing a job as well.

I believe the signing of the summer to excite the fans though, has already passed.

Note From Luke
I'm really not too bothered about missing out on Modric. As I've already mentioned, Silvio Maric was supposed to be one of the most creative midfielders in Europe and was a disaster, as was Hugo Viana when he moved to SJP. It is not certain he will settle in English football as it tends to be the creative players who struggle the most with the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

Hey Luke -- I know I'll get a few poo-poo's but we're all entitled to our little say. I notice all of your suggestions and responses relate to either established Premier players or overseas players. What about the championship - after all 3 of the 4 teams in this years FA Cup Semis were C'Ship teams -- they can't be that bad can they? Didn't Everton get Lescott and Cahill from Wolves and Millwall? Where did the mackems get Kenwyne Jones from? I've watched Zoltan Gera from WBA for a number of years now and although we'll see him in the Premier League next year I think he would be worth a punt -- good crosser, good passer and he scores as well. I also like the look of young Morrison (also WBA) very pacy and an eye for goal. I'm not saying fill the team with C'Ship players but I'm sure there are one or two good one's about who could make it under KK.

Note From Luke
A very good point Rob. Gera has always caught my eye as well. Might be worth a punt. The problem, as ever, is that WBA would want a small fortune for him.

Still, it's fun to dream. Gattuso would be nice. And Sergio Aguerro from Atletico Madrid. If someone could lure Paolo Maldini to the Centre For Life do you think we could clone him?

Anyhoo, hopefully the days of Luque, Marcelinho, Boumsong etc. are over and done with.

What a ridiculous set of player you all seem to want. Can I respectfully remind you that NUFC are not a big club (by that I mean they have not finished well this season, and are not in Europe), so why on earth would the like of Berbatov, Bentley, Lennon etc etc come. Also, less we forget the geographical position which is stupidly still a turn off for player. I hate to say this but to only 'big names' that ever come to the North East are those looking for some easy money, and that won't change in a hurry.

My conclusion, same old Newcastle, always dreaming...

Crouch would be a good buy, can score goals but other than that? How about buying Hilario and installing him as striker, that should sum up Crouch's value.

Not to insult him but really I expect even Alan Smith to do better than that bean pole. Crouch needs a team which can supply him with a ready round of ammunition, something Newcastle is not too fond off when we're fighting a good team.

And Luke, Ashton is a well known injury risk, but we all know Mark, Emre and Owen isnt shy off that name either. A gamble, which is about 70% success and 30% injured all season...

As with the other comments...
Milner will NEVER leave...
Harper & Given leave? You got a better chance of seeing Milner leave...and
Carrick can suck eggs at ManU...

The truth is, ManU's midfield is as shaky as our defence but always seemed to have the damned luck to win games through goals. Buying any from their midfield would be a fool's gold...

Note From Luke
Erm, that's whay they are in the final of the Champions League and two games away from the title. Not a bad midfield if you ask me! Crouch would be a good buy, he links the play well and he will weigh in with his fair share of goals as well.

I'm only kidding, Luke, but I couldn't resist trying to wind up all those on the "Why do Newcastle think they can attract big players?" bandwagon.

It's true some of the players being bandied about here are entirely unrealistic. For one, David Bentley. Loves Blackburn, but is tempted by the bright lights and big money offered by the top four. We are not in the top four! Keegan has found success when bidding for unhappy players with the skill to succeed at SJP. Berbatov is a longshot, but worth the bid. AC Milan are too old and wants to rebuild, so Gattuso could be on his way out. It may take him some time to get used to the Premiership, though, and you need consistency from the center of midfield (how come Nicky Butt hasn't been called out for his RANK performance against West Ham? Barton took the criticism for being outplayed by Parker in one of the postings. Whhaaat? Butt usually wins the ball all over the pitch, but had his lunch handed to him by Scott Parker, and his passing goes terribly astray when he's pressured).

Anyway, after the what-the-hell bids for Berbatov and Gattuso, let's try for some players who are actually available:

McGeady!
Cuellar
Riise
Mouthino
Hughes
Elano/Petrov/anyone we can nick off citeh

Those players will solidify what has been started at St. James. You know who won't? Jimmy Bullard. What a piece of crap. He shoots whenever he gets the ball, plus I can't see him being an easy player to get along with, always complaining to teammates and referees. That ugly idiot is not worthy of a free transfer.

Note From Luke
And you were doing so well until you slagged off Bullard. I know what you mean about the shooting thing but that can quickly be stamped out once he is told not to by the manager. He is a realistic signing and he is an under-rated talent as far as I'm concerned.

Some interesting comments.

Can't see any of what I call Category 1 players (of which Berbatov is one) coming unless its for the wrong reasons (just the money).

I think to see steady improvement we need to ship out the players who shouldn't get anywhere near the 1st team or don't want to play for us and get in some tried and tested performers who will push us into the top 8 and perhaps a euro place along with some very promising U-21s from around the world. This seems to be the tack that Newcastle are now taking rather than risking big money on Johnny Foreigner like we have in the past.

I'd ship out Diatta, Carr, Cacapa for nowt. Duff & Smith can go too 3mil each if we're very very lucky...The Zog to somewhere in London, be nice if we could get 5mil for him and Ameobi can do the hokey cokey all the way to Stoke as well.
Now for the incomings.

In defence Dunne, Hughes & Shorey as cover for Enrique would do for me. The other two gives us 4 good centre half's with Faye & Taylor.
Midfield, loved the idea someone had of Gatusso..the guy is just a winner plain and simple, Bullard & McGeady give some creativity and flair and here's a surprise for yer.... Park from Man Utd, I've always thought he was an effective player whatever position he plays in seems to be making tackles in his own penalty box and then turning up in the opponents area a few seconds later.

Attackers, Crouch and really the only real gambles as they've lost their way a bit would be Lennon & Lita.
That would give us 10 in and 7 out which doesn't expand the squad greatly but that will hopefully be supplemented by the young'uns we got in January plus some others too which should be allowed to sniff around the 1st team squad.....Phew...finished

Shorey or Bridge at LB, and the young French CB Sakho sounds a great prospect although I've never heard of him until yesterday.

Well Bebatov would be a really really good adition and for those of you who think that's impossible well...just get Keegan AND Shearer to talk to him. Barbie did confess having an Alan Shearer poster on his wall and combined with Keegan's enthusiasm (con skills) and Ashley's pounds who knows.

If not Bebatov what about Van De Vart. Yes almost impossible as lots of big clubs looking at him too. By big clubs i mean european competition. But maybe he might like the weather on Tyneside.

Andy Carroll to be bled slowly into the first team. He'd be the 5th striker.

Midfield
Deco as the player to be the one Emre never turned into. With all the problems Barcelona are having we will probably get a good bid accepted. Question is would he want to come to a club with no european football. Once again KK's negotiating skills will come in handy here.

Another wide player is needed but I honestly have no idea apart from the usual suspects of Lennon and co. I'm feeling KK might go for a player from outside the UK for this one. They are cheaper and might be the Ginola we need.

Defence
I really think we need one almost gonna retire world class defender. The only kind of world class player we can get right now. Even if he only has the legs for one last season. The experience would be really good for Taylor and Edgar and he would help stabilise the back four.

Left back
Leighton Baines is a bit risky but if the price is right why not take a gamble. He would be content with sharing playing time with Enrique who's improving. Enrique good preseason though. Some good old training in the rain and mud and getting a few kicks in the shins to toughen up :) He also has to learn when not to give the ball away. He does it at the most dangerous times.

Goalkeeper
I heard about this guy called Steve Harper who seems to be ok :)

All the above of course changes every 5 seconds in my case but I guess the same goes for most of you.

Note From Luke
I suspect it will keep on changing until the window closes again at the end of August!

Despite Ben being a Mackem he isnt far wrong. With no euro football to offer and no London bright lights the stars will always be difficult to get unless they are past it or over rated i.e. Kliuivert, Viana, Maric
Nonetheless we can all dream and sometimes it comes true which is why the papers can get away with such outrageous rumours.Remember Keegan (the player) Shearer, Owen.
My thinking is that we may concentrate on good proven players that others think about but for some reason fail to make a move for that KKK can turn into top players as he did with Venison Lee Sellars Cole Beresford etc.
For what its worth my thinking working down the team is:Keepers, Sign a temporary 3rd choice man so Krul and Foster can be loaned out for First team experience.
Defence,Lose Carr Cacapa Rosenthal and loan out Edgar and Ramage for first team experience.
Sign Diatta for cover at Right Back/centre Defence(though Aaron Hughes would also be good)Riise or Bridge Left Back.Dunne and Cuellar to centre Defence Squad.
Midfield is tough though sadly i think Zog on his way, like Emre to stay but doubt it,Smith can go,would loan out Lua Lua.
Gattuso would be mint but think someone like Sidwell may be more realistic for deep midfield.
Barnes from Derby would be good cover and Mcgeady an interesting thought for left side competition though would like Petrov.Lennon or Wright Phillips a thought for right sided competition but may be unrealistic as squad players so KKK may need to find a new name to cover right side.
As for the flair man thats really hard, dont know enough about Moutinho but this may be the spot where we get a Big surprise signing. Not sure about Bullard though as a squad man may be ok.
Up front,Ameobi out,Carroll out on loan.
Sign a centre forward as good though Viduka is (and i would keep him)he is injury prone so Ashton or preferably Crouch for me if no surprise signing forthcoming there.Plus a good young player or two like Volkes and Lita (maybe)as cover.Obviously Berbatov would be nice but unlikely.
Just also hope we end this season well with a couple of wins then the speculation fun really starts Ha Ha

The defence really is the tough one..I'd move Carr Rozenhal Cacapa and Diatta on..Richard Dunne would be excellent if he is available but I'd also enquire about young Dawson @ Spurs.

Ideally for next season my team would be..

GK Given (Harper)

RB Beye (Geremi)
LB Riise (Enrique)
CH Dunne (Faye)
CH Taylor (Dawson)

RM Milner
CM Butt (Barton)
CM Diego (Emre)
LM Duff

CF Crouch (Viduka)(Carroll)
CF Keane (Owen)(Martins)

The wide positions remain a problem for me..as it looks like N'Zogbia will go along with Smith and Ameobi.

But KK often springs surprises and I fancy him to spring a few more in the summer and despite not being in europe next season I still think he'll bring in some good qaulity players 4 or 5 of them would do..and I'm extremely confident that we'll have a better season next year and get close to the UEFA cup positions around 5th or 6th.

Note From Luke
Would love to see Diego at SJP as well next season Berty. Fantastic player.

My Personal transfer list - Dunne, Bridge, Malouda, Obi Mikel and Doyle!
Think they'd all do well, given games and mikel and maloudas stock and price will have fallen this year!
