The Hustler

Posted by Luke on July 22, 2008 2:38 PM |

Roy Keane isn't exactly short of a few bob, but Sunderland's manager still turned into debt collector at the team's hotel in Portugal today after hustling some of his players out of their hard earned wedge.

Having sat on the sidelines as his players sweated in the sunshine during their morning training session on Tuesday, Keane challenged his players to a little bet.

Score past him with a shot from the edge of the area and he would pay them, miss the target, or he saved, they lose and cough up to him over lunch.

Perhaps the brave and ambitious among them should have taken note of Dwight Yorke's reluctance to take part in the game. The striker has spent more time with Keane than anyone else in the Black Cats squad and he quickly walked away from his manager's challenge to tuck into some fruit on the sidelines, where he was joined by other sensible lads like Michael Chopra and Nyron Nosworthy.

The rest, though, couldn't wait to take some of Keane's cash and boldly stepped up to the plate. Sadly for them, while Keane may have been a rampaging midfielder at Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, it seems he is also pretty handy between the sticks.

Despite his size, Keane made one magnificent save to keep out Anthony Stokes' top-corner bound drive, while he also made a decent low stop to deny Dean Whitehead, much to his delight.

However, Keane's biggest - and perhaps only cheer of this pre-season tour - was saved for the hapless Phil Bardsley, whose fizzing shot hit the inside the of post, rolled across the line, hit the outside of the opposite post and bounced out. Keane celebrated with a leap and a whoop of the kind I've not seen from him before, even when Sunderland score in the Premier League.

"They were full of talk, but they'll all be silent over lunch," said Keane, after chastising his crestfallen troops on his way over to talk to the press. "They will go on about hitting the post, but hitting the post doesn't count does it. Don't you worry I'll be collecting the money of them, everyone will pay."

I can't imagine anyone will attempt to escape their debt either, not with the transfer window still open!

Your paint the picture of RK as a hardened nutter who puts his masculinity before all else. Yet he has out done Newcastle in the transfer market, they said Chimbonda would go to the town they are a bigger and better Club aren't they? No he is not he is going to SOL didn't even speak to Keegan. Kaboul won't go to Sunderland Villa & Pompey are bigger aren't they? No he's on his way to SOL. Newcastle are being rejected left & right and if Sunderland put in a bid for anyone they are in like Flynn, they have no charisma no system no idea and a Chairman he doesn't care a jot. Oh how the might have fallen. Send for the Bin Laden family it's the last and desperate grasp of troubled and clueless people who see the bumpy road ahead.

Even though the blog is about the mackems, it’s still quite interesting.

The similarities between Keane at Sunderland and Keegans first reign at the toon seem so similar.

Sunderland’s hierarchy seem to respect and listen to Keanes assessment and views on all fronts, sadly the stories in the media are now ringing true with regard to Newcastle’s hierarchy i.e. wise and this Jimenez guy.

Even with a smaller budget than fans or Keegan probably expected let Keegan manage all areas of football and scrap this so called ‘recruitment team’, its getting embarrassing.

Note From Luke
The comparison between Keane and Keegan is a valid one and there is far more momentum behind the Wearsiders at present. I think most Newcastle fans are getting increasingly annoyed by the apparent confusion at St James's Park regarding transfers

Whoever actually said NUFC were in for Chimp-Bonda? As for the other players the mackems have signed, they're a load of sh*te!!

We haven't signed anyone and it looks like we won't get anyone in, an all-too-familiar story. Reminds me of Roeder's pre-season. Coloccini is a decent player but I doubt his Premier League credentials and I doubt the hierachy are ever going to allow Keegan to bid for players like Bentley or Arshavin. It frustrates me that all other teams in the league are being linked with new signings and our only story is about the Little Scouse Dirtbag, who should be sacked. That'll reduce the wage bill.

Perhaps this board only thinks about the financial aspect of the club rather than the on-field antics. Shame really, it sounds all too familiar!!!

Good luck to Sunderland though, no matter how much you dislike Roy Keane you can't help respect the man. I hope they stay up this season too. It's always more interesting when they're around.....

Keith Hutton - why don't you try and focus on your own club instead of Newcastle? We are more interested in being successful than being better than sunderland - why don't you try and focus your energies in the same way? Although trying to be better than boro first may be a start.

As an aside, we are trying to sign quality - i doubt we would be turned down by the players you are signing. I also doubt we were in for chimbonda, it was just paper talk (probably initiated by his agent to try and get some interest from us).
