Tying The Knot

Posted by Luke on July 30, 2008 5:46 PM |

There haven't been many times in recent years that Newcastle United fans have had reason to look on enviously at the events unfolding at the Stadium of Light but now could be one such occasion.

As the Magpies labour ineffectively in the transfer market and Kevin Keegan attempts to put a brave face on whenever talking about the lack of depth to his squad, Roy Keane has done a pretty good job of strengthening his options with players who, if not world beaters, have proven themselves in the Premier League over a number of years.

The Magpies may be trying to sign a better class of player, but it is still annoying when your bitter rivals are welcoming a steady stream of new arrivals and you're stuck in limbo waiting for an Argentinean defender with a curly mullet to sign from Deportivo La Coruna.

Fabricio Coloccini is a highly-rated defender in Spain and, as an Argentina international he is certainly no mug, but we've seen time and time again how foreign players - and particularly defenders - can struggle to settle in the Premier League. It normally takes them at least six months and some never manage to get their head around out style of play.

Just look at David Rozehnal. An established international for the Czech Republic who initially looked as though he would be an inspired purchase only to lose his way at the first sign of physical contact.

Coloccini may well prove to be twice the player, but at least Sunderland know what they are going to get with Teemu Tainio, Pascal Chimbonda and El Hadji Diouf. As I've said, they're not earth shattering signings, but they will undoubtedly improve Sunderland's squad.

Talking of Diouf, Sunderland supporters will hope the Senegal international has learnt to keep his spit to himself now that he is a Sunderland player. The striker has, after all, appeared to have been to the same school for charm as Joey Barton hasn't he?!

As for Newcastle, questions are starting to be asked about exactly what Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez - the club's specially recruited recruitment team - have been doing all summer considering the Magpies have missed out on both Luka Modric and Pablo Aimar since the end of last season.

As things stand, despite the encouraging signing of Jonas Gutierrez and the fact Danny Guthrie has looked a decent buy in pre-season, Newcastle's squad is still desperately short on both quality and numbers.

It does not look like owner Mike Ashley has any intention of sanctioning a major spending spree - so much for the hope the billionaire would put some of his own money in to buy players eh? - but hopefully the club will still manage to sign the players Keegan desperately needs on the limited budget available.

Yes, Newcastle have some excellent players, but how often will Mark Viduka and Michael Owen play in the same side when you look at their history of injuries? How long can Nicky Butt keep going? Will Charles N'Zogbia get his head out of his backside long enough to show what a talent he is and where on earth is the creativity that's supposed to be a hallmark of Keegan's sides?

As for the French defender Sebastien Bassong who has signed this week from Metz, I've been told he had a trial at Wolverhampton Wanderers last season but failed to make the grade! Hardly encouraging, but I suppose at 22 he is young and I doubt Keegan has signed him to be first-choice centre-half next season.

For me, unless at least three or four top quality players are signed before the close of the transfer window, Newcastle will struggle to finish in the top half of the table, let along challenge for a Uefa Cup place. I just hope the people who control the purse strings at St James's Park realise this as well.

And that, folks, is it from me for a while. Please excuse the lack of activity on this blog since I returned from Portugal, but as some of you know I'm getting married this weekend so don't expect to hear from me for a couple of weeks. Please still leave your comments/complaints/whatever and I'll put them up when I get back. Wish me luck, I might just need it!

He's bought a lot of "journeymen", nothing more, nothing less. The majority of his new signings have looked into the mirror and clearly come the the conclusion, my days as a first team player at my present club are numbered.
While I don't expect great things from Newcastle, I really do believe the Mackems will once again struggle.

You said it Luke… Watching the sun plummet into the ocean while sipping a cocoanut cocktail concoction, you can leave all thoughts of the stagnating staleness and stinginess of the Ashley revolution…the council of Elrond is being summoned!

I cant's see big Mike sitting with the supporters this season, I guess he's going to have need of a few extra body guards...Maybe there’s a job for that horrid little orc Joey Barton after all!

Enjoy

Spot on Luke, exactly what I've been saying. I can't see us bettering our cemented 13th place as things stand.

Unfortunately, it seems blatantly clear to me that the powers that be either don't realise this or just don't care.

The wall of silence from the new MD, the lack of feedback on concerns about exactly what Wise is doing for his money, and with actions speaking louder than words, nothing at all to look forward to other than another season of mediocrity.

Some will no doubt come on and say we're being pessimistic, but how else are we supposed to look at our potential for next season with the continuing lack of good news? Looking at Tottenham proves to me that they are the new Newcastle.

For a third season out of 4, I am concerned about the coming season, 1st when we appointed Souness, 2nd we we appointed Allardyce, and now this season coming, because we have brought in no skill, we are in no better a position talent wise (no pun intended) than we were this time last year, in fact, with the loss of the only play maker we had, in Emre, we're worse off. I look in envy to the squad spurs are assembling and wish Ashley would have bought spurs instead of Newcastle, at least it would have been 1 less club moving further away from Newcastle in the PL. It's a sad day when we are grouped with the Stoke's, Hull's and Wigan's of this world, but it shows how far back we have declined since Sir Bobby, I honestly think this will be my last season as a season ticket holder, as the prices rise, the quality does not improve, and you can only keep paying for crap for so long before enough is enough, I only hope I have to eat my words at the end of this season

Jaktar - get a life your jealousy shines through and does you no credit.

I work in the City in London among a number of Spurs fans. They are complimentary about all of the Spurs players we have picked up - in fact the only one they didn't rate was Kaboul who has of course dissed us. In particular many of them are gutted to lose Malbranque.

Diouf, despite the worries over his temperament kept Bolton up on his own in the final weeks of last season.

And if we do have any problems from the likes of Diouf or Chimbonda then I think we can sure that Roy will deal with it with a much straighter bat than we've seen at SJP.

Luke you might not consider these guys as world beaters but I think you might be quite pleased to see them turning out for the O's on a regular basis.

Anyway good luck for the nuptuals - hope all goes well. Just think in a few weeks time you can get used to coming back from the match via the pub and finding your dinner on the table and your slippers nicely warmed.

Have fun.

Hearing of the Mackems actual signings doesn't exactly gall me,especially not when I see who those signings are,but as you rightly point out, they'll have a bit more depth and cover to their squad!
M.A. stood at the Stadium of ***** last season,so being a man of the people that he professes to be,will know exactly how these things pan out down on the quayside and in the Bigg market on any given night of the year.
He says that the house needs putting in order, and what with him being a businessman of some considerable means,I'm sure he'll be able to do that, given time!
But,the priority,at this moment in time, starts front of house, under the watchful eye of the viewing public.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that we're deficient in some key areas, and that these areas need sorting out, sooner rather than later.
The Wise(?),Jiminez format is hardly setting anything alight either,is it!
People had to have it explained to them, what their jobs were, when they were brought into the Toon flock,KK
included,so someone had better go back to the beginning and tell messr's W.and J.what their m.o. should be!

It seems to me that the problem is very simple. The word is out amongst players and agents that the only reason to come to Newcastle is to get an over-inflated pay packet if you are past your best. Also they undoubtedly think the manager is out of date and probably out of his depth. If there is not mass realisation before Christmas that bringing Keegan back was a major mistake it will amaze me. Having talented players means nothing if they are not willingness to work hard and play for the team.

The warning signs have been there for several years and Toon fans are going to have to get very accustomed to looking with envy at Sunderland. Being second best is something that will last for at least the next decade unless something radical happens soon.

I hope it is not relegation at the end of the coming season but that is probably what will need to happen before what is necessary actually begins. Rebuilding in the lower leagues would provide a chance to remove the deadwood and rebuild properly.

Luke I cant tell you how depressed I was when you told me Bassong was rejected by Wolves, as all of these bargain buys we have picked up over the past 12months I was hoping we could uncover a gem (iam surprised how optimistic I am being).

I just feel as though this transfer window has been another wasted opportunity, unfortunately you have to spend lots of money to achieve anything in football now and we just haven’t done it compared to our rivals.

I still can’t get my head around why we are now behind the likes of Villa, Man City and never forgetting Spurs. Why are we behind these sides now? I even seem to be accepting that we are not even considered to be in the reckoning to sign big players anymore.

This football club has changed, it was only a few seasons ago we were the ones who were spending, constantly trying to catch the big four. How far away that seems now.

I suppose all we can do as fans is take to our seats and support who ever is wearing the black and white but it will be hard to take when we are well beaten by far better players compared to ours, it will be then we again wonder why we haven’t got the better players.

The sad thing is whilst I agree with Jaktar, Newcastle have too often been guilty of the same signing policy. What disturbs me further is that there is now talk of only two further signings. Coloccini would be an excellent buy, but there is now talk of Tottenham being after him, likelihood is we will lose out again. When all is said and done Wise and Jimenez should be hung out to dry! This recruitment policy sounds good but has been abysmal! Turan, Modric, Gomez, Aimar, Riise, Crouch, Arshavin, the list of their failures is endless. What annoys me most is we are learning that the majority of these negotiations dragged on pre Euro 2008, even the agent of Coloccini stated that the offer first surfaced 3 months ago. The whole affair has been a complete joke Luke, right now we are a club in decline and I have genuine fears of relegation

sunderland may be buying journeymen but if you look backwards to what they were getting last season they were only getting championship players, surely getting journeymen PL players instead of championship players is an improvement isn't it? They aren't about to struggle, especially if they get in a good FW. Maybe those players wouldn't fit into newcastle's team but I can assure Steed Malbranque would.

Lee,i believe Roy Keanes signigs this summer are exactly the kind Newcastle are trying to stay away from after previous mistakes. We have had enough of journeymen coming to the Toon for one last pay day or other clubs rejects.Id much rather we continue with our recent adgenda of signing top young players from around Europe who have the hunger to play for the club and hopefully are young enough to develop loyalty with us over a long eriod.Do you really want Keegan to be signing the likes of Chimbonda and Tiano who have virtually been press ganged into moving to Wearside?

Haha Jaktar, Journeymen, Diouf and steed would get in any squad bar the top 4 and most first teams, even if they were would prefer it to a convict low life, we've had some c**p plays recently but you actually have c**p human beings. You Geordies really do get bitter at times like these. Steed in particular was voted by the fans last year as the second best player at his club. Its fine that your a bit upset i would be if Barton was dragging my clubs name through the mud, was looking forward to the reception he'd get at the stadium of light but will probably be suspended for all next season. You better just hope him Wise and Ashley dont go for a night out otherwise there will be even more convicts associated with you's lot. Just hope you's aint relegated, could be tough for you next season.

Regards

I really don't care who the mackems or any one else has signed, or indeed how they are going to perform in the comming season.

My thoughts are with the Toon and at the moment, we are in our usual disarray and the talk of the London media, which isn't good to read.

So hope for the comming season ahead? not good reading i'm afraid, as it will be our usual struggle to impact on the premier league, but we always have hope and we just might grind out a few good results, if our over the hill super stars (Owen Viduka, Amiobi etc)get their fingers out and actually play 5 concecutive games without injury.

It is all about Newcastle United FC and not these substandard players. Regardless of who wears the Toon shirt, we will support the Toon

Howay the lads

Is this article some sort of pre-marital gag? Luke, if you seriously think a single Mag is looking enviously at the recent Mackem arrivals, you really shouldn't be writing a football blog. Pascal Chimbonda and El Hadji Diouf are both notoriously dodgy characters. We've had enough of those at the Toon over the past few years thanks. And with Joey still there, I think Kev's got plenty man-management challenges to occupy his time. Roy's welcome to his high maintenance players of average talent. We'll hang on to land our, apparently, very professional, driven, Argentinian internationals. I'm pretty confident about which players will turn out to be a better investment.

'.....but at least Sunderland know what they are going to get with Teemu Tainio, Pascal Chimbonda and El Hadji Diouf.'

They certainly do, particularly with regard to the latter two. Lots of verbal, tantrums and ego on and off the pitch. Combine that with questionable application, intermittent ability and the occasional 'phlegm' incident and the SMB's transfer policy is shown up to be precisely what it is - scraping the barrel - though under prevailing conditions this is probably the best they can hope for.

Whatever, the above noted rabble against two full Argentine Internationals and a promising French U 21 International - and all for pretty much the same money - the Toon are clearly in transfer turmoil, there is no doubt!!

All in all, I reckon Jaktar's conclusion as to the likely outcome of next season is spot on. Here's hoping then, that Gateshead get promoted again to lift the regional gloom!!

I agree with yoy Luke.
We need some top quality players to finish top half, but with this squad 12th may be a decent option again.
No chance of UEFA Cup next season unless the powers that be stop being so tight, or sell up (if newspaper stories are to be believed).

I don't think the Mackems have signed top quality players, but these guys have experience that'll come in very useful. They'll finish bottom half and below us, but they should be good enough to avoid any relegation trouble.

Why would we be looking on enviously? The players he has bought, in the main, were failures at Spurs, they only finished one place behind the Toon, despite arguably having one of the best strike forces in the league. Diouf is best known for aiming spit at anybody that upsets him. Cant understand your headline.

At least Newcastle are signing players who want to play for the club. Im sure ive heard diouf saying he wanted european footbal but he goes to the first team who are stupid enough to try to sign him. Newcastle will sign the right players for the club as mike ashely has said in the new magzine and all the press sayin he is selling is lies. Even the team now would beat Sunderland. It just shows because our last two games hav been good results for Newcastle against teams in europe. Finally Newcastle want to get into the top 10 at least hopefully europe and Sunderland only want to finish mid table. A faliure according to a lot of press for Newcastle but not for sunderland. I wonder who is the club with ambition?

Are you having a laugh? I think there must be a place on the Sun's sports desk with your name on it! Fair enough, Newcastle may not have brought in the steady stream of quality players that we all would have liked but are you seriously suggesting that we should be envious of the likes of the odious El HadJ Diouff, the mercenary Chimbonda and Malbranque who was well over priced when he signed for Fulham years ago. Lordy, I cannot even remember any of the others, they caused such a stir when they signed. Quite frankly I don't give a monkeys about what happens at the SOS because they are totally irrelevant in terms the importance of our season.

Just watched the 'Fantastic' new signings (or Tottenham reserves) on show for Sunderland!!! HAHAHA HOHOHO HEHEHE!!! Malbranque looked canny for about 20 minutes, then became the journeyman he is, Diouf was no different to other seasons, getting in decent positions only to make a hash of everything whilst moaning like a spoilt brat and Chimbonda is gonna cost them at least half a dozen penalties this season too!!! Oh....And where were all the 'loyal' fans on the opening day of the season??? Oh dear..same old...same old...
