Why Don't You Have Anything To Say Kev?

Posted by Luke on July 3, 2008 5:54 PM |

Kevin Keegan has had a plane named after him by the airline Flybe.com. I’d like to tell you more, but Newcastle’s manager appears to have taken a rather strange vow of silence this summer.

Despite making his first public appearance since his final press conference of last season following the 3-1 defeat at Everton in May Keegan did not want to talk about football issues as it would be, in his words, “pointless. Erm, okay then Kev, whatever you say, or rather don’t say!

So I’m afraid we do not know anymore about his first new signing Jonas Gutierrez, we don’t know if he was signed by the manager or Executive Director Dennis Wise, we don’t know what he will bring to the team.

We can’t confirm whether he is close to signing anymore players, we don’t know if he is happy with the progress being made in the transfer market, we can’t end any of the constant flow of speculation linking Newcastle with players at home and abroad, we don’t even know if he has enjoyed his summer holiday.

We still don’t know whether Charles N’Zogbia has decided to stay at St James’s Park, we don’t know if he is willing to sell James Milner and we have still not been given any update from him on the progress been made in Michael Owen and Steven Taylor’s new contract talks.

Keegan will not be speaking for another couple of weeks at least, but has promised to shed some light on things before the first pre-season friendly against Hartlepool on July 19!

Keegan, of course, isn’t the only silent figure at St James’s Park. Since Chris Mort decided to end his stint as chairman last month we’ve also had no communication from the man who replaced him, the new managing director Derek Llambias. It isn’t so much a case of a message being lost in translation as no message at all!

Unfortunately, while this appears to have become a deliberate strategy in order to keep things in house, it merely allows those who are determined to knock the club at every opportunity - and we know there are plenty out there nationally - to get away with writing what they like without any sort of right of reply.

It is, of course, my job to report things to you and offer an insight into everything that happens, but by not speaking Newcastle must realise they are effectively ignoring their customers - oops, sorry, fans.

But what we do know that Kevin is flattered to have a plane named after him and that the champagne he attempted to spray in the air in celebration failed to fizz. Let’s hope it isn’t a sign of things to come this season - in more ways than one.

Luke I am not sure what your agenda is, Keegan has already said that Milner is going nowhere, the matter of who signed Jonas is a irrelavant one, unless the aim is to stir up further unrest, the silence you talk about, the remained silent then signed Jonas, they did not trumpet their intentions from the roof tops thereby inflating the price, this was KK strategy last time he was here, a case in point was everybody thaought he was after the American Lalass the he fooled everybody by signing Phillipe Albert. Your blog this morning disappoints me it is more like what the Red Tops would print.

Note From Luke
I'm sorry it disappoints you, but my point is Kevin Keegan hasn't said James Milner isn't going anywhere, he hasn't said anything at all on the matter which allows people to continue to speculate. Do you not want to know what Keegan thinks of Jonas? Do you not want to hear from your manager? I guess i should just follow my own advice and remember that patience is a virtue! We shall hear all, I'm sure, in two weeks time.

Excellent, top notch story Luke, a little knowledge is a wonderful thing. It seems that the club is doing it right at long last!

Be sure to keep us informed of nothing else happening! Oh there's Cricket today, so plenty of scope!

Note From Luke
Alright, I admit it, I was annoyed because I spent three hours at the airport waiting to speak to him and then he said he wasn't doing anything for another fortnight!

Concerning indeed. I presume this was a Wise, Jimenez signing which is fair enough, the guy looks a decent player but I'd like to know if KK would have preffered SWP or Lennon. Another story in the press today regarding Ashley selling the club, is this behind the silence? One thing is for certain and that is that someone needs to say something, though I was impressed by the fact this was a guy never even linked with Newcastle.
Perhaps KK is growing frustrated by how far we have fallen in the eyes of top European players? With all respect to Guttierez untill I read about the Spiderman celebration I had no idea who he was! I think what Keegan would have loved was a Henry or Deco, but what he'll get is another Wise/Jimenez player from a mid-table La Liga club. Whatever happens I just hope we retain Keegan, because if he walks we are in SERIOUS trouble

Note From Luke
Like you JC I was actually rather impressed Newcastle managed to keep the Jonas signing under the radar, but that does not mean there are other things we'd like to hear about before the start of pre-season, some of which I've stated above. The rumours about the sale of the club merely suggest even more is going on behind the scenes.

For how long have we all moaned about NUFC business being done in public, yet now it is being done privately and behind closed doors you are not happy. Why, because for once it means you will actually have to do some real journalistic work instead of getting away with being paid to simply spend 5 minutes typing out what the manager/directors have said, and everybody reckons players get paid for doing next to nowt!!
Under Shepherd it was all done in public resulting in him shouting his mouth off and not just whilst on “club business in Spain and resulting in a string of overrated players at inflated prices and constant seasons of transition under poor managers, except for the one person of real quality he employed, Sir Bobby Robson and even then he did all he could to undermine him. How easy your job was then.

If this new way of doing things means more signings like Jonas Gutierrez then brilliant, after all this is how special K did things last time and we ended up with a certain Mr Shearer.

You say there are many people nationally eager and willing to knock the club well take a good look at yourself as you are doing exactly the same. You should be ashamed of yourself and so should your bosses for allowing you to print your article. Perhaps you should be praising Mr Keegan for not bringing the club into the media for the wrong reasons, for not raising fans hopes with false rumours and for going a long way towards giving his customers some pride back in their club. I used your word customers because that IS what we all are and he and the players are in the entertainment business and he realises this, which is why we are also his fans.

Note From Luke
I am far from ashamed of myself Jason. I believe something similar has been written about the lack of communication at the club has been written in several fanzines over the last few months, but I have bitten my tongue until now. I have no problem with transfers been done in secret - you will notice I didn't complain about that in the article - transfer should be done in secret, unless you are looking to unsettle a player Gareth Barry style! But wouldn't it have been nice to hear what KK had to say about his first new signing?
Believe me, I don't want a return to the Freddie Shepherd days, but the club remains silent on a lot of things now and not always for the best. Do you think there will be any comment from anyone regarding latest takeover stories? No, which allows them to run and run, causing destabilisation and an atmosphere where the club become easy targets for the rumour mongers. I'd rather deal in facts and genuine opinions and it would have been helpful if Kevin had shared a few of his thoughts, that's all.

What a silly article. Makes you seem like you are hunkered and weeping in a corner.Dont you mean that you ( a southerner ???) and that moron at the Chronicle and the mackam Harrington at the Sunday Sun(why on earth is he allowed to comment on NUFC) now have to work at a story instead of relying on "insiders" to feed you the crap that we have been used to in the past.
Try adding up how many articles Moron has written "out of the mouth" of Taylor
- a player "incidentally" ( a moron favourite word that) no one who I talk to gives a fig about.
I am 64 years old more than old enough to remember John Gibson being so close to Malcolm Macdonald I am amazed either of them could still breathe. For years we have put up with local paper drivel about NUFC from what can best be described as hangers on. Dalglish whilst a lousy manager at least had my admiration for the way he dealt with the local press especially Moron.Thank god for the internet and I dont have to buy your papers any more.

Note From Luke
Just still reading them on the internet which I'm very pleased about. I can't really comment on your dislike for our sister papers but I hope The Journal provides you with reliable and thoughtful coverage of sport, not just Newcastle, in the region. Look Ron, I've stirred up a hornet's nest with this latest entry and I don't apologise for that! See previous comments for my answer to some of your other points.

Note From Luke
There was a story to tell about Jonas which was on The Journal's back page Zebra! This is a blog which i supposed to offer something a little different from the norm, which is why I said what I said about Keegan's reluctance to talk about NUFC at this stage. I'm sure we will find out all we want to know in a couple of weeks, but it's been a long summer and I wanted some answers now, that's all.

I can understand your chagrin Luke, if that's the word to describe your annoyance. After all, without info from the maestro you'll be forced into writing about cricket or stag nights. But in one way, the targets of KK will be fairly safe until they're signed, sealed and delivered...unlike Modric and Jonathan Woodgate etc. Secrecy has never been a forte of NUFC in transfer targets, hence the inflated prices we end up paying for eventual losers, apart from Keegan's last time here when most of the entertainers were paraded after they'd signed, so nowt's changed there then. Ultimately, it might be a good thing to stop the gossip-mongers. Stuff what the southern-press dream up anyway, they'll do that any time they're bored and I for one don't ever read the nationals. We've ended up with a top-class international winger, and hopefully his buddy Aimar who after watching him on u-tube will set the Premiership alight - Gazza incarnate!! Our club might just about be on the way to real stability and success with a tough new strategy dreamed up by our new London bosses, quite a bit different from the past insular, and selfish regimes. I've been the typical Toon optimist for years, you have to be to follow this lot, but recently I voiced my frustrations after a few shocks since Kev's arrival. I may have to eat humble pie, along with quite a few blogsters if we start the season with a batch of signings of Gutierrez' quality. We have to be optimistic Luke, every fan is at this time of an approaching new season, even Sunderland's fans will be expecting this year to finish higher than us, tee-hee.

Note From Luke
For the last time, I wasn't complaining about the Jonas transfer being done in secret, I've actually applauded that, it's the various other matters that we might have benefited from talking to the manager about that I'm complaining about!

Hi Luke This is a very strange situation KK is after all one of the great communicators so something smells very fishy here- I guess we will know ultimately -I still cant make my mind up on MA-is he really trying to sell the club-or what- just wish we knew what was really going on-these are strange people at the club are they not-to me they lack the passion and the understanding of what Newcastle United is all about. If they want to keep the club then fine but I must say their communication and public relations stinks-since I have spent most of my life in customer care I think I need to get up there with my power point and tell them a few things they dont seem to know.

Note From Luke
At last, someone who has grasped the point I was trying to make Ray! From what I'm told, KK used to talk to the media after virtually every training session during his first spell as manager, now he can go more than two months without talking about football at all. As for the people who run the club, they do not seem to believe they have to say anything at all publicly. At least Chris Mort realised the importance of communicating with the fans, in fact he went out of his way to improve these channels, meeting fanzine editors and the local press etc. I don't blame them for being suspicious of the national media given some of the things they've thrown at the club in the last year or so, but surely they need to have some dialogue with their core support?

Note From Luke
No Ian, there was one sentence from Kevin, not an interview, but I've pretty much said everything I want to say on this subject now. Also, it's "no" when used in "no different" and "write" when writing about something. My mum was a teacher and I feel the need to correct things like this sometimes. And YES, I know I sometimes make mistake as well before any clever clogs out there remind me!

Touched a nerve there, Luke!

I think this wall of silence is probably one of two things.

Either the club is united against the national press refusing to give or respond to rumour and speculation, or the club isn't united and comments aren't being made in order to make a point to one another.

I hope it's the first. I couldn't be more pleased at the way we've done the Jonas deal, as it would seem we've grabbed a bargain.

Although people haven't seemed to receptive to this blog post, Luke, I did enjoy your article in the main paper this morning. You may remember I've been harping on for the club to go for Pablo Aimar for weeks now, so to read that this is becoming a possibility gave me a great boost over my corn flakes! Where did you hear this from and does it seem like it could really happen anytime soon?

Note From Luke
It has come from Spain, although it may just be that the Spanish journalists are putting two and two together to make five! It's that time of year. I hope he comes as well though Sy, would be another good signing.

I'm sure if you contact 'the insider' you would get to know everything you need to know as no doubt Kev will be telling him/her all his plans for the coming season. The fact that Kev is choosing to keep his cards close to his chest probably stems from the fact that the names of what appear to have been ligitimate transfer targets have been publiscised in the past and this has possibly contributed to our failure to sign them - an insider said today!

Oh dear, it's my ball and I'm not playing anymore.

I would have thought living up in the NE you at least would be better than the Southern media and actually have a clue about the clubs supporters, but apparently not. I think you expected to get support from whingeing NUFC fans and when you don't that's it, end of blog.
What a poor attitude being miffed that someone as unimportant as Kevin Keegan should not want to talk to the ever so important Luke Edwards. I wish I got paid for sitting at an airport for 3 hours just waiting for someone.

By the way I am sure KK will speak to the media after nearly every training session, when he actually has one!!!

Just admit it Luke, lazy journalism, and I'm sure your Mother never taught you to try and humiliate YOUR customers by chastising them on their spelling and grammar in the public domain, you owe Ian Hadley an apology. My report on your article…does just enough to get by but could do much better!!!

Note From Luke
Jason, the blog is still going strongly, as you can see. I have the right to reply to anyone's criticism, just as you have the right to reply to everything I've written. Perhaps I was being a little picky with Ian's grammar, but it was quite glaring wasn't it?!
I just think a lot of you got the wrong end of ths stick. Read Ray Wilson's comments, someone who has worked in public relations.

WOW Luke!! If you could only put the pin back into that grenade. I read and replied to your article before hearing the MA selling up story, and reading your other blogsters. Flippin' heck I've never seen such vitriol, but the passion is apparent for wor Toon. You're right mate, something's definitely fishy here. I did hear from a source down south that KK's soccer circus had allegedly milked his bank account almost dry and he needs this job so badly that he just can't rock MA's boat or else, hence his caning outside the headmaster's door in London recently. It wouldn't shock anyone if MA sold for a fat profit, it's what he does to amass 2 billion. Let's just hope that they're as good as the Glaziers at Man.U. You could print some of these dynamite letters if you can't get any real stories from inside SJP. Don't take this too personal bonny lad, it'll be forgotten by next week. I'M NOT EXPECTING YOU TO PRINT THIS LUKE, IT'S JUST A PERSONAL CONSOLATION, YOUR WORK IS USUALLY VERY GOOD, HANG IN SON. RON

Note From Luke
Ronnie, I'm fine, don't you worry about me. Part of my job is to spark debate and part of this blog is to look at things from a different angle. Some people haven't liked the angle I've taken, but hey ho, at least they're reading it in the first place. Thanks for the support anyway.

Paul Patterson wrote...

Luke, Luke, Luke, Luke. What have you done here?

I’m not sure what to think, is it good on one hand that Kevin isn’t giving too much away and possibly waiting for another high profile capture, and not blabbing about it- or building ‘Spiderman’ up, before we’ve even seen the guy, or, is it worrying that he isn’t commenting on him, because he isn’t fully his signing/isn’t his first choice and/or that’s just about all the transfer budget that Ashley will be allowing him to splash?

All are highly plausible, so I’m not too sure where your critics are coming from, sharpening their knives like a London teenager in slashing your latest ‘work’ to pieces.

I’ll feel better when/if we sign a few more players, which are desperately needed by the way, this will give us an indication on Kevin’s silence and it may just be a case of the calm before the storm and ‘keeping things in perspective’ without letting cats out of bags before eggs are hatched and so on and so on.

‘Spiderman’ (Please can we get that put on his shirt for the start of the season?) will add great competition to the right hand side, whilst also acting as a left winger so I’m led to believe and play in the middle behind the front two. A real versatile attacker, so it seems a shrewd move.

I still worry about the inexperience of Jose Enrique, and I’m STILL FURIOUS, about our lack of a fight to sign John Arne Risse, as he would have been brilliant. But a solid, experienced centre back is top priority and must be considered so for the time being.

We need a tough tackler with box-to-box ability, as I’ve written off Joey ‘Hates a Mcdonalds at 3am’ Barton and we need to sort that out sooner rather than later.

Also cover for the terminally fat/injured (Delete as appropriate) Mark Viduka should be sought as you simply can’t base a side around a player who doesn’t play his fair share of games, no matter how good that player is.

Either way, calm down Luke and if it doesn’t work out, I’m sure it will be your fault- End of Story. . . .

Paul

Luke, this is nothing personal, but you've just proved what we all already know - that journalists can make a story out of nothing - almost 500 words to tell us Keegan has nothing to say. You say it is 'my job to report things to you and offer an insight into everything that happens' - so you've nothing to 'report' and you've reported that to us, it's not very interesting but you've done your job. What you don't have is 'a story' and it's making your job difficult isn't it, it's annoying you?! If you can pen 500 words when he has nothing to say, no wonder he's staying silent!

Note From Luke
It was a valid observation about the manager's demeanour and approach to the job this summer and those 500 words have certainly proven to be talking point. You're right Paul, job done!

Luke - I would have thought it's pretty obvious why kk doesn't want to talk to the press as all you lot will do is press him for the names of players we're trying to sign when all he wants to do is actually work on getting them here. Hopefully you'll have so much to write about after his interview in 2 weeks time it'll keep you going for the rest of the year.

The latest news about Taylor signing a new contract is in fact news, and great news at that, once again justifying Mr Keegan’s stance on saying nowt until something has actually happened.

I appreciate that it can be difficult filling space at this time of year but at least you could be more positive.

As for reading Ray Wilson’s comments because he is in public relations well there again we have lazy journalism, Ray clearly states he is from a customer care background. However the point is still made that according to Luke Edwards if you are not in public relations you have no idea what you are talking about. Another slap in the face for YOUR customers. I'm not sure why you are getting a hard time here Luke. No one complains that the transfer itself was done privately. That makes sense as it averted Europes elite from swooping and getting to the Spiderman before nufc - ok, maybe not.

But having made the first signing of the summer for KK to comment it would be 'pointless' to comment on it would seem to be absurd. Every manager in the country feels the need to say something positive when a player is signed and for KK to say 'pointless' is in my recollection unprecedented.

KK knows that by not publically bigging up a new signing it will be interpreted as a 'wise/jiminez' imposed move.

There are some who are prepared to label anyone who question what is going on at SJP as some sort of agent provocatuer. I remain firm in my conviction that KK is an old school manager (in the Ferguson, Redknapp, O'Neil) mode who believe the manager should orcestrate all signings and that is not what is going on at the moment.

Tin hat placed on head!

Note From Luke
Oh dear Andy, you'll only start them off again, but yes I didn't really understand why so many people got so upset about me suggesting KK could have shared his thoughts on the new signing, contracts and so on. Then again,we hadn't had a good bicker on this blog for a while so it was about time we spiced things up!

Keegan said: "Jonas is a wonderful signing for us. "I know a lot of other clubs have been interested in him. He will be a terrific addition to the squad.
"He is an exciting player and I'm sure our fans will enjoy watching him."
A club statement also read
Newcastle today described as "absolute nonsense" claims that Mike Ashley has put a price-tag of £420million on the club.

From what I have read Keegan has discussed the latest transfer and the club have commented on the takeover talk, the reason the club don't say anything on takeovers is that this subject has been written about since Ashley took over and I believe they are just sick of it. Are you sure that this "blog" is not more to do with you being upset at waiting at the airport for 3 hours and KK ignoring you???

Note From Luke
I notice Derek Llambias has finally decided to say something on Monday to explain Mike Ashley's situation which has - as I'd argued it would do last week - cleared up a lot of the suspicion and confusion. It doesn't mean the club won't be sold, but it doesn't look like they are actively looking for a buyer. Sometimes in football more is needed than press office released statements.
