Kevin Keegan has had a plane named after him by the airline Flybe.com. I’d like to tell you more, but Newcastle’s manager appears to have taken a rather strange vow of silence this summer.
Despite making his first public appearance since his final press conference of last season following the 3-1 defeat at Everton in May Keegan did not want to talk about football issues as it would be, in his words, “pointless. Erm, okay then Kev, whatever you say, or rather don’t say!
So I’m afraid we do not know anymore about his first new signing Jonas Gutierrez, we don’t know if he was signed by the manager or Executive Director Dennis Wise, we don’t know what he will bring to the team.
We can’t confirm whether he is close to signing anymore players, we don’t know if he is happy with the progress being made in the transfer market, we can’t end any of the constant flow of speculation linking Newcastle with players at home and abroad, we don’t even know if he has enjoyed his summer holiday.
We still don’t know whether Charles N’Zogbia has decided to stay at St James’s Park, we don’t know if he is willing to sell James Milner and we have still not been given any update from him on the progress been made in Michael Owen and Steven Taylor’s new contract talks.
Keegan will not be speaking for another couple of weeks at least, but has promised to shed some light on things before the first pre-season friendly against Hartlepool on July 19!
Keegan, of course, isn’t the only silent figure at St James’s Park. Since Chris Mort decided to end his stint as chairman last month we’ve also had no communication from the man who replaced him, the new managing director Derek Llambias. It isn’t so much a case of a message being lost in translation as no message at all!
Unfortunately, while this appears to have become a deliberate strategy in order to keep things in house, it merely allows those who are determined to knock the club at every opportunity - and we know there are plenty out there nationally - to get away with writing what they like without any sort of right of reply.
It is, of course, my job to report things to you and offer an insight into everything that happens, but by not speaking Newcastle must realise they are effectively ignoring their customers - oops, sorry, fans.
But what we do know that Kevin is flattered to have a plane named after him and that the champagne he attempted to spray in the air in celebration failed to fizz. Let’s hope it isn’t a sign of things to come this season - in more ways than one.
