The Honeymoon Is Over But The Season Has Just Started

Posted by Luke on August 20, 2008 1:56 PM |

I don't know what was more surprising to discover at the end of my honeymoon. That some light fingered scumbag (albeit with a good taste in clothing) had helped themselves to some of my luggage or that Newcastle United had drawn 1-1 at Manchester United!

Yep, that's right folks the married man is finally back at work after a thoroughly enjoyable wedding and honeymoon and, after three weeks away from work I'm feeling refreshed and recharged and ready to hit the ground running.

In fact, I'm actually excited about the prospect of covering my first game of the season when Bolton arrive at St James's Park on Saturday and let's hope the fresh optimism generated by a point at Newcastle's very own Theatre of Nightmares - Old Trafford - continues against one of English football's less glamorous sides.

That, of course, has been a persistent failing of Newcastle sides in the past, but at least the season has got off to an encouraging start and given the disastrous results against the Red Devils in recent years, the excitement a draw has generated on Tyneside is, for once, justified.

Obviously, I wasn't at the game last weekend and I didn't even watch it on television. I'd promised the wife I wouldn't watch or read anything about football for the whole time we were away and it's far too soon in our marriage to be breaking promises!

However, from what I've heard since we landed, Newcastle were good value for their point and even if it did come against a depleted Manchester side, who the hell cares? I was at Old Trafford last season when a manager-less Magpies side were humiliated 6-0 and it's about time they returned to the North East with something to show for their efforts.

Importantly, it's also an early confidence boost for the players who have not looked full of the stuff during pre-season. I maintain that at least another two signings are needed before the close of the transfer window if United are going to have any chance of pushing for a European place, but there are a couple of weeks left yet and I'm intrigued to discover who this "wow" signing Mike Ashley has promised is going to be!

Comments like that are music to supporters' ears at this time of the year, but Newcastle's owner should also realise he has to deliver it now if such a bold statement isn't going to come back to haunt him.

Another Danny Guthrie - as shrewd an acquisition as he may prove to be - certainly does not fall into the wow category and Newcastle fans will expect this new arrival to be an international name.

Nevertheless, if we're all honest, few of us had heard of Jonas Gutierrez or Fabricio Coloccini before they were signed by Newcastle this summer, but early impressions of the two Argentineans are good and credit has to go to whoever it was who spotted them.

If Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez (Newcastle's invisible but apparently very powerful men) can lure another couple of players like this to the club this month nobody will be complaining about their presence at St James's Park, least of all the manager!

Again, though, a note of caution. It's easy to raise your game when it's your debut and you're playing the biggest club in Europe. Let's hope they are turning in the same sort of performances at Wigan in December because that is where the success of Newcastle's season - and their new signings - will really be measured.

As for Sunderland, a home defeat to Liverpool is nothing to be ashamed of, but one defeat can quickly become two when Tottenham away is next up.

I see plenty of you were upset by my comments regarding Sunderland's more successful business in the transfer market, but you have to remember I was speaking relatively.

All five of Roy Keane's signings have improved his squad, which is what he intended to do and the arrival of French striker Djibril Cisse from Marseille on Wednesday was (relatively speaking again Mags) a wow signing!

At this stage, Kevin Keegan's two signings have also improved his squad, but it still looks light on numbers. Both managers, though, will hope that their wheeling and dealing isn't done just yet...

Glad your back Luke, I just cant get in to Ryders 500 blogs a week! As for Old Trafford.....brilliant, have to admit I did fear a 3-0 defeat, but thought both Guttierez and Guthrie were superb and Coloccini promising. Keegan's passion and belief seemed to rub off on all and it is a promising start to the campaign, follow that up with a win on Saturday and we'll all be delighted.
As for new arrivals I can only hope they are as shrewd as the ones we have seen so far, they dont have to be a world beater, if possible I'd prefer a Guthrie someone who will play for the shirt. I cant stress how comfortable he looked on the ball, as for Spiderman his tracking back was excellent and his pace and direct running will be successful in the premiership. The last time I commented on your blog Luke I was a pessimistic fan (according to the National Lottery poll, Newcastle fans were the most pessimistic re their teams chances this season) Old Trafford has given us some belief back. Now we need Wise et al to pull off two more signings and I think we can look to challenge for fifth or sixth place. ROLL ON BOLTON!

Note From Luke
I think the result against Manchester United has done more for confidence among Newcastle fans than any of the club's transfer deals so far this summer. Still waiting for that wow signing though and it was strange to read Javier Sviloa's comments this week claiming he has had no contact with Newcastle, even though reports last week claimed United had been talking to him and Real Madrid for several days!

Welcome back Luke. Quite a difference three weeks can make, eh? Pessimism replaced by optimism on Tyneside and now that you're married you've probably already started noticing a few grey hairs which weren't there three weeks ago!

First off, I agree with your points on Sunderland's signings. The team they can put out now is worlds apart from the rubbish they sent to SJP last season. Particularly Diouf & Malbranque, and provided he settles - Cisse too.

By the same token, with just three additions to Newcastle's starting eleven, we look world's apart from last season too. If we could get another two or three with the same kind of quality and attitude, we'll be really flying.

I must say though, that I'm a tad bit nervous until Jonas and Coloccini arrive back unscathed from Minsk, as you know it'd be just Newcastle's luck to get one good and hugely promising game out of them, only for one of them to get an injury in a friendly. (For the record...I hate international friendlies in any way, shape or form.)

Speaking of Spidey, what a debut. But I was just as impressed with his overall attitude as his performance. The one thought I was left with on Sunday was "Spiderman, Spiderman - can't do what Gutierrez can!"

But I think the main thought on the mind of black & whites is just who else we'll bring in. Who will the 'wow' signing be? Personally, I'm finding it hard to speculate as there could be varying interpretations of what would constitute a wow signing. Could a loan move be classed as wow? Possibly not, but I'd love to see the Saviola deal happen. How about trying to take advantage of the lack of progress in Andrei Arshavin's situation?

Anyway, I doubt anything will happen before Bolton on Saturday. So here's hoping for a classic Keegan home performance and put them to the sword!

Bring it on!

Note From Luke
I don't know about grey hairs but I appear to have put a few pounds on having enjoyed the good life on a beach for two weeks! I'm sure there are a few less strands on the top of the bonce as well!
The swing between optimism and depression at Newcastle is probably bigger than at any other club in the Premier League, but a point at Old Trafford is a good result whatever way you look at it. It was also achieved without three players who were important in last season's recovery, Joey Barton, Michael Owen and Mark Viduka so, with another couple of astute buys, I'll stick my neck out and say Newcastle are capable of finishing in the top eight this season.

Hi Luke - A University of California study revealed that the average male sports fan increases his attendance at live events by 25% once committed to a long term relationship.

This rises to almost 40% when kids enter the equation.

We all wait with baited breath for the extreme domino world qualifier posts no doubt in the pipeline.

Note From Luke
Well I have volunteered to go a Newcastle Falcons game next month when I could have had the day off....
