It Could Be A Long Four Months

Posted by Luke on September 1, 2008 11:08 PM |

Quite what Kevin Keegan is expected to do if a couple of his defenders pick up an injury is anyone's guess, but the brutal truth is Newcastle's squad has a flimsy feel to it following the close of the transfer window.

The double signing of Uruguay international midfielder Ignacio Gonzalez and Spanish Under-21 international striker Xisco were welcome additions to the squad on deadline day, but they probably weren't enough to satisfy expectant supporters who were looking to be inspired by the new arrivals, not trawling the internet trying to discover who they are.

Quite where the "wow" signing owner Mike Ashley promised last month went is another mystery, but at least the billionaire can down a pint right lads and lasses!? Middle aged man in replica shirt downing warm, over-priced beer, it's enough to give football fans a bad name!

Last week, Keegan urged supporters to judge the quality of the club's transfer business after the close of the window and I think it's fairly safe to assume few of you are thrilled with what has happened this summer.

Ever the optimist, has the manager been let down by those above him? There were rumours flying around last night that Keegan argued with managing director Derek Llambias at a meeting yesterday. Muck-racking or approaching s**t storm, it's just more bad publicity for the club as a whole.

However, before everyone starts descending into doom and gloom mode, you never know how things are going to pan out over the course of a Premier League campaign and Newcastle do still have a pretty strong first XI as long as everyone is fit, with different options from the bench.

Everton had a small squad last season and they still managed to finish fifth because they were largely fortunate with injuries and made sure they did not pick up any un-necessary suspensions, Newcastle must hope for the same, at least until the transfer re-opens in another blaze of speculation in January. Erm, Nicky Butt, I think that applies to you don't you!?

In the meantime, the likes of David Edgar and Ben Tozer are going to have to rise to the challenge if injuries in defence do hit. Young lads like these are often heard bemoaning a lack of first team opportunities because of expensive foreign imports, well this season could be the making - or breaking - of them.

In midfield, Newcastle at least have a few options, even if one of them is public enemy number one Joey Barton and there are plenty of strikers for Keegan - typical of him - to choose from, even if they are all rather too familiar with the decor of the treatment room.

On another note, how ridiculous was the club statement yesterday which attempted to claim that Ashley did not know that the drink he was downing - illegally in his seat at Arsenal - was alcoholic. Talk about insulting our intelligence, seems to have become something of a theme!

Whoop, whoop, whoop, sorry I've gone slightly delirious after nine hours of listening to Sky Sports News.... like biting into a pair of sweaty socks while someone smacks you over the head with a rusty spoon!

PS....thats not really Ashley.I have it on good authority that he really is a recluse and never attends the matches. This guy with beer belly and standing with the Toon away supporters and downing pints is actually one of his stooges, paid to impersonate him and curry favour with the fans and media. How come we NEVER get an interview with him??. Jury out now on wots gonna happen to the Toon, but my verdict is "guilty" of misleading the fans, esp re the Wow signing. WOW, no big signings more like.....look at our transfer fees budget - nothing really spent on balance, so where has all the revenue and TV money gone this summer???...to pay for the free pints?....gee whizz it will be free pies next!!...

Note From Luke
Mike Ashley and his cronies simply don't believe they have to speak to the media because that is the way Ashley runs his business. Unfortunately, football isn't like other businesses. Things started to go wrong, for me, when Chris Mort left as he was the public link between the fans and owner. The lack of communication is bewildering and has allowed people to come to their own conclusions about Ashley's intentions!

Spot on article. As time goes by it is becoming increasingly obvious that the fans of NUFC are being treated like mugs.Having been a supporter for a very very long time it would be appreciated if a little more honesty came from inside the club.Continually raising expectations but failing to deliver will gradually see a falling away of the fan base, particularly in these difficult financial times.
If it was true that another club expressed an interest in Barton then by letting him go there would have been an instant lift in respect for the club by its supporters.JB may well be a factor in a reduced crowd and the failure to attract quality players.

Hi Luke -I am so glad fat Ash was noticed not just by me drinking illegally-think a club owner would understand the rules -not a good example. The season ahead is going to be stormy in more ways than one. Think KK has had enough of Wisey, fat Ash and co.now-and frankly so have most of us.Its beginning to sound more and more like the Mckeag days -I think the most popular song heard around St. James Park this season will be "Sack the Board"- Fat Ash probably thinks we are ungrateful -tell him we are not -we just want a owner who loves the club as much as we do-and if we lose KK -we will never accept Wisey or any one else that the fat man has in mind. Tranfer window is now closed-most of us stayed up half the night and are now feeling sick at breakfast. There is only one Kevin Keegan-pity there was never two Sir John hall.

Well i predicted trouble ahead, Ashley mafia are only in it for the money. Ashley does insult our intelligence and is very patronising towards the supporters. I am losing respect for KK, he really needs to make some kind of statement distancing himself from club policy, selling at a profit buying replacements on the cheap. Ashley will tell you he is running Newcastle on a sound business footing, like all busineses we do not to buy the product, I for one will not be buying.I sincerely hope i am wrong because i love newcastle but i this the edge of the hurricane has arrived with a major storm to follow. Please Kevin a statement from the heart do not become Ashleys yes man

There are times when I wish that I had never been born in Newcastle. I have lived in Manchester longer than I lived in Newcastle yet my heart is still with the Toon. Unfortunately, it looks as though the take over by Mike Ashley has not changed things for the better. The excitement that followed the take over has long since gone, and the promises made about strengthening the team are broken. Even King Kev has been hoodwinked - he made a statement about judging him at 12 midnight on Monday when he sold Milner to Villa. That time has come and passed. Well, judgement can now be made. I won't say what I really feel, other than to say my disappointment in the man is huge. I only hope that he can look at himself and say that he has not let anyone down by his actions. I don't know what is going on behind the scenes at Newcastle but what I do know is that I wouldn't say one thing in public and another behind the scenes - all we want is the truth.

Disgraceful! I feel betrayed! Even poor David Craig at Sky Sports had to admit that even at 11.10pm he knew nothing from the club. You see thats what we've become, a national laughing stock, where in days gone by we'd have sold Milner and been straight in there pitching for Arshavin or Berbatove, we are now left with two players who have next to no reputation. I can only pray they are good, but the time has come. I'm SICK of Mike Ashley, since he's come to the club it's been clear he has one intention and one only, to run it on a shoestring. I waited and waited last night for a surprise...'Newcastle sign Malouda'. 'Newcastle sign Moutinho'
but Nothing. Judge this club over the next few days eh? Well you have been judged and I am disgusted. Man City, Villa, Spurs are now on a different planet financially to the once big spending toon! I predict another season of struggling in the bottom half. ASHLEY OUT!

The lack of a recognised left back (other than Jose) is a concern. The one real deadline day signing we made {Xisco) seems to fit with our new policy of signing hungry young talent with potential (and sell on fee potential). A good thing. Hopefully the lad can play a bit. Whatever, he's GOT to be better than Smith or Ameobi. The loan signing smacks of desperation. And obviously no WOW signing yet - made worse on a day when Man City's dream came true and it could have (apparently) easily been us ...

I still don't think there's cause for rioting. We do have a thin squad, but we have a quality squad. And I would rather see Edgar and Tozer given a chance than some last minute panic buy of a journeyman defender blocking their path - we sold Carr, remember?! This might be the season where we unearth Steven Taylor MkII.

The reality is, NUFC is no longer an aspirational destination for TOP footballers. I don't think it has been for a long time, it's just we used to throw silly money at them and now we don't. Again, I think that's agood thing. We've got rebuild our great club piece by piece. Arsenal is the blueprint, not Chelsea. We were never going to be top 6 this year with the amount we needed to sort out. Top 10 and moving in the right direction is a good season. As long as Kev keeps the faith, so am I.

Peter wrote...

Man city get Robinho, we get (no disrespect) xisco, speaks volumes for the intent. Ashley claims that football clubs in future won't be able to sustain the big money wages and signings, well if the middle east are coming to the premier league, then I think Ashley will find that it can, and only the clubs willing to speculate will obtain the honour of top dogs and the likes of the penny watchers will see their clubs decline to continuous mediocrity within the lower half of the premier league. To Mike Ashley - If your not going to support the manager with the funds he needs to make a top class team,(and we can't all believe what we read about what funds are available and who's the decision maker) then go have your fun elsewhere, 45000 fans depend on the outcome. Why would Robinho go to Man City if it were merely prestige clubs top players were after.

Note From Luke
I think the events at Manchester City have accentuated the pain most Newcastle fans feel at what has happened at Newcastle. However, it's a bit harsh to say the group which has bought Man City could have bought Newcastle. One minute Ashley is being hammered for supposedly wanting to sell, the next minute he's been hammered for not selling. Let's see what happens with City first before we start going all green eye. As for the rumours Keegan has quit, blimey, it's going to be a long day!

Ashley and his london based cabal is increasingly looking like Freddie Shepherd mark 2:

The lack of input KK has into signings is increasingly reminiscent of the Luque / Kluivert signings

The handling of the Milner sale was poor and leaking Owen's contract details was a disgrace that we will no doubt pay a heavy price for

Now the fatitous boasting of a wow signing .. would that be the loan signing of the Spanish league 2 player ?

And finally the buffonery at Arsenal .. while funny in another context is something that a club like Newcastle can ill afford ..

So one depressing day follows another. Keegan not at training and in crisis meetings. This is a ******* disgrace! Mike Ashley had dare not turn up at St James' Park in the near future. We're going to end up with Wise, then some no name Spanish flop coach. Result.....I'm afraid to say that the prospect of relegation is very real! PLEASE KEEGAN dont desert us now!

Why is everyone so surprised, the writing has been on the wall for a long time. Ashley did not come here to spend money he came here to make money, and he will turn a profit of that I have no doubt, he is selling to reduce the debt on the hope that a buyer comes in with big money and big ambition, owning a football team is fashionable with the mega rich he knows that. Who have we bought Nacho Gonzalez sounds like a chilli burger to me,Xisco they make biscuit don't they, or something you rub on your piles. I make jokes but its not funny, we have been systematically hoodwinked, by a devious beer bandit that makes Shepherd look saintly, please KK don't leave he told us lies as well

How depressing is this for loyal toon fans. What I utterly fail to grasp however is that given our substantial failure to add materially to a perilously thin squad, precisely what have dirty Dennis Wise, Vetere and Cardinal Jimenez de Cesneros been doing to earn their inaviably substantial corn. Why did they not identify their targets earlier and act decisively? Luke - what on earth is going on? :-(

Sad to see good old honourary Geordie
doing his own quick transfer out.
It was always a likely option.
This time I think he did well to get out
now.
Perhaps we too need a hard as nails
middle eastern consortium of billionaires to land at St James's
with scimitars unsheathed and ready to
slash through the debris and import
big quality.Beer swilling Mike has to
cut costs to assuage his thirst obnviously.

MESSAGE TO THE NEWCASTLE UNITED BOARD

Thanks for making Newcastle United a complete laughing stock yet again. You've successfully managed not to bring in a single proven Premier League player in the transfer window, have failed to deliver the 'Wow' signing we were promised, have sold one of our better lads (Milner) and have now seemingly dispensed with the services of Kevin Keegan, just when things were starting to look a little bit better on the pitch. Superb work Gentlemen - give yourselves a big pat on the back...

I've said on this thread and many others over the last couple of weeks that Keegan was my barometer. As long as he was there, I was prepared to cut Ashley some slack. I believed that we were building a foundation for longer-term success. Something we've needed to do for ages.

Keegan's gone. Ashley has shown his true colours. And he is a disgrace. Complete scum. I am finished with the club for as long as Ashley's in charge. The only way we can influence this is by boycotting games, merchandise, anything that makes Ashley a quid.

A decade of crap is more than enough. Let'smake a difference and claim back our club.

Sick to the stomache! I sussed this gang out a while ago after hearing from a good source in London that Ashley, Wise, Jimminy Cricket and Mort met once a month in the back room of a bar in Chelsea to plan their secret strategy. A strategy I perceived then, and still believe to be the slowing down of this great club's progress in favour of his best buddies, Spurs. Hence Modric's last minute move. His whole toon-top, beer-swilling charade with supporters was no more than a politician's photo opportunity with a baby in his arms. So he spent millions in buying and paying off this club's debts, so what? He'd get it back in a few seasons of conning us with his merchandise, Sky money and selling players on etc., if not ultimately profiting from a sale of the club. His biggest blunder was bringing in KK as a stunt for this season's ticket sales and daring to imagine that he was just another manager. Yes Kevin needed the job and money as his soccer circus bombed, yes he took the flak for the board with Milner, but you can only push a man of deep principles so far. I only hope that Kev stays for us, cos Ashley and his cabal are already doomed. His merchandise will nosedive and he'll never again have his back slapped by grateful fans, maybe his fat chops. SELL UP ASHLEY, GET OUT NOW! OR WATCH YOUR BACK KIDDA. There will be deep feelings against you for a long time bonny lad. P.S. Luke, I wrote and recorded a song which I was assured would be played at the Bolton game, but wasn't as far as I'm aware. Do you think the lyric might have been checked by the board first?

FANFAR FOR THE TOON
It's been a long time comin' now,
the writin's on the wall
united everybody stands,
divided everyone falls
the revolution's in the air,
the time is right for a change
it's time to show what we can do,
it's time to re-arrange, re-arrange now

Chorus:- la-la-la-lalalala- lalalala Geordies la-la-la-lalalala- lalalala Geordies

Hands across the nation,
hands across the sea
Geordie boys all around the world
are singin' in unity
Right down under in the land of Oz,
to the deserts of Sudan
An' way out west in the U.S.A.
you can hear them singin'
every boy and every man...

Chorus:- same as chant used at ground with the Beatles ' Hey Jude ' tune

were singin in corner in the Gallowgate end in the Leazes and the platinum stand, HA! theres big Mike Ashley with his toon top on and Kevin Keegan is gettin on down.....
