Keegan - The End?

Posted by Luke on September 2, 2008 5:12 PM |

It is the news every Newcastle United fan fears but probably expected - Kevin Keegan is believed to have left the club for the second time as a manager in protest at the manner in which it has conducted its transfer business this summer.

If the rumours, reports and rants are true, it must be said that the severing of ties has been coming for weeks, if not months, as the manager's relationship with the United board gradually deteriorated to the apparent point of no return.

A club statement insisted on Tuesday night that he had not been sacked, but it is still far from certain he hasn't walked in protest at the way he has been treated.

The breaking point appears to have come on transfer deadline day when, having publicly supported the decision to sell James Milner to Aston Villa for £12m - despite rowing with managing director Derek Llambias last week - Keegan had given the Magpies money men a chance to redeem themselves.

"Judge us after the close of the transfer window," Keegan said as he spoke positively about the impending arrival of players which would make the sacrifice of Milner worthwhile. Keegan was attempting to put pressure on the board to make the breakthroughs in the transfer market he had expected all summer and they were unable to rise to the challenge. When Keegan criticised them for this, war broke out behind the scenes.

Instead, all Keegan got was a Spanish Under-21 striker, Xisco and a central midfielder, Ignacio Gonzalez. With no new defenders in place, leaving him a squad which is short on numbers, particularly at the back, Keegan knew Newcastle were going to struggle to make any sort of impression on the top ten, let alone the top six Ashley's envisages.

That incensed Keegan and, having rowed again with Llambias again on Monday, it seems the persistent insubordination was too much for the board to take, particularly Llambias who does not speak much in public but, so I'm told, has earned a ruthless reputation at St James's Park.

They probably think they have taken a tough stance and have shown they are ultimately in charge of the club, but it could be the biggest mistake of their short time in football. A mistake which will rapidly turn into a disaster if Dennis Wise is named as Keegan's successor.

To be fair - and some of you will not even think I should do this when it comes to Wise - there is absolutely no evidence to suggest Wise has deliberately tried to undermine Keegan in his role as Executive Director (football), but his presence at St James's Park, having quit as manager of Leeds, has been seen as suspicious from the start by fans who still remember how much they hated him as a player.

What the Newcastle hierarchy must realise - and I'm sure they will do over the coming weeks if Keegan does not agree to stay - is they have lost a club legend. Virtually everyone on Tyneside will feel Keegan has been treated abominably and that may never be forgiven, let alone forgotten.

Having pulled off a public relations masterstroke when he brought him back as manager, Ashley appears to have pressed the self-destruct button in firing him. How he must wish he had a buyer lined up now!

It does not matter how many burly minders he takes with him on Newcastle's next away game, Ashley should realise his days of sitting with the fans are over.

Not such a big laugh now is it Mike? It doesn't matter how many rounds you buy in a bid to improve your popularity, or how many times you dance around stupidly in your replica shirt - I wonder what he'll do with the King Kev 1 one now - the directors box is likely to be your only sanctuary.

But, perhaps, Ashley has realised the error in judgement made by Llambias on Tuesday morning. With the club still refusing to comment despite the widespread reports claiming he has left, could it be that United's owner is frantically trying to get Keegan to remain as manager?

If KK has gone so has my 45+ years of supporting NUFC. What a tragic waste of a football club and obviously Ashley has just been feeding us all porky pies since he took over. Come bavck Fat Freddie all is forgiven!

Like you,Luke,I live in hope that Kev
has 2nd thoughts.
The major flaw here seems to be that
our owner is in the wrong league.
Premiership owners,or consortiums, should have unlimited funds.
Perhaps the owner should move himself down to the lower leagues, quickly, before
we drop down.A lot of animosity to D.Wise.I don't think he's the problem
and I don't mind feisty cockneys big or small. Kenny

I hope KK tells the fat bloke to stick it. How could he ever trust Ashley again after this debacle? A man who lies about something as petty as what's in his glass(!) is obviously prepared to lie about anything.

The 'official statement' is nothing more than a smoke screen to try to deflect the heat off Ashley - place the blame on Kev for walking and let the southern journos call him a "bottler" again. It's the same cynical PR approach that led to the Milner transfer request announcement and the Owen "improved" contract offer. Ashley and his cronies think we're thick Geordies.

Ashley is scum. Wise is scum. Llambias is scum. I am fnsished with the club until they are gone. Hopefully then we can get KK back.

Boycott the games. Boycott the products. Kick out the scum. Reclaim the club.

Note From Luke
Restless indeed. From what I can gather Keegan's beef is with Derek Llambias, the managing director, not Ashley himself. It can still be pulled back from the brink, but it might need a UN peacekeeping force to do so!

As an ardent Newcastle supporter from Norway (I've lived in Gosforth though), it's very interesting to follow Nufc from abroad. Watching the games (myp2p on my PC...), and reading every word about Nufc in both Norwegian and English newspapers, I perhaps get another perspective than you lot living in Newcastle. First, I was over the moon when KK came back. I thought that was the beginning of a new golden era, now I'm not so sure, because it seemed obvious, even early in his reign, that his hands were tied. But KK being the man he is, stood up for Ashley and the board and signalled their unity in matters that perhaps weren't without controversies...But I bit me teeth and waited for the end of last season, when KK should get the money and rebuild the squad. He didn't get the money, he could not free himself from the shackles imposed on him (from Llambias, Wise, Vetere, or whoever?). True, the signings so far seems very good (Guthrie, Jonas and Colloccini), not so sure about the two latest ones(have to admit I haven't even heard about them as I, as a principle, only watch Nufc games...), but we had a thin squad, we needed fresh blood, and we had gotten rid of most of the dead wood. What did we do? Bring in more quality, more players to bolster our thin squad? Noooo, we sold Milner, got two in...but, have we now a big, strong squad ready for the oncoming PL battles? No, I'm afraid not. The squad is close to paperthin, the WOW signing is AWOL...Right, we sold Milner. At first I couldn't believe it. We got £12 milion pounds and that wasn't too bad, but Milner always playes with his heart on the sleeve, gave his all. Sometimes it wasn't good enough(sometimes it was), but we loved him, KK surely did, and still he was sold with KK's blessing. And I thought, OK, KK has reluctantly agreed to sell him because he knows there'll be an even better one coming in. Now did it happen? Nah, don't think so. Again, KK really, really wants to make his second stint as a manager work, but his hands seemes tied, he realises that he's not getting the funds or the powers to make his plans come true and that is what really, reeeeeally frustrates him. But if he walks, or if he's sacked, I think the good, honest Geordies (who I truly love and respect!!!), will let their anger and frustration be shown outside SJP and by empty seats within!

Hi Luke, agree that a peacekeeping force will be needed. Said earlier this week that it`ll all come out in the next auto-biography, KK will stick it out for his compensation, and my mates who support Leeds will now be laughing in their non-alcoholic drinks. Sad days for the club, Mike Ashley will now learn the hard way, as those missing 4-5,000 will double in the coming weeks. Good luck to King Kev whatever he decides, he`ll always get a free pint in the Bigg Market.

It does appear to be Llambias who is the problem but its to be expected when you have a giant of the football world with all of his knowledge and experience going head to head with a manager who hasn't won a trophy. After all, who is Kevin Keegan to demand players for the team, where is his track record of building football teams who people might want to pay money to watch? Mr Liambas is a shrewd business man who knows how to make money and we all know that's exactly what the game is all about, isn't it?
The club we love is being kicked all over the pitch and one of our all time heroes is being treated shabbily.
If Mr Ashley wants this business venture to succeed he must realise that it will only be a cash cow if we the real owners of the club have a reason to support it. Right now that reason is Kevin Keegan!

I've never been so depressed, angry and bewildered by the actions of my club.

After the digraceful treatment of Sir Bobby Robson by the previous regime, it seems another football legend - a man with honesty, dignity, passion, experience, popularity, respect and talent who loves the club and has worked hard to push it forward - has been treated with utter contempt.

Whether he is sacked or resigns, Keegan can walk away with his head held high. The same cannot be said of Mike Ashley, who has a virtually impossible task in trying to claw back the support of the fanbase. And make no mistake, he might be a powerful man but he does need the support of the fanbase. Because, this time, I do think people will stay away. They will stop spending money on a club that treats its fans with such outrageous disrespect.

I think he has misjudged many facets of NUFC and it could be his downfall.

There have been inherent errors in the process of buying the club (I didn't realise we owed millions until after I'd bought it), in recruiting directors with seemingly little affinity with modern Premiership football management and even less affinity with NUFC, in undermining the most important man at the club (Kevin Keegan), in thinking investment in proven players was not essential, in failing to set out a clear plan and in continually failing to communicate with fans.

He recently laughed off rumours of contacting a certain Mr Bin Laden. He might want to consider giving him a call now to ask if there's any spare room in that cave.

There is no way back for Mike Ashley now regardless of whether Keegan stays or goes.
He must sell up and get out.

Also, the geordie public need to lose this incessant urge to cling on to heroes of the past. When Sherer was past his best, the Big Al love was sickening and detrimental to the club. Kevin Keegan WAS brilliant and is doing OK as boss this time around, but the truth is that Kevin will never reach the heights with Newcastle like he did in 1996.

The best thing for Newcastle will be for Ashley to sell up as his position is now untenable and for a progressive new boss to be brought in. (Puts tin hat on whilst awaiting a slagging off from the cling ons!)

This is so heartbreaking to watch...Newcastle United being torn to shreds again, MA made the biggest mistake appointed people on the board who would interfere with player recruitment, I like many was disgusted with that useless appointment of wise. I think the only person to stay out of all of them should be tony jimenez solely because he has excellent contacts in spain and this could help us attract quality players. But one thing I have to say is that if derek lamblias and wise are not gone by the hull game i will be seeking a refund on my season ticket and will not go to a single game because i no my money will not put towards helping my club but instead giving more money to that greedy scoundrel (MA).

I want to make a couple of points; Firstly, when wise was appointed it was made clear that he would only help with youth recruitment and not interfere with senior team recruitment, i cannot believe KK has to agree on a shortlist with wise, what does wise know about quality, he is so clueless he wanted to recommend beckford! Jimenez is probably the guy responsible for helping broker the deal for colo, jonas, xisco, not that imbecile wise, and what is lamblia excatly doing -isnt he our chairman- i have to say he is probably the most ineffective chairman in the history of football, i'm not sure what he is doing at our club. MA is just trying to pack the board with his (london) friends, I also have a sneaky suspicion that he let spurs get modric. Ultimately it does not matter what happens now, as in if KK stays, it will too painful to see his morale deteriorate and i wont be able to watch the media tear him to shreds when we are made to look like a joke in the premier league, he is best manager for us and will always be, no one will bring success apart from KK. The relationship with the other board members cannot be resolved, KK was sold yet another pack of lies when he was given this job, he doesnt deserve this, and i hope i will be joined by many in a united front to boycott the hull game until the condition is met that wise and lamblias be sacked (becuase i dont think jimenez is interfering).

Secondly, look at the clubs where the manager is given total autonomy on how to manage their team. A brilliant example is arsenal. Arsene Wenger has been allowed to run the club his way, he signed players he wanted to because it was HIS vision and belief that he could make a good team with them, and their management structure were spot on in letting him do that; just look at all the unknown quantities he has signed and made them into WORLD CLASS footballers, i.e cesc fabregas, henry, pires, overmars, van persie, toure, clicy (is beginning to show real quality) the list goes on, of course some of the players were not cheap but most were and most were unknown, now look at them, if KK was given this chance i have no doubts that he will make us a top four team again, because it is not what players you neccessarily have it is how the team plays together and KK is masterful in achieving success in assembling a team which not only attacks but are united and work for eachother. He has not been given the resources, and to be honest we only got spanked at arsenal becuase so many players were missing otherwise we would have been more than just a test for them. We are inevitably going to finish outside the top ten again and i would not be surprised if some of our key players begin to get disgruntled, we have no direction now and we are badly falling off the pace, Man City as i feared are leaving us behind, and if you look at it their set up is just effective, their stadium is not that much smaller and they will soon be getting capacity crowds, and wages wont be an issue for them, so just exactly what have we got to offer now, we missed out on keeping milner because we were reluctant about giving him more money, well look at some of our high earners, e.g emre (65,000), barton (65,000) they have not contributed anywhere near the same as milner so how can his request be denied. There is something we have to understand now, footballers do not have a long earning capacity, they have to go where they will be better paid because after 30 their prospects are dim. We have to get with the times, we missed out on Aimar because we were being stingy, just imagine if we had got him some craft and guile to our very average looking central midfield. It pains me say this but we wont be successful this season because there is too much going on behind the scenes and we dont have the quality and depth to deal with it like say liverpool could. I just hope its not a complete disaster and we get relegated!

Luke,

There is absolutely not a scintilla of doubt in my mind that it will be a disaster of monumental proportions if Keegan is allowed to go.

The crazy thing here is that it seems like horrible deja vu! It was a someone unknown entity called Mark Corbridge who had joined NUFC as joint chief executive from NatWest Markets in November '96 only 2 months before Keegan departed, who in Kev's own words "was the main architect" of his departure the last time.

Now we have some other non-football individual called Derek Llambias this time with a background of running a 'gambling club' who took over from Chris Mort in June as Managing Director, another 'transient' who appears to be the architect this time.

It is crazy that individuals with absolutely no experience in managing football clubs end up at the helm at NUFC, that truly is a gamble! They never last long but the damage they do can be enormous with the consequence of their actions taking decades to repair!

I just hope Ashley realises this time he is playing Russian Roulette and his gun should be pointed to Llambias. he is the one who should get fired for his incompetence, as he is the man ultimately presiding over the recent contract negotiations and transfer debacles!
