Put That In Your Paper

Posted by Luke on October 3, 2008 2:21 PM |

Rather than expose himself to ridicule, Joe Kinnear may well emerge from his swear-word ridden rant at the press this week with plenty of credit inside the Newcastle United dressing room, as well as on the terraces.

I was lucky enough to be present when Kinnear tore into the daily newspaper pack - not the Journal I hasten to add - and it was remarkable stuff. I've seen some manager dish out some bollockings in my time, but this was extraordinary because of the length of time it went on for and the ferocity with which it started.

It isn't a course of action I would advise for any budding young manager, but when you are an interim manager and you want to create a siege mentality at the club this was a well-thought out tactic. The players, I suspect, will have thoroughly enjoyed hearing about their new manager going on the offensive.

The actual rant wasn't that coherent, but after the details were printed in the media and on all sorts of websites, I think Joe has come out of it pretty much unscathed, if not in a stronger position than before he went into that press conference.

He looks like a man who is willing to stand up for what he believes in, a man who just wants to be given a chance to do a job he has been desperate to get and a man who will always tell it like he sees it. Sometimes they can seem rare qualities in modern football management.

Of course only results will ultimately determine how well he does on Tyneside, but from the people I've spoken to, both Newcastle fans and otherwise, there is a sense that Joe has done the right thing, tackled his critics head on and, in the process, perhaps united a few people behind him.

Quite what sort of success he can achieve in a few weeks is open to considerable question, but it will be interesting to see what sort of response he gets from the players at Everton at the weekend.

One thing is for sure, it isn't going to be dull with Joe f******g Kinnear in charge - sometimes I wonder whether it would be nice if it actually was for a change!

If he can't even make his rant coherent then what on earth makes you think that this was a calculated attempt at creating a siege mentality? In all honesty its just the latest thing that NUFC fans have to be embarrassed about - whichever way you try to spin it.

Note From Luke
Putting a spin on it? I'm just giving my opinion, which might be spin, I'm not sure. I believe there has been a deliberate attempt to create a siege mentality and Joe admitted as much on Thursday. In the circumstances it was about all he could do. I think some fans will be embarrassed by Joe's rant, but there will be others who think he might have had a point. At least he has given the impression he genuinely cares about the job he has been given. Having a manager's rant at the press published isn't a normal state of affairs but this isn't a normal situation is it? Ultimately, I don't think it is damaging to him or the club - not when you compare it to what you've already had to put up with this season.

Joe does not have the time to "develop" a relationship with the s..t stirring elements of the press. What he has to do is quickly get the players on his side.He has taken a massive step in the right direction.Go get em Joe!

When the South African's take over and bring Keegan back, maybe we can keep JFK on as 'Southern Press Officer'

Flood warnings may have to be issued after the dribble that has come out of the London press lately.

I see also the big club tag that they hate to hear with regards to Newcastle sounds silly now that the £300M valuation makes us the biggest (financially) outside of the top four.

It's really a bit sad that anyone over the age of 14 can be impressed by someone swearing a lot. I'm not sure how old Luke is but Kinnear is 61 and really ought to know better, the "no one likes us we don't care stuff" may have worked at the Dons but the world has moved on since then. It wasn't even really a rant, he didn't lose the plot but made calculated decision to swear constantly from the start. Even the actual offence was minor, some slightly bad reporting on a non-story, most managers receive worse treatment than that every week. To make matters worse, the press officer and journalists were ready to wipe it but it was Joe who insisted the world should know how many times he can say f***. Lets face it any old fool can do that but can he manage football team?

Note From Luke
I'm 30 and a quarter Graham. You are, of course, right swearing isn't big or clever. I swear lots, but it doesn't mean I could manage a football team. However, my point is that JK wanted to come out fighting, he wanted to show the players and the fans that he was coming out fighting and the media have, directly or indirectly, willingly conveyed that message for him. He will be judged as a manager on results, just like everyone else, but in a difficult situation he might just be making the best of it. If in four games time Newcastle have still not won a game and are bottom of the table we will know his rant was nothing more than hot air, but let's judge him then!

If he had been defending the club, the players or the fans then you may have a point Luke but the cynic in me wonders whether he's viewing this temporary gig as an opportunity for self promotion. Lets face it, the media haven't been that hard on him.

Well said Luke --Go get em Joe-They have had this coming for a long time its about time some one fought back-I tell you this Luke some of the press pundits on Merseyside have had it in for us for a very long time with their constant jibes of us being a "Big Club" and never having won anything-as though we were not aware we have not won anything since 1969.They blame every managerial casualty on us the fans who have such "High Expectations "-I just wish they would stop and ask us -funny for supporters who have such "High Expectations"we still turn up in our thousands-more to our credit-they just never stop having a go at us so if Joe has told them where to go--good for him.

I think it's about time that someone at the club had a go at the southern press who just see us as easy meat for making up a negative story. Ok, he could have been more eloquent but this is football not ballet dancing and he stood up for the players which is no bad thing in our situation. It will be interesting to see what effect on the performance of the team this all has - but good luck to him as he's having a go and giving it 100% when there were no other takers. The club's in a mess and only he and the current crop of players can get us out of it - howway the lads.

James 09 wrote...

Joe seems like an awfully earnest guy who will do his very best possible for us and for that we should be grateful. The buck for the current situation and beyond ultimately rests with one man – Mike Ashley. Could he run a successful bath at Newcastle United?? No.

If JK gets his 15 out of the next 24 points target - fantastic and I truly hope he does BUT surely there are some major concerns here.......

(1) NUFC are literally in dying need of some semblance of leadership and resilience - on and off the pitch. Yes he may have just executed a wonderful plot to implement a siege mentality. But....he may have also proven what terribly thin skin he has. Thin skin is exactly what NUFC do not need right now.

Can you imagine his reaction if this all goes horribly wrong after 3 games and the "vicious" lot at SJP start bellowing "you don't know what you're doing JFK", "taxi for JFK"? Will it be – ‘which one is a Newcastle supporter?’ Umm we all are, “you’re all c***s.” Brilliant.

(2) JK seemed confused that there were a fair few non-English speaking players in our dressing room. Suggests he may be a little out of touch with today’s Premier League.

(3) Can our squad adapt yet again to another brand of football - anyone care to remember the Crazy Gang's style? I won't raise a single complaint if it works but seriously doubt our squad will be able to successfully play that way - we are far too powder puff and patently lack the necessary team spirit to do so.

(4) This guy is ABSOLUTELY desperate for a job - fair indication of his managerial ability?

(5) Overall, he seems pretty erratic and well a bit lost. This is NUFC, a unique beast – for all the wrong reasons bar one: our supporters. JK said a few days back NUFC are in "no danger whatsoever" of relegation....around 3 days later he comes out with (the truth) that NUFC are currently in a relegation fight. Quite the change of tact there.

(6) On the comical side – can anyone (I mean anyone) imagine Wenger bouncing any ideas off JK?? Maybe regarding garden hedges or even curries but I suspect not football.

Kinnear certainly had a point about some of the reporting since he arrived, but the way he expressed that point has increased the size of the target on his back by about 1000%.

I'm all for allowing people the full range of their expression, as long as it's done eloquently. Unfortunately Joe sounded like a generic villain a naff Guy Richie film, when he could have sounded like Al Swearengen or Tony Soprano.

My take on Joe's rant was, the red-tops have had it coming from NUFC, their whipping boys, for far too long. What I particularly loved about it was when he told them they were on their last chance, and they wouldn't be welcome back at St. James's park again if they continued to slag the club or manager again. That wouldn't make any difference of course because I believe that some of them don't even attend our home games, perhaps even plageurising the journal and chron's reports and dressing it up with a few make-believe facts. Joe told them just what most fans were thinking about them anyway, well done Joe. I've always liked the bloke and he's gone up in my estimation for giving them a verbal slapping. I really hope that his tenure here is successful and he's retained by the new owners as a coach, even if Keegan comes back. Mark Green beat me to it when he said what I was thinking last night, that he should be our southern press-officer, tee-hee. Seriously though, if he is trying to sell himself in the job market, he's succeeded in my book. His manner of communicating to the players e.g. asking Xisco why he wasn't at the end of Duff's crosses etc. is exactly what I want to see from any manager. Not wrapping them up in cotton wool like Souness did, deflecting any blame or criticism after bad games. Come on Joe lad, get some results and stick it up 'em, they don't like it up 'em. As far as criticism of his Wimbledon tactics is concerned, he did very well with what he had. I remember them dumping us out of the cup up here, and being a very tough team to beat away, so hopefully our supposedly better players will provide him with better tools to show his coaching abilities.

Dear luke, any cats that can catch a rat is a good cat regardless of its colour. There is nobody else at the moment. The fan should not be too proud . We are in relegation dog fight.Do not expect Keggan to be back so soon, you are all in dream land. We need to win game. Do not expect so much given the mess we are in.Give Joe some space. If the fan have nothing positive to say , they should shut their trap.
