A Job Well Done

By Luke Edwards on Dec 22, 08 04:47 PM

Newcastle fans will be relieved to know they no longer have to spend the Festive period worrying about the possibility they will attack the next person who wishes them a Merry Christmas.

What a difference a week makes. I head off for a break pondering the possibility Newcastle would be in the bottom three by the time I returned to work and instead the Magpies are up to the heady heights of twelfth spot and someone on my web chat on Monday even mentioned a possible push for a European place.

Ah, yes, the good old Newcastle United rollercoaster, full of stomach twisting highs and stomach churning lows. A couple of defeats and the manager is ready for the sack, but grab a couple of wins and they are better than Fabio Capello (copyright Mike Ashley).

Whatever you think about Joe Kinnear - and his contradictory public comments are not helping anyone regarding Michael Owen's new contract or his expectations ahead of the transfer window - the guys has done a pretty good job.

In his twelve games as a temporary manager Newcastle have lost just two. Considering he arrived at a club wallowing in the relegation zone and devoid of confidence after the battering the club received following Kevin Keegan's sudden and controversial departure, that is impressive.

Alright, so the Magpies have won just four of those 12, but the first objective for a manager coming into a club which is in trouble is to make them hard to beat and Newcastle are unbeaten in six. Not bad for a manager who was employed in desperate circumstances because he was desperate for any route back into management after four years out of the game.

Foul-mouthed rants and two FA disciplinary hearings aside, Kinnear was right on Sunday, he should be proud of the position Newcastle are in. A four point gap between them and the bottom three isn't enough to crack open the party poppers, but it's a big step in the right direction and the wins at Portsmouth and at home to Spurs are worthy of praise.

When you also think that, had the defence not gone to sleep at two set pieces in stoppage time against Wigan and Stoke, Newcastle would have another four points and would be above Everton and just one point worse off than sixth placed Hull City.

I must say the defence, with Sebastien Bassong and Fabricio Coloccini superb, were really impressive against Tottenham. Yes, Spurs looked the better side for long periods in the second half and played the slicker football, but their goal owed much to luck and they rarely got a clear sight of Shay Given because he was so well protected by those in front of him.

I've rarely been able to say that during my time covering the club and for once we should give credit where credit is due. There was a time when Steven Taylor, as promising as he is as a defender, was seen as the best of a bad bunch. Now he can't even get into the starting line up.

The price of progress for the England Under-21 international I suppose. When he was on the pitch against Stoke, Newcastle conceded two goals. In the four games either side of that, with him on the bench, they have conceded just one!

An interesting stat, although I'm in no way suggesting he is a bad player or solely responsible for those goals. It's just evidence he still has some improvements to make before he is the England international in waiting some have suggested.

He will be back in the side eventually, not least because United have no cover for either full back and he is the obvious choice if, God forbid, Bassong or Coloccini pick up an injury. Hopefully the time on the sidelines will benefit him as a player because it is never a bad thing for a young man to spend some time contemplating things on the bench.

For all of the new optimism released by back-to-back wins, Newcastle remain a club in turmoil in many respects and Ashley doesn't help himself by continuing to give dubious interviews to national newspapers (see above comment).

There is still a lack of any long term planning and a lack of commitment from those who put themselves in charge of running the club and, in some respects, Newcastle are incredibly lucky not to be in even more trouble than they are this season given the disastrous handling of the Keegan affair and the lack of necessary activity in the transfer market in the summer.

The latter can be put right next month, but as I keep saying, don't expect Kinnear to spend big money. The best I'm hoping for is the arrival of Jimmy Bullard and a new left back, but I'm sure you have your own thoughts about who should be signing up in January.

Jimmy Bullard? You got inside info on that Luke?

He'd be top signing! We despratley need a creative midfielder who can pass the ball!

Owengate ... Owen is well within his rights to take his time before committing himself to us again. Let's face it, our club is a SHAMBLES. We have an owner who is a disgrace - we don't want him and he doesn't want to be here any more - and we have a manager that Leeds wouldn't have considered a serious job applicant less than 6 months ago. Michael Owen is still one of the top 4 English strikers - despite what Capello might think - and we are not a top English club any longer, and haven't been since Saint Bob was prematurely kicked out. Michael has never been anything but reasonable with us as far as I can see, and he isn't being unreasonable now. If we sort ourselves out - and that means ASHLEY OUT - he may well stay. If we don't, why the hell should we expect him to?

I would just like to thank Joe K for saving our season. I think he's done a magnificent job in stabalising the club, Trying everything to get Owen signed up and bringing on Bassong, great job Joe. If he can persuade a decent midfielder to join us in Jan I would be well pleased, a left back would be great also.

Hey Luke, you can have some festive cheer (and sunshine from me in a very humid Durban, SA) - what a difference a month makes - so much optimism on Tyneside.
I think it shows us what a decent defence could have achieved for us this season; but more than happy with the mad Irishman (and not that plonker Roy Keane).
What`s the talk on the ground vs Wigan ? Still would have liked to see MOans linked up with Heskey (reckon that would have been a good partnership for us). Still think it`s good news that MOans is not going in the January window; news on Jamie Bullock would be good, but hear that Spurs are also in with a bid.
Maybe you should start a blog on 'red cards' as this is going to have a major effect over the Festive Season results (methinks).

Joe has done really well and the players have responded to him and thats the main thing.
Owen has done the sensible thing, until the club is settled either way I would have done the same in his position.
Speaking of that I think Ashley should come back to the fore front of things, Yes he got it wrong but how many fans wanted Freddie out so stop complaining. He has invested heavily and if he keeps a low profile I do not have a problem with that.
I love Keegan but a man that walks three times out of a club has no credible way back. If we all left our jobs every time we were miffed we would be changing jobs every other week. He could have stayed but told Ashley they could not hide behind him and told the fans about the situation, we could then have applied the outside pressure to turn Ashley around. Any way good luck to Joe and his Merry Men

Hi Luke

Heskey would be a good signing to link up with Martins or Owen
Bullard, much better option than Barton and for creativity what has happened with Elano, he looked terrific the last time I saw him play?

Merry Xmas to All
Cheers
Mike

A Newcastle team that works for each other? Surely my eyes are deceiving me. Yet this is the strange sight I have seen for the last few games.

And all credit must go to JFK for getting some kind of team spirit going. We're not out of the woods yet but I've seen enough to suggest we should be OK. A lot of the teams that struggled at the start are getting momentum now: Us, Spurs, the mackems, probably Blackburn now. I'd be looking at the likes of Pompey, Man City, West Ham as teams to join West Brom in the scrap.
