Ashley Is No Angel And Neither Is Michael Owen
We put our Christmas tree up in our front room yesterday to finally provide some Festive cheer at chez Edwards, but for some reason I'm still struggling to get into this season of goodwill thing.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact one of my friends is seriously ill in hospital at the moment, perhaps it is due to work pressure, maybe it is simply due to the fact the outlook for the rest of the football season in the North East is particularly bleak.
It was only as the rather chunky angel was impaled on the top of our ridiculously large tree which has swamped our living room that it occurred to me that said angel bore a passing resemblance to a certain Mike Ashley.
Spiky sharp thing inserted into backside of United's billionaire owner! Hmmm, now there's a thought which may have flashed across the minds of most Newcastle supporters during this winter of discontent.
This is going to be a difficult Festive period for Newcastle in a difficult season, particularly if they lose at Portsmouth this weekend. Newcastle have not won away in the league since the 4-1 destruction of Tottenham back in March, but they desperately need to get something from the long trip to the south coast after the draw with Stoke.
With Tottenham and Liverpool to visit St James's Park over Christmas, sandwiched either side of a trip to Wigan on Boxing Day (another Newcastle bogey ground) it is impossible to look at any of the games and say they should yield three valuable points.
With the transfer window due to open on January 1st, Joe Kinnear's side must make the best out of a bad situation, battle and scrap their way through the next four games and hope they are still above the relegation zone when the wheeling and dealing gets underway in the New Year.
Kinnear has indicated this week that money will be made available to him by the board, but I still wonder about that. It wouldn't surprise me if the only new arrivals at St James's Park are loan signings. As far as we know, Ashley is still looking to sell, which will mean Kinnear has no long term authority, which may mean temporary signings are all that are available to him.
We shall just have to wait and see. I don't really have to say it again, but I will anyway, if Newcastle do not strengthen the squad in January relegation beckons. They might just about cling on - as long as they get some better luck with injuries - but, from past experience, it's best not to rely on good fortune whenever Newcastle are concerned.
What annoys me - and I'm sure it's the same for the rest of you - is that, despite the continued uncertainty and troubles, nobody other than Kinnear has given us any sort of indication as to what is happening with the sale of the club, whether it is still going ahead and what will happen if it's not going to go through in the next few weeks or months?
The silence, as ever, with Ashley's regime is deafening, despite an appeal from the Newcastle United Supporters Club (NUSC) for information and a sensible dialogue about the situation.
The mood has not been a particularly angry one in recent weeks, but if the necessary measures are not taken in January, that will change very quickly indeed...
As for Michael Owen, the little striker apparently accused me of spinning a story last weekend when I said he would not sign a new contract because he had other options in January. Seven days later and Kinnear has admitted he will not because, as I said last weekend, he has other options.
Kinnear had already hinted as much at his pre-Stoke press conference and my sources have been telling me for months that Owen had no intention of signing a new contract - not that one had been offered mind.
But, while United's other out-of-contract players are due to sign next week, according to Joe, Owen will not be because he has other clubs interested. I don't blame him for wanting to abandon ship, but there is so much spin in modern football it makes you dizzy.
I'm off work next week so Stuart Rayner will be doing the webchat on Monday. I'm back for the Spurs game though so will be in touch again then.

Hi Luke. You are right Luke --Not much fetive cheer for us toon fans. FACT Ashley has no intention of spending any money Joe is a fool if he thinks otherwise .FACT Michel owen will not sign another contract -He may blame instability at the club for that decision -but as we all know its much more than that -try telling Steven Taylor that yarn and find out his response -stevie boy is like the great Alan shearer -he would run through a brick wall for the toon -he is one of us. well we certainly got a good one in Ashley -He has no idea how to communicate -his decisions have been dross since he arrived and it will take a miracle -and a long time for the toon to recover from this mans disastrous ownership.
Luke
No wonder you are taking a week off: The headaches in Newcastle must be worse than any hangover.
Hate to say this, but months ago, long before the trouble started, I warned about Ashley's REAL intentions at NUFC. He's a businessman, not a football man. The bottom line is his God.
Have a good rest. January is just around the bend.
Aaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!!
We need to keep Michael Owen after his display against Pompey, but I have noticed that all the BBC pundits are praising him up now instead of saying he's not the same player he used to be. It would seem inevitable that he'll leave sooner rather than later.... For all I'm black & white through and through, I'd probably leave now too if a properly run club were to come in for me.
Once again aaaaaaaaargh!!!
Merry Christmas one and all.... except that stupid captcha
as long as owen doesn't leave in january, or sign a pre-contract agreement with another club, i'll be happy. can't expect him to sign an extension here with no idea of what's going to happen with the club, but if he's still here and things are sorted out and looking up before the end of the season then maybe he'll stay...
If a couple of canny signings can help push NUFC up the table and help a sale then Ashley may make them. As, Kinnear is talking about £10-12 for two experienced PL players (Upson and Warnock??) then I could see it happening.
As for Michael Owen, who can hazard a guess? it looks doomed to go wrong whatever happens but they key thing to remember is that he still lives in the North West.
Owen must be sick of hearing that that he is leaving everytime he turns on the TV. Since he arrived he has been leaving according to the media so I wouldn't feel to upset Luke. I think he has bundled you in with the rest of the mob. But as it has been mentioned no information leads to continuous speculation.
