I Might Need A Swear Box

By Luke Edwards on Dec 8, 08 12:10 PM

Before I launch into another diatribe about Newcastle United's ridiculously under-equipped first team squad I would like state, once and for all, that there was absolutely no way Sebastien Bassong should have been penalised for the foul which led to Stoke City's injury-time equaliser.

I have watched it time and time again over the weekend and if that was a foul then football is a non-contact sport. And, do you know what, I would have sworn at the linesman who gave it and I would have complained to the referee and, like Joe Kinnear, I would have been sent off because I would have been angry and upset and, and, well I'd have probably thrown a tantrum about it.

Ultimately, although Newcastle's defence should have dealt with the free-kick and it was shocking they didn't, the fact remains that incorrect decision to award it ended up costing United a vital win which would have finally put a bit of breathing space between themselves and the bottom three.

It was the second home game in a row that Newcastle had conceded an injury-time equaliser to a former defender - Titus Bramble's for Wigan and now Abdoulaye Faye's for Stoke - and that's four dropped points - points that, had they been secured, would mean Newcastle were up to eleventh in the table, just three points off seventh place and possible Uefa Cup qualification! Depressing huh? Anyone swear yet? I did again.

Not only that, but Kinnear's liking for the odd obscenity means he will probably be forced to serve a three or four game touchline ban as well as pay a hefty fine for improper conduct. Let's not forget, the authorities are already upset he called another referee, Martin Atkinson, Mickey Mouse, after the Fulham defeat last month.

It was actually Chris Hughton who did most of the swearing last Saturday - I was watching the incident closely - but by the time the linesman turned round to see who was shouting at him, Kinnear had appeared from the dugout and was joining in.

It was interesting to note on Saturday night that Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer argued long and hard about whether Hull City's winning penalty against Midddlesbrough should have been given, whether the contact was deliberate or not, whether Giovanni had gone down too easily etc etc. For me, the decision which went against Newcastle was far harsher.

However, while poor decisions are infuriating and costly, Newcastle only had themselves to blame for the loss of points. They were dreadful in the second half and Kinnear failed spectacularly to cope with the loss of Danny Guthrie. Tactically the team were shoddy after the break and were unable to retain possession long enough to disrupt Stoke's momentum as they looked to force their way back into the game.

Kinnear didn't have many options available to him, but he could have put Mark Viduka on earlier, either pushed Michael Owen back into midfield or played Obafemi Martins wide on the right. He could have switched to a 4-3-3 formation. As it was, Habib Beye went on to the right side of midfield and barely touched the ball and Newcastle were left to cling on grimly to the two goal advantage Owen had given them in the first half.

If the loss of one player can cause so much disruption to the side, I dread to think what is going to happen over the next few weeks. I've said it before but I will say it again and again and again and again until it happens. Newcastle must invest in players in January, I repeat MUST invest in new players in January if they are going to stay up. I don't care if nobody likes him or can even tolerate him on Tyneside, Mike Ashley has to protect his investment.

The failure to win home games against the likes of Wigan and Stoke is a massive setback when you look at the wider context of the campaign. Newcastle still have to play Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool at St James's this season and they could, it's reasonable to suggest, fail to take a single point from those matches.

Of the Big Four, they only have to visit Liverpool, but when you haven't won an away game in the league all season it is unlikely you're suddenly going to start collecting loads of precious points on the road. The home form will be vital and it hasn't been anywhere near good enough so far.

Since the excellent 2-0 win against Aston Villa at the start of November, Newcastle have taken four points from a possible 15. They are out of the bottom three and have gone four games unbeaten, but look as if they could be dragged back into the mire at any point over a Festive period which threatens to be anything but for United fans.

Newcastle travel to Portsmouth and Wigan, and entertain Tottenham and Liverpool before the New Year. By my reckoning they need to take at least six points from these four game if they are going to start 2009 outside of the bottom three.

Oh and don't get me started on Owen's contract situation. Player says he hasn't been offered anything, manager says he's been told by agent he has no intention of meeting before January when they can also talk to rival clubs.

A chaotic, confused, joyless, muddled, depressing mess. That just about sums it up really. Yep, just swore again...

Well summed up, I couldn't disagree with any of that. The fact we ended up with six defenders on the pitch at the end is bizarre and surely was just inviting pressure. Had we been holding out for a draw as we did at Chelsea, I'd understand. But 2-0 up at home was a baffling choice of reorganisation.

I would've had Viduka on for Guthrie, pushed N'Zogbia inside and had Jonas & Martins on the flanks according to where Jonas wanted to play.

The other thing I don't understand is why Cacapa came on in midfield. Surely one of the young'uns should be given a chance in such circumstances, and if, as has been suggested, they aren't good enough then they should be released because frankly if our young centre-midfielders are worse than centre-back Cacapa in midfield, then it doesn't say much for our reserves and academy. (I suspect however, that isn't the case and that any of them would've done a better job.)

To echo your demands for signings, Luke - surely we should be trying to get some loan signings in. If Ashley doesn't want to spend too much, shouldn't we be trying to get some end-of-season loans?

Finally, I just wanted to comment on the appauling treatment of Emmanuel Eboue by Arsenal fans on Saturday. I certainly hope that the pockets of discontent aimed at some of our players never gets to this stage. If Arsenal don't want him - I'd be happy to see him here - played in his correct position, unlike Saturday.

Excellent piece Luke.

In summary: a paper thin squad (but I still wouldn't swap it for Sunderland's); a mediocre (at best) Manager (upset he might have been, but he's f*ck all use to us sat in the stands); and a bunch of complete tw@ts running the club. I honestly cannot remember a time when there was so little (nothing?) for us to turn to for even the slightest whiff of optimism.

If Ashley doesn't get it by now - he needs to spend or we're dead, and Kinnear has to be allowed to pick the signings - he never will. And I don't think he does get it. I think we'll be more surpised by who leaves in January than by who comes in.

Come May 2009, 4th from bottom will be an outstanding achievement.

I am praying that we hang on to a 4th from bottom slot!!!!!

Kevin Keegan's not going to help the transfer kitty by suing the club! How ironic!

Emmanuel Eboue would be a great signing for Newcastle in January Sy. Like you, I couldn't believe what I was heard on Match of the Day on Saturday. It was incredible that supporters who get to watch the most attractive side in the country every other week should turn so terribly on one of their own players. He was in tears as he left the pitch. I'm not normally someone who feels sorry for Premier League footballers but that was one of the worst treatment I've seen. Unbelievable!

I've just read something you wrote last week. Nevermind what that so called NUFC spokesman said, the large majority of Newcastle fans will not forgive Ashley. If he sacks Wise, begs Keegan to come back, gives him total transfer control and a wad of cash to spend - maybe. But even then I doubt it.

Luke - Am I the only one who thinks having so many defenders on against Stoke should increase the chance of holding onto a 2 goal lead not diminish it?

Hi Luke,

agree with the sentiments that we will be more suprised by what leaves the club in the transfer window, than what comes in. Fear that could lose Nicky Butt who has been a good, classy professional for us, and I dread to think loss of Shay Given. Reckon if Everton still have a outside cace of Europe will make a bid for Michael Owen. Together this will nett Mike (c)Ashley close to ten million, and then we`ll get some PR story that we are trying real hard up to the deadline hour and bring in some more Capaca`s of this world !!!

We're a desperately poor squad with some players not fit for the Premier League.
We've got a manager who's tactically clueless and is a complete embarrassment not only to the club, but to himself as well and an inability to stop poor teams taking points from us.
Relegation form indeed. I already fear the worst. That 2nd half performance was worthy of Championship football, but Mike Ashley says Kinnear's going to be given £12million to spend. He'll buy more tripe and land us further in trouble, then he'll blame referees instead of himself. Come March when we play Man Utd, Arsenal & Chelsea in consecutive home games, we'll be ****ed. He reminds me of Souness for his temper and his shocking style of football

I agree the free-kick was never a foul, but bearing in mind some of the other soft free-kicks that skinny little runt gave on Sat, I'm not terribly surprised. What surprised me was that there were 5 defenders in or around the 6 yard box, but Faye still had acres of space to score.
Next up Portsmouth.... I'd be happy with another draw!!!

Honeymoon period over. January approaches and MA will be selling up the squad - you watch. If he cant make his zillions selling the club then he will recoup his outlay by selling our best players in January, with the excuse it was all Bosman's fault. But you know in a sense it might be a good thing. This club has badly deteriorated since Sir Bobby was sacked - Gee whizz look at what that guy actually acheived!. To be honest we stink....you make your own luck in footie matches, Stoke should have been put to the sword when winning 2-0. Hmmm a good dose of life in the Championship might just be what the doctor orders!!...
