Newcastle United Have Reached Boiling Point
I thought for a minute someone was trying to be funny about Newcastle United when I stepped into the corridor at work and was greeted by a cry of "Going Down" but I don't think lifts have a sense of humour!
I don't suppose many United fans have got much of one at the moment either, the situation is far too grave for that. Relegation has been a constant worry this season, but things have never looked as bad as this. There is no money, no players and, increasingly, no hope of salvation.
Rarely, if ever, have I felt as depressed, dismayed and anxious about Newcastle's prospects as I was on the return journey from Manchester City on Wednesday night.
The defeat against a distinctly ordinary City side was bad enough, but the loss of Joey Barton and Michael Owen to long term injuries was even more significant in terms of the club's battle against relegation.
We have been banging on about a small squad for months, but Wednesday night took things to another, far more worrying level. It is panic stations time. Sadly, I'm still not convinced the likes of Mike Ashley, Derek Llambias and Dennis Wise realise!
Throughout this troubled times I have always felt, the one thing that made Newcastle stronger than the other sides in danger of the drop, was the presence of Owen. A world class striker who scores goals at a ratio of one every other game. It was his goals, I thought, which more than anything else, would keep the Magpies in the top flight.
Instead, with Owen expected to be sidelined for two months with an ankle injury, Newcastle's survival hopes could rest with a striker who cannot score goals, Alan Smith and one who never looks fit, Mark Viduka. Neither, of course, are fit yet, but they soon will be, God willing (Yes, it's even got that bad, I'm turning to religion!)
On Sunday, in the derby against Sunderland, Newcastle's strikeforce is likely to be a player who had, before an innocuous run out against City, played nine minutes of first team football this season - Peter Lovenkrands - and a centre- forward who is so raw he would be blue if you cut him open - Andy Carroll.
For me, the farcical situation at the top of Newcastle United was summed up by Kinnear on Wednesday night when he said he had only one fit striker available for the Sunderland game, Carroll.
What on earth does that say about Xisco, signed for almost £6m by Dennis Wise against Kevin Keegan's wishes? And what does that say about Lovenkrands, the player Kinnear fought so hard to bring in? Both are fit and available after all. Unbelievable, I'll say it again, unbelievable!
As for Barton, what goes around comes around I suppose, but he was the driving force in midfield against City on his first start for almost three months and now he will be in the treatment for another three months because of a broken metatarsal! He has done some bad things in his life, so maybe it's just karma (more religious references) but tough break (no pun intended) on the lad.
At least Nicky Butt is back from suspension, I suppose, but a centre midfield of Fabricio Coloccini and him doesn't inspire much confidence does it? Then again, what does these days as far as Newcastle United are concerned!
Finally, there are some out there who are trying to knock our forthcoming question and answers session with Llambias and other members of the Newcastle board.
Granted it is far from ideal and it is certainly long overdue, but ultimately how many other chairman or board members at Premier League clubs are willing to attend a supporters' club meeting and answer questions direct from the floor? They don't at Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, Everton, Manchester United, Aston Villa etc etc.
We are trying to make the best of a bad situation so if you want to ask a question please follow the links on the Journal or Chronicle websites and email them in. Trust me, we will not be taking it easy on anyone and as many questions will be asked as possible.

erm... Obafemi Martins anybody?
Picked up 18 pts with him, only 5 without him. More effective than Michael Owen who genuinely smacks of being bothered about himself and no one else. Captain? Ridiculous. I've seen NO fight from him.
It is either buy some decent players or go down.
Yeah alright, so there is Obafemi Martins as well!
I genuinely can't wait for your Q&A with Llambias, Luke. I just hope the answers aren't all fence-sitting and avoidance-driven. I sent a few in the other day, but I suspect that the level of duplication in submitted questions will be high. I've always been the typical optimistic Mag, but it's all gone. I'm not saying that I don't care anymore or that my time as a Newcastle fan is up. Far from it, I'm completely desperate for us to stay up and see Sunday's game as an absolute must win, but I'm very quickly getting used to the idea of us going down. There is absolutely no confidence in our cobbled-together team, the injuries continue to curse us.
As for tactics, surely Kazenga should have started on the right yesterday - Geremi was virtually invisible. And if Jonas was fit enough to play 60-70 minutes, he should've started too. And another thing - why can't Newcastle ever attack until they're behind?
Andrew makes an excellent point about Oba Martins too. He's far more important to us than people give him credit for. I just hope he gets fit quickly and stays fit for the rest of the season.
Sorry for the long post, Luke. Quite a few thoughts to get off my chest. God only knows what we've got in store come Sunday - they're the biggest three points of our season and we'd better get them...or else?
---Sky Sports are reporting that Newcastle have agreed a fee with Bolton for Kevin Nolan.
Kevin Nolan is a very good signing.
Makes up for us not signing Bullard - I would have taken Nolan over him. And both over Mbia.
Now let's land that Toulouse fullback. And getting a striker in on loan wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Please please let there be some light at the end of this long dark tunnel. (And no jokes about it being a train coming towards us!)
PS. Great that the Chron and the Journal have got the Q&A session. I can't believe any fan wouldn't agree - we've been crying out for communication from the club, and I know you Luke (at least) will ask them the questions that need to be asked.
It has been a tight league so far but now things are at the stage where a group of 5 clubs will soon be cut adrift to slog it out between them for 2 survivala slots. My 5 picks are WBA, Stoke, Boro, Toon and Hull. It will not surprise me if both Boro and Toon go down along with Hull (they had a good try). Wy those teams is because they look the ones totally devoid of ideas.
Some time back I said Toon looked like "doing a Leeds" and that is entirely possible.
The Sunderland players are probably sensing blood and bursting to get at it on Sunday. One can only imagine what Cisse will do if he get change to run at the goal!
If Luke does have god on his side a draw might be possible.
Yes Luke, Oba Martins. Sometimes, for a man who professes to be an expert of NUFC, you sound like a Maccam.
As for Owen. Since he announced he "wasn't not signing" for United, he's been like the old lady sitting in the middle of the downstairs of a double decker bus. Nobody notices her except the yobboes like Man City's defence.
He's no captain - that job should have been gien to Beye (before his injury) and then on to Collocini - players who - although foreign, go out and FIGHT for NUFC.
We may well go down, Owen WILL LEAVE anyway.
Good riddance.
What about Shola, has Luke forgotten about him? I don't see how he can criticize Kinnear for forgetting Xisco when he forgets players who have been at the club for years. The squad isn't that small, there are only 15 league games to play over four months, its daft to use it as an excuse. Fair enough it's not the size of Man Utd's but no smaller than relegation rivals.
I'm pretty sure Luke was talking about strikers who are fit and available for selection. Oba and Shola are both still injured.
For Restless Native
Fear not young man. There is light at the end of the long, bleak tunnel. It's called the "Stadium of Light". You won't find any problems at board or management level. And you'll find that the playing staff can actually play.
Just a thought.
I'm just going to nip down to the nearest sports shop to purchase a batsman's gonad protection box and an umbrella.
