Put A Sock In It

By Luke Edwards on Jan 9, 09 12:39 PM

Do you ever just wish people would get on with their jobs and keep their mouths shut? Yeah, alright, smarty pants, that doesn't include me. I'm talking about Keith Harris.

According to the merchant banker - nope that isn't Cockney rhyming slang - the man in charge of selling Newcastle United, he could have sold the club but he didn't because of the global recession. That's is a bit like me saying I could have bought that brand spanking new Aston Martin, but I didn't because I couldn't afford it - pointless

Yeah, fair enough Keith, you could have sold it but ultimately you failed to do so and Newcastle are going to be lumbered with Mike Ashley for the foreseeable future so why don't you just get on with trying to find a buyer, rather than banging on about the fact you almost did.

The thing that annoyed my about Harris, the former chairman of the Football League, is that whenever he spoke on the progress of the sale he contradicted himself. One minute there was loads of interest, next there was no hope because of the global economic downturn. And why does he feel the need to talk about such things so much anyway?

I don't expect my bank manager to tell my next door neighbour about how many people have been to look at my house, so why should Ashley expect Harris to become a rent-a-quote regarding Newcastle.

Then again, when the club's owner - as well as managing director Derek Llambias - refuse to communicate directly with supporters through the media I suppose there wasn't much of an alternative.

However, why did Harris feel the need to talk about the sale issue now when Ashley has already said he has taken the club off the market? In fact, if I didn't know any better, I'd even suggest Harris was stirring things up by saying United's owner had only taken the club off the market out of necessity rather than a genuine desire to stay in control.

We all suspected that anyway, but we don't need a banker from London putting his spin on things in an attempt to justify his own dealings.

Anyway, back to football matters. Another weekend and another must win game for Joe Kinnear's team. However, with pantomime villain Kieron Dyer making his first return to St James's Park since he left the club in August 2007, at least there will be an entertaining sideshow.

The Hammers have three former Newcastle players in their midst - although Craig Bellamy and Scott Parker will almost certainly sign for Manchester City this month - but I think it's safe to assume Dyer will be given the roughest ride of the trio.

It will be, however, a warm reception he will revel in after 17 months of injury problems.

I agree with everything you say Luke except the slight contradiction whereby the only information we get as to why the sale is not happening is from Harris. This bunkum from Ashley about 'going forward in 09' has been well and truly flattened by Harris saying it's because he's lost a few bob in the current financial climate (diddums) so I'm glad he spoke in a funny sort of way. If he asked a reasonable price, we'd be rid of the fat fool and his cohorts. For those who say he saved us (usually other teams fans who insist on commenting on our forums - why do they do this if we're not a 'big club'?)I say nonsense. His revenge mission has taken us back years and he isn't finished yet. With the manager, the board and the personnel available (or to return one day)it's bleak times for us with no hope in sight. The only way to fight this is to boycott the club, lock stock and barrel because blind faith has failed to deliver for the last 30 years and now just makes us laughable to the football community.

Harris is making a fuss now and telling the supporters is because he wants a ground swell of hatred to convince Ashley he should still sell because he is not liked. Maybe the fat lad thinks he has once again become popular. Harris wants to sell for his commision which will not be small. This reiterates that football is big business and the feelings and desires of the fans is of little significance. Newcastle isn't a peoples club anymore and never will be again, thats a fact and the road to ruin.

PEOPLE NEED TO WAKE UP...
We have constantly been fed a continual barrage of lies by Ashley and his cronies.
Ashley famously contradicted himself in the match magazine in September as well as his lies about his family being threatened, the Chronicle exposed Wise's lies that he was "here to help and serve UNDER Kevin Keegan", Harris has told lies about selling the club as revealed by Luke, Kinnear has come up with guff that he will be here for 6 to 8 games and that Keegan and/or Shearer were set to step into the managers job, a famous unscrupulous unnamed football agent has recently appeared on Sky Sports News saying that Ashley was signing at least 5 players , one of who is a current England international......
The list goes on.
If you cant see that Ashley and his gang are taking the micky out of the geordie public (yes, I mean you), I really do feel sorry for you.
Ashley will strip the club of its assetts and replace them with cheap free signings (watch for N'Zogbia being replaced by Lovenkrands and the money disappearing into a certain somebodies back pocket).

I'm not putting another bean into supporting NUFC until this vile regime of compulsive liars and con men have gone from the club.

Tony ... you're wrong, Ashley is FAR worse than ANY of his predecessors. Unfortunately, it is fans like you - who accept being treated with total contempt by Ashley's regime and yet still blindly pour money into his pockets - who will be to blame when this bunch of idiots are still in charge this time next year, and beyond.

I don't consider it loyal to follow the club blindly at the moment; I consider it stupid. The loyal thing to do is to fight for the future of the club, OUR club, by doing whatever it takes to kick Ashley, Llambias, Wise, Kinnear and the rest of the lying scum out of the door. Sadly, only money matters to these people. So the only effective means of protest for the fans is to withold our financial support.
