Newcastle Must Be United To Stay Up
I decided to let the dust settle on Newcastle's defeat to Arsenal and subsequent slide into bottom three because I didn't want to get all emotional and drop tears on to my keyboard, but it doesn't look any better now than it did on Sunday morning does it?
The fear of relegation has haunted United ever since Kevin Keegan stomped off into the distance mumbling about his lack of control of transfers, but perhaps only now do we fully appreciate the danger the club is in.
It really doesn't matter what you think about Mike Ashley, Derek Llambias and that irritating little so and so Dennis Wise. The only thing I've been able to think about these last few days is the complete and utter meltdown of a football club.
To be honest, at the moment, it really doesn't matter who owns it, who manages it, even who plays for it. It's just about survival, that most primal of instincts.
Survival is all that matters, getting enough points, any way and which way they can to get themselves out of the bottom three. It can be ugly, it can be scrappy, it can be dirty, it really doesn't matter.
If Newcastle go down the rest of the country will laugh themselves silly - some may even laugh so hard that a little bit of wee comes out - but it will not only be disastrous for every single United fan, it will be disastrous for the city it calls home.
What people who have never lived up here do not realise is that Newcastle United is the heartbeat of the city. If it is strong and healthy, the city thrives, economically, socially and psychologically. If it is weak and struggling, the city suffers accordingly.
It is no coincidence that Newcastle , metaphorically speaking, exploded when Kevin Keegan breathed life back into the football club in the early 90s. It regained its swagger, it confidence and its determination. It became the modern city it is today.
There are eight games left this season, eight games which should be regarded as the most important in the club's history since Keegan prevented the club from sliding into what is now League One back in 1992.
For make no mistake, if Newcastle drop into the Championship I wouldn't rule out the possibility of them plunging down to those depths once more. It could happen, look at Manchester City, look at Leeds United, look at Nottingham Forest, Leicester and, this season, take a long hard look at Charlton.
Some of those clubs are smaller than Newcastle, but some are of a similar size. The alarm bells are ringing and they won't be stopping any time soon.
The international break may have come at a good time. It will give the players time to regroup, sort themselves out and go again. Chris Hughton is clearly struggling as a manager, but the players are still there to get the club out of trouble.
They are not too good to go down, but they are good enough to stay up. But they need help, they don't need to be booed when they come on as a substitute as Shola Ameobi was against Arsenal and they don't need to be booed when they make a mistake as Fabricio Coloccini was against the Gunners.
As for Joe Kinnear, he may not be able to take charge of the team on a matchday until May. But hopefully just his presence at the training ground will provide better leadership. Is he the man for the job long term? I don't think so, but Steve Bruce could be and he will come to Newcastle if he is asked in the summer. That though is for the future, JFK is needed in the short term.
This is the time, as those ambitious people at NUSC have said this week, for Newcastle United to be just that, United. Once they are safe, then we can start debating ownership and management issues again. We'll have all summer to do so!
Finally, I know some of you will be wanting to know what I thought about Obafemi Martins' performance against Arsenal given my recent blog. Well he scored one and generally played well, but how different would that game have been had he tucked away that penalty?
Another mixed bag from the unpredictable Nigerian, but I'd still say it was a vast improvement. More of the same and who knows, he might just be worthy of that hero worship after all!!

Would those be tears of laughter then Luke seeing as how you are a leyton orient fan?
Ha, trying to stir things up are we Mackem! I'd hate to see Newcastle go down for a variety of reasons, most of which our outlined above. I also have no desire to go to Blackpool ever again!
Anyway, Orient could still go down this season. A rather annoying home defeat to Walsall last weekend means we ain't safe yet!
I hate being negative but if we had of had a good manager on the sidelines then i think the Arsenal game would have been very different (if Oba scored the penalty or not). I can't imagine what the half time team talks are like but the second half seems to be gash these days and where does that come from? A team can motivate itself for the start of the game because the players have had the whole week to think about it, train towards it and build themselves up for it.
After a first half of giving your all you need some inspiration to go again - you are physically and emotionally tired and its very difficult to keep going. The team needs a leader (and a midfield) but more so a leader with fight and battle and a little bit of tactical nouse. For if we had of come out in the second half and played the way we did in the first half then we'd not find ourselves in this situation. I feel i have totally wasted my time writing this because its obvious and what is also obvious is that a fans opinion no longer counts for anything.
Its a sorry state we find ourselves in, but what can we do? Are we really expected to show pride and support the team to survive? The players dont show fight so why should we? Or shall we do it for 45 mins? No I think we can fight and i think we should - if we can do it then they can do it right? Someone has to lead the team, well there are 52,000 of us that can do it as 1. We need to stop the booing, we need to put comments about the d*ckhead that runs this club to 1 side and we need to support our team. We used to be the 12th man - lets do it again!!!
Super piece Luke, really superb.
But do you REALLY believe Bruce would come in the summer with Ashley as owner ... is he actually as daft as he looks?! I hope so!

Unfortunately the above could have been said by ashley, llambas, wise kinnear, hughton or any of the players. The fact is that supporters have been banging on for weeks now about how we are likely to be relegated unless we pull our socks up. We beat west brom and all of the above seemed to think that we were safe and were heading for the top half of the league. The players talk a good game but it's about time they did their talking on the pitch and justified the ridiculous wages they are all being paid.
The club is an absolute shambles. It is run by either people who have no idea of running a football club (llambas) or people who have never succeeded at anything at the highest levels. Would kinnear, wise, hughton or calderwood be employed by any other premier league team?
The odds are now against us getting out of this mess - but hopefully we will. Even if we do, however, if Ashley is going to continue with his present strategy (appointing his mates) then things aren't likely to improve anyway.
Hi Lee-I could not agree more about your article. The problem is we are down there because the tables dont lie. With the present structure -Houghton,Calderwood,doing the tactics and coaching we look completely lost- I cant think what will eventually happen to us with Ashley and Llambias in control. Lets go back just a little -the season started so well -we ths fans knew after last season King Kev would have the team playing proper football hence the great start at Old Trafford -compare that with now -if we went to Old Trafford -guess we can all guess the result. It does not matter what we the fans say or do Ashley remains with his clueless crew-I can only see things getting worse-Oh what might have been.
Doom Doom Were all Doomed
Shearer's boss for the rest of the season!!!!!
It'son Football365, The Sun,etc. ... why isn't it on here yet?
So much for Thompson House being "in the tent" with Ashley and Llambias now.
I've been working on this story since 7pm Mr Restless and have stuff to do for the paper as well you know. Stop complaining and enjoy misery guts!
Ha ha. Nice comeback. I don't expect your homourless colleage at the 'other place' will be quite as amusing in his retort. Although, to be fair, The Chron did manage a one-liner shortly after I placed the same post ...
You could have got one of your monkeys to put a one-liner on the Journal site. I don't believe anything to do with NUFC until I've seen it in writing from you Luke ... made for a 'restless' night. See what I did there? Journo material?
Shearer ... you've always been brave ... and we won't forget your bravery in deciding to come back now and putting your reputation on the line. Best of luck bonny lad.
