Barry Moat Rides To Newcastle's Rescue We Hope

By Luke Edwards on Aug 5, 09 11:29 PM

Is this the sliver of light at the end of the darkest of tunnels? Is this the knight in shining armour riding over the hill to the rescue?

Having apparently done little more than raise expectations and then crush them, Seymour Pierce, the bank in charge of the sale of Newcastle United are set to recommend that a bid fronted by local businessman Barry Moat is accepted by Mike Ashley.

That recommendation is expected to come in the next 48 hours, although that does not necessarily mean we are playing the end game. False dawns are an all too regular occurance this summer!

It remains to be seen whether the offer meets the £100m asking price and if it doesn't, Ashley may still reject it and take the club off the market.

I honestly can't see how that is in his interests? He surely must realise how despised he has become on Tyneside and the sooner he takes off back to anonymity in Berkshire the better.

Let's just hope this really is the end of a saga which is threatening to destory the club by antipathy.

Given Mr Moat was chairman of Alan Shearer's tesimonial commitee I think we can safely assume the former United captain will be in the manager's chair as soon as the keys to St James's Park are handed over.

Ohh god please let this happen, we have been put through torture until now.
All we want is our club to be salvaged and go back to spending our weekends supporting the black and white that we bleed.

R.I.P Sir Bobby our club may well be on the mend.

Desperately hope this does come to something, and that the story isn't just yet another piece of misinformation in the psychological warfare that Ashley seems intent on continuing to wage on us.

Even if the bid's £20M short, I reckon there'd be 50,000 Mags happy to make up the difference to get rid of the current lot. NUSC - organise it now please, just in case!

It seems like Luke has been duped like the rest of us, as the "Breaking News" banner on his own emploers website says the story is untrue. If the Journo's on this paper are being duped by stories in their own rag, what chance the rest of us?

Don't get too excited..... We've been here before. I won't even blink an eye until it's official.

This story was dead in the water before the ink had dried on the first copy of the Journal. Barry Moat couldn't afford to buy NUFC, let alone pump in the money that it's going to take to get us back where we were even just two years ago. You can view his company accounts online. So, unless he's the face for a consortium made up of his mates, one of whom is Fat Freddy, it's another none starter.

And as was pointed out numerous times on Radio 5 last night, what kind of plonker says "I'll sell for £100m." No buyer in their right mind is going to look at our accounts and playing staff and think "oooh, £100m, what a bargain!"

If Ashley wants to sell, he's going to have to be prepared to accept around £80m, no strings. Alternatively, he could take the club off the market and gamble on getting us promoted in order to make us a more attractive proposition to potential buyers. The season kicks off in two days time, and for the first time since the dark days in the early 90s, I'm not looking forward to it.

I just heard that the external investors in Barry Moat's syndicate are: Uri Geller, Bernard Madoff, Sir Alan Sanford & Santa Claus. Well, it must all be true then.

Like Newcastle, Norwich City were relegated at the end of last season. Now they have a new manager, a new board, a restructure of the playing staff, and 25,000 tickets sold already for their seaon opener against Colchester. Newcastle have still got such a long way to go to reach any point of stability, that talk of an immediate return to the Premiership seems ridiculous.

What was the score at Carrow Road on Saturday? I didn't see that game on BBC's highlights.....
