Carroll And Kadar Could Be Conflict Diamonds
Let's be honest here, Newcastle United aren't playing well, they are not playing attractive football and they do not look like a class act in the Championship, but at least they are winning again and are sitting at the top of the table as a result.
Winning ugly is a popular phrase in football, particularly if you are the manager of a team of limited ability but high on passion and commitment. At the moment, that is precisely what Newcastle resemble under Chris Hughton.
Nevertheless, as the boys among you will know, when you haven't pulled in a while your standards lower and you'll pretty much take home anything you can get your hands on in a nightclub.
Personally, I don't think Newcastle have played well for an entire 90 minutes since the 4-0 win at Ipswich Town at the end of the September. They made that win look easy and even I began to believe promotion could become a formality.
Since then, they have wobbled badly at the top of the table, the rest of the pack has closed the gap on them and, for a while, it looked as though all of the squad's weaknesses would be exposed and a slide down the table would follow.
That it hasn't owes much to the effort and commitment of these players. They were hurt by the criticism which followed the away defeats at Nottingham Forest and Scunthorpe and have complained about it to journalists like me.
I've no problem with that but I, like you, expect a reaction and they have responded with two back-to-back victories.
Neither were achieved by playing good football, neither was secured by out-passing the opposition or battering them into submission with wave after wave of attack. That is disappointing, but we can't be overly critical in these circumstances.
Newcastle remain a club in turmoil. This weekend should see the return of organised protests against Mike Ashley, understandable given his latest horrific blunder in trying to sell the name of St James's Park to the highest bidder, but not exactly helpful to those one the pitch.
In the meantime, while the fractious and divisive atmosphere escalates in the stands, the players must continue to get on with their promotion task, ignore the distractions and continue to grind out victories any and which way they can.
Indeed, having seen far too many go through the motions in recent weeks, the most impressive thing about the win at Sheffield United was the collective determination not to buckle under the home side's pressure.
Newcastle have perhaps been guilty of having more style than substance in the past, but I don't think you can accuse this team of that.
It isn't particularly enjoyable to watch, but for once should we care? Promotion, promotion, promotion. I can't say it enough, that's all that matters this season. That and the hope Ashley will eventually find a buyer and disappear for good.
And there are some positives to cling to. Alan Smith and Kevin Nolan are finally justifying the reputations they arrived on Tyneside with and in Tamas Kadar and Andy Carroll, Newcastle have two exciting young players who could go on to achieve big things.
Kadar was a little shaky on his debut against Doncaster, but he hardly put a foot wrong against a physical Blades outfit. He is good on the ball, strong in the air and quick on the ground. He certainly looks good enough to play regularly at this level if needed.
As for Carroll, his decision making isn't always great and he needs to curb his wilder behaviour off the pitch, but the raw talent is there for him to become a fantastic target man.
He more than held his own against bully boy centre half Chris Morgan on Monday night and was Newcastle's best player.
He is gaining priceless experience this season and if he keeps his listening and learning, Newcastle might have unearthed a precious jewel from their Academy - not something we've been able to say for far too long.

Best player was Jose Enrique by a mile. But yes, the two youngsters had good games!
I'm not Andy Carrolls biggest fan but his personal battle with Morgan yesterday was great to watch. Experienced old lag v New kid on the block and the newbie came out on top. If only CH had the moxy to play two up front then that game would have been sewn up by half time as Sheffield were there for the taking.
I also liked Kadar, after a nervous start and it goes to show how much better we are when we choose specialist players in the right position no matter how young they are. Must do a lot for the rest of the reserves/ academy to know that first team places are genuinely up for grabs.
Carroll Kadar blah blah blah.
In the scheme of things currently, pardon me Luke, but SO F****** WHAT?!
Once again the Journal peddles business as usual BS like this - and the laughable Llambias quotes on the raping of our heritage - while the real story remains untold by Thompson House.
Whether you mean to be or not, you're now complicit in this deception.
We don't want protests in the stands. The FCB p***** himself laughing while counting his money every time we try that. We want empty stands and empty cash registers. The players can look after themselves for a while.
For the truth, try TF (as usual) ...

Ah Mr Restless, now why would I wish to promote something on the True Faith website when they have never cross referenced anything from The Journal on their website due to the fact certain personalities there don't like me. Oh no, you have to write for The Times to be cross referenced because he is a friend of the journalist in question!! Anyways, I'm happy for fans to read this article above, it's an interesting one which I've read myself so I won't remove it. However, you're criticism is over the top. I like to keep a variety of articles on this blog and have talked about the protests, plus reported the latest outpouring from the boardroom in Wednesday morning's Journal. I'm not just going to bang on about boycotts day after day, week after week. As you say, True Faith and others, including the excellent Tyne Talk are doing that perfectly well on their own. I'm extremely interested to see what sort of response there will be against Peterborough on Saturday
And Jan, you're absolutely right, Jose Enrique has been superb recently. I should have mentioned his as well
Our fans need to get a life!
Is it any wonder nobody wanted to touch us with a bargepole? Owners cannot do anything to raise turnover without it upsetting our fans! It's a joke!
I haven't heard any fan, not one single fan make a issue out of the fact that there is a sportsdirect.com sign on the Gallowgate stand.
That's all their proposing to do, they already do it, their just letting everyone know that their going to do it on all four sides.
It will always be St James' park to us and to everyone else.
Our supporters make too much noise, create endless headaches for every regime- ' Sack the manager' 'Bring in this manager' 'You cannot do this', 'You cannot do that'!
I don't like Ashley or his regime but were are making it almost impossible for anyone to buy he club and plought their own money into to make it successful.
Why don't we concentrate on supporting the club and focus all our energy on that rather than demo's and letting people like NUSC, Steve Wraith, True Faith and Mark Jensen whip us all into a frenzy over pointless issues!
Oh and just a point - If Ashley decided not to put the £20m in this week, there's every likelyhood we'd be in adminstration come Christmas. I knwo alot of it is his fault, but if he hated the club as much as everyones says adminstration wouldn't bother him one iota.
He would write it off against his other business assets.
Just a thought.
Luke - I respect your integrity for not deleting my post. It's a shame your self styled 'true Geordie' oppo at your sister paper didn't have a pair of cojones too.
I am at my wits end reading the ill-informed views of myopic idiots like Stuart. I just wish the local press would help galvanise the frustration and anger that I believe 80+% of fans feel at the moment.
Maybe that's not your remit and I am being unfair. But God, must you let Llambias spout forth without at least heavily critiquing what he's saying in the same article? A little bit of editorial alongside the PR BS would be greatly appreciated.
